If you hadn't noticed, Cornell's men's soccer team is 8-2 and ranked #24 in the country (and #1 in the northeast). Today they moved to 2-0 in the Ivy league with a 4-2 road win over Harvard. Last week they beat Penn 1-0 in OT in Ithaca. So far the only losses were on the road to Syracuse and CSUN. Syracuse is unranked but #9 in RPI* and they just beat #1 Wake Forest 2-0.

Next game is a tough one - Tuesday night at #20 Colgate. (Why are we #1 in the Northeast? I don't know. Separate polls?) Three common opponents so far. We beat Lehigh 3-2; Colgate lost 1-0. We beat Binghamton 2-0, Colgate tied 1-1. We lost to Syracuse 2-0; Colgate tied 1-1. Colgate's best result is a 1-1 tie at #5 Denver but at 5-1-4 they're #12 in RPI.*

The women's team is having a rough year. 1-8-1 and 0-3 in the Ivies. I watched some of today's game and Harvard winning only 2-0 was a surprise (but also a credit to the Cornell goalie who has to stand on her head to keep it close and does.)

Speaking of ESPN+ they don't seem to archive every game and it's infuriating. It's especially infuriating because when the games are at Harvard. the Crimson video team cuts the highlight package like North Korea. In a 4-2 loss, the highlights were the 2 Harvard goals and a bunch of Harvard saves INCLUDING a save that ricocheted off the crossbar and went directly to Charles Touche who headed it in to complete a hat trick. The highlight cut off as he was leaning in to the ball. lol

* small sample size alert; we're #25 in RPI.

Men’s soccer has been a pleasure to watch. Coach Smith is building a nice program. I believe 16 of the 21 players are freshmen or sophomores, so it appears the best is yet to come.

Women’s soccer and field hockey are pretty bad this year.

I just watched the highlight video and Cornell put a nice shot off the crossbar with ~12 minutes left and headed the rebound just over the bar. Brutal.

The loss drops Cornell to 31 in RPI. Still early in the Ivy season to know anything about who will get the autobid.

Cornell over Brown in Providence, 2-1.

After Cornell committed an own goal 20 seconds into the 2nd half ("GK missed pass from Defender" ) the Red score two minutes later, and again four minutes later, then hold on for the win.

Cornell loses 1-0 in OT to Albany, a school with a losing record sitting at the bottom of America East. Oof. That's going to make an at-large bid if we don't win the Ivies a lot harder.

I saw most of the game. Our guy had a PK saved by the Albany goalie early in the game, and that set the tone as we didn't get much going. In the OT we had a miscommunication on a pass that led to an Albany counter, and their guy buried the shot after a nice pass at the top of the box.

Based on the website CU77 linked to above, Cornell's RPI is now 44, which would be right on the projected cut line for at-large teams. You'd think the team would have to win out to claim an at-large -- and if they win out, they win the league.

Still, it's a team with a lot of future promise.

They might barely survive a loss to Princeton or Columbia. But they should probably go ahead and win out.

I doubt Cornell would get an at-large bid. Their strength-of-schedule is #150 and their best win is over #33 Colgate (and no prospect to get a better win). Compare (for example) RPI #46 UC Santa Barbara, with the #60 SOS, a win over #19 UCLA, and a draw against #15 UC Irvine.

So: just win, baby!

The way I (halfheartedly) read the rules, selection, like pairwise, it is purely mathematical. I was only saying that going 2-1 may leave them as the last team in, though like you and mountainred, I doubt it.

Soccer selection is by committee, and is not purely mathematical. Usually selections follow RPI pretty closely, but never exactly. Having a win over a top-20 team seems to be valued for getting one of the last at-large slots.

I regret starting this thread! Cornell falls to Dartmouth in OT 2-1. I also watched the end of the women's game against Dartmouth today and, though Cornell scored before I tuned in, Dartmouth absolutely dominated the part of the game that I saw, tying the game with just under two minutes left and then winning in 2OT. I'm not sure I saw the Dartmouth goalie even touch the ball more than once or twice.

While it is obvious you cursed them, the team deserved some attention on this board. There's just one senior and while there are many contributors, no one is putting up "I'm going to turn pro" numbers (i.e. Dan Haber leading the nation in scoring in 2012).

Well after getting to RPI #14 on Oct 10 with a record of 9-2-0, the team goes 1-4-0, with a final game against Columbia in NYC. I hope they can pull off the win to end on a high note.

We probably killed Columbia's playoff chances today. They needed a win and a Princeton loss to Yale to take the Ivy title. We (55) even have a higher RPI than Columbia (59) now.

Interestingly, because they opened the year with a pair of losses to top 25 teams, 6-5-5 Dartmouth (46) has a higher RPI than 9-4-2 conference champ Princeton (51), pending the rest of today's games.

Dartmouth beat Brown 4-1 and is up to 39 in RPI so I wouldn't be surprised if they got a bid. I understated their schedule: they opened the season with three losses and two draws, but all three losses were to teams in the top 25 RPI (@ #2 Indiana, @* #5 Notre Dame and @ #24 UConn) and they tied #25 UNH. Four of the first five games against top 25 teams. Once the schedule eased up, they went 7-3-2.

Not that it matters, but Cornell finishes with a stronger RPI than Columbia or Princeton.

Princeton opens up on the road at Michigan, with the winner traveling to #7 Notre Dame. No Ivy at-large bids, which I realized as soon as I heard that it was a 48 team field with 24 AQs.

From a 5 minute review of the bracket and listed RPIs, it appears 30 was the magic number to be "safely in" since the team with the # 31 RPI (Creighton) is out. UNCW (#41) looks like the "last team in" as every other higher RPI was an AQ.

Now, can we remember these numbers into next fall? And, can the team make remembering relevant?
