A premier Cornell sports program. Has maintained that for decades.

Geiger Cup returns to Ithaca with Lightweight Rowing's win at Columbia, but perfect season marred by second boat’s 4.3 second loss.

Columbia has some speed. Will be interesting to see what happens at race with Yale who are currently ranked number 1. Yale heavies have I think 4 current olympians in their 1V, not sure what the lwt team composition is like.

This is a post about the heavyweight crew, but I figured it would fit in well under this thread instead of starting a new one. In any case, this is a moving story about a cox for the heavyweight crew who died of cancer this spring at the age of 21. His Make a Wish dream trip was to be with his teammates in Florida over spring break for their training session down there.

Thank you for sharing, particularly poignant, as I’m on the Board of Naiades Oncology Rowing in Rochester. I’ve shared it with the several masters rowing clubs here. Thanks again.

Didn't see the 3V but 2V and 1V lights both make grand finals later this afternoon. Navy is fast, we'll see if Cornell has anything in reserve. 1V will have a bad lane for finals.

3V finished first in its heat, with better time than Navy in the other heat. BTW, Cornell varsity LW 4+ finished first in GF.

Winds have died down, so if conditions hold, lane placement may be less of a factor.

Four former Cornell rowers will represent the United States at the World Championships in Racice, Czech Republic next week — lightweight rower Soren Koszyk '20 (men’s double), Solveig Imsdahl '13 (lightweight women's pair), Alex Karwoski '11 (men's eight) and Michael Grady '19 (men's pair).

Very interesting. See the very last sentence of the email below. As a donor, I get regular communications from Cornell rowing. I never received any notice about Chris Kerber’s departure. Given the lack of a prior announcement, I assume he was terminated. It certainly can’t be for lack of success, because that’s apparently not one of the things Noel worries about. Has anyone heard anything?

Nase Named Cornell’s Henry E. Bartels ’48 Coach Of Men’s Lightweight Rowing.

ITHACA, N.Y. – Tyler Nase, an Olympic oarsman for the US Rowing team, a decorated Ivy League competitor as an undergraduate, and a rising star in the coaching profession, has been named the Henry E. Bartels ’48 Head Coach of Men’s Lightweight Rowing on an interim basis.

Nase joins the Big Red after most recently serving as assistant lightweight coach at Penn since 2017. He helped the program to its first Ivy League championship in 50 years in 2019 and led them to a third-place finish nationally that same season. The 2021 team took second at IRAs, while the 2022 team topped Princeton for the first time on their Lake Carnegie home course for the first time in 44 years.

Nase has been involved in Ivy League rowing since his collegiate days at Princeton, where he competed on the varsity team all four years with the final three in the varsity eight boat. His freshman eight won bronze to help the Tigers claim EARC’s Jope Cup along the way, with the varsity eight claiming Ivy League and IRA national titles. His boat won the prestigious Head of the Charles and set the course record in 2010 for varsity lightweight eights. As a senior captain, Nase was awarded the 2013 Gordon Sikes medal, the team award for the senior member of the lightweight crew who has shown the best sportsmanship and done the most for rowing over their four years.

After graduating from Princeton, Nase continued his athletic career with the US Rowing team, where he became an Olympian, a medalist at the junior world championships and senior World cups, and an American record holder. He competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics as an oarsman in the men’s lightweight straight four and won bronze at the 2016 World Cup, silver at the 2013 World Cup, and bronze at the 2008 Junior World Championships. Nase still holds the fastest American 2,000-meter erg time amongst lightweights at 6:04.4.

Nase fills the vacancy created by Chris Kerber's departure in mid-November.

I believe Todd sent out a very cursory note a month or so ago suggesting that Chris had moved on. My assumption is also that he was let go but I have zero insight into what happened, though the silence suggests it probably wasn't something good.

The last email that I received from Chris was on November 5, just before the Princeton Chase and not too long before he was apparently terminated. Four national championships in 11 years and a gold in the Head of the Charles a couple of years ago, yet Archer persists. Must have been something pretty awful.

I started rowing at age 68, I’m 80 now. In 2017, I got to stroke a 4+ in the Head of the Charles. A friend and former Cornell rower told coach Kerber, and Chris sent an email wishing me well and included a blurb in the Lightweight Crew newsletter. I greatly appreciated this gesture then, and it’s something that I’ll always remember. Clearly, I’m not alone in my admiration for this coach whom I never met.

Anytime you see an old guy and the word "stroke," you need to stop and re-read carefully. Okay, it definitely is about rowing.

Hang in there!

Thanks! I’m still at it. In masters rowing, there’s a time handicap based on the average age of the rowers in the boat. In the Head of the Genesee this year, my 8+ won by 1.645 seconds. I did my part when I stepped in the boat. Sometimes age has advantages, just not very often.
