will cornell cut teams?

I see some schools already cutting programs with budget issues around the country.

I'm not sure why. If school's out expenditures should be close to zero.

What would you cut? The teams that get little revenue and fans-in-attendance may be the ones with the students have to have been most student-like - the closest to the student-athlete ideal.

An easy cut at most schools is wrestling because there is no women's wrestling team. You can't pull that off at Cornell.

Men's gymnastics was cut long ago, so there's only women's gymnastics to cut, and then you have a Title IX imbalance if women's gymnastics is the counterpoint to mens' wrestling.

If there are budget issues - say a lawsusit forces Cornell to reimburse half of spring tuition because that's the value of remote learning - this is when sports-supporting alumni would step in, perhaps to the detriment of less-essential parts of the university, such as instruction.

Who's going to be hurt: The lesser (academically) D1 schools, also D2 and D3. Since the peak of incoming freshmen circa 2010, numbers have gone down, and schools that can't fill entering classes will be hurt. If you have an acceptance rate over 60%, you're in jeopardy, especially if you're a private school charging $30K-$50K tuititon. If it's over 75%-80%, jeopardy squared. Even a Syracuse (45% accept rate) should be okay because it's better than a lot of other schools.

because football finances a lot of athletic departments and fall football with a live crowd seems increasingly unlikely. And unless the schools furlough their entire coaching and training staffs (which would be catastrophic) the expenses are not near zero. Old Dominion cut wrestling; Cincinnati cut men's soccer.

that said, i hope it doesn't happen. It would be terrible.

Have you ever seen a breakdown on which Cornell sports are endowed/funded primarily by alumni donations? I believe, but could be mistaken, that Lightweight Rowing, and perhaps the entire crew organization is primarily funded through various endowed funds and annual alumni support. This may be true of some other Cornell sports as well, and would hopefully lessen any risk of Cornell cutting anything.

Something tells me Cornell does not rely on football-attendance revenues to keep other sports afloat.

Kill the polo team. Probably costs a fortune to maintain the horses ... and I’m sure someone thinks it’s cruel, so there’s your excuse.

Just looked and saw we had a sailing team? Never knew that. There’s another cut. Boats ain’t cheap

I think both of those are self funded though

Also water polo, because it's an even bigger waste of money teaching the horses to swim.
