I know you were watching what sounds like the worst hockey game in history, from the final score to the officiating to the injuries. But while that was going on ...

Yianni Diakomihalis. two-time NCAA champion.

The rest of the day didn't go so well. Vito lost in the 3rd place match and finished in 4th. Honis lost in the 7th place match and finished in 8th. Dean lost in the championship match. Great results in the abstract, but not so great the day of.

Yianni, though.

I'll write more when I get up but it's 1 AM.

I watched the Yianni and Dean matches on replay, both very close, won on final takedowns, Yianni's in OT, and with a controversial call going Yianni's way at the end of regulation (I don't know enough about the rules to have an opinion on it). For Dean I'm guessing it was tough to be fully psyched after beating the previously undefeated #1 seed in the semis.

7th overall with 4 All Americans is a very good year. Congrats to the team and coaches!

I was curious. Did Dean have caution warnings that he had to be that aggressive at the end ?

Dean was down one by virtue of Foster's having over 1 minute of riding time. So Dean needed a takedown, or he needed to force two stalling calls on Foster, to get the match to OT.

Dean was effectively *tied* because of the riding time and needed a takedown to avoid OT.

Koll said during a first period interview that the strategy was to wear Foster down and beat him in the third period, like they did earlier in the year. That went out the window when Foster rode Dean for most of the second period. Instead of getting an early escape and dishing two minutes of abuse, Dean had to spend the two minutes fighting off of bottom. If he'd gotten a reversal instead of an escape late in the second - he was so close - he'd have had a two point lead AND wiped out RT and could have spent the third period mostly defending a one point lead after Foster escaped.

Instead, when Foster stood up immediately in the third, the match was basically tied and it was more or less sudden death once the clock got down under a minute. Because he wasn't exhausted, Foster's quickness - what they were hoping to beat out of him - won the match at the end. I don't think anyone expected Foster to be able to ride Dean like that. Props to him. It was a great match.

My feelings on Yianni's match are as follows:

The US Open, the primary World Team Trials qualifier, starts today, and Cornell has a number of entrants. Mostly in Senior Men's Freestyle, but also a couple in Senior Greco. All weights in kg. This is what I've been able to put together from my checking registrations and the work of some others on the wrestlingreport.com Cornell subforum. Seed in parens if available.

Junior Greco:
60: (5) Phillip Moomey '23
77: (U) Sammy Cokeley '23 (or '24)
82: (4) Jonathan Loew '23
87: (2) Jonathon Fagen '23 (or '24)

Senior Greco:
82: (9) Andrew Berreyesa '22 (already qualified for WTT - Defending US Junior WT member; he took silver at Worlds)
82: (3) Jon Jay Chavez '19 (already qualified at 72 - Defending US Senior WT member - but I can't see him ever getting back to that weight. He was injured before Worlds and didn't compete.)

Junior Freestyle:
61: Phillip Moomey '23
66: Josh Saunders '24 (or '25)
74: Andrew Merola '23
74: Sammy Cokeley '23
74: Julian Ramirez '23 (or '24)
86: Jonathan Loew '23
92: Jacob Cardenas '23 (or '24)
125: Brendan Furman '22
125: Lewis Fernandes '23 (or '24)

Senior Freestyle:
57: (5) Frank Perelli '12
57: (7) Vito Arujau '22 (already qualified at 61 for WTT being the US Junior WT member; he was injured before Worlds and didn't compete.)
65: (5) Yianni Diakomihalis '21 (already qualified for WTT - NCAA champion)
86: (8) Max Dean '21
97: (3) Ben Honis '19

61: Nahson Garrett '16 is qualified for the WTT as defending WT member but is not competing at the US Open. He was injured after Final X last year; his replacement was a world medalist.
79: Kyle Dake '13 skips past WTT all the way to Final X as defending World Champion. Final X is a faceoff between a defending world medalist and the winner of the WTT for a spot on the team.

The full qualification process is explained in a handy chart here. The short version is that the US Open champ gets a bye to the WTT finals; the winner of WTT faces any defending world medalists who skip straight to Final X.

Beat the Streets Grapple at the Garden is a very cool wrestling exhibition - basically a series of friendlies - and recently crowned US Open champ Yianni went up against Bajrang Punia, the #1 wrestler in the world in his weight class. And won.

Enjoy the video in it's brief life before this gets taken down and put back behind a paywall. [www.youtube.com]

Thanks for alerting us about the video. Very impressive performance. But what was with Punia’s coach snapping the towel at his guy’s face between periods? That was odd.

Aggressive is right. Seems to me like he came close to taking out his guy’s eye dribble

Vito Arujau blew through the field at 57kg at the US Junior World Team Trials to make the National team. This is the second year in a row Arujau won a national team qualifying tournament. In 2018 he won the U23 Trials at 61kg but withdrew before the world championship. I don't know if he is going to try to qualify for U23 again as well.

Chris Foca (82kg) and Joshua Saunders (65kg) - two recruits who will join the team in the Fall - lost early in the Junior WTT.

Ben Honis (97kg) lost in the first round of Senior freestlye WTT.

Frank Perrelli (57kg) lost in the second round of Senior freestyle WTT.

Anthony Berreyesa (82kg) lost in the second round of Senior Greco WTT.

Yianni Diakomihalis (61kg) and Kyle Dake (79kg) both got to skip the WTT and are already qualified for Final X, the last stage of US Senior World Team qualification.

Qualification for the Worlds for the U23 and Cadet (U17) are this weekend and Cornell has a lot of entrants. As far as I know, though, all are in U23.

First, in Greco, Andrew Berreyesa will represent Team USA for the second straight year. After qualifying last year for the Junior World team and taking Silver at 82kg, he qualified for the U23 team at 82kg this year, winning the tournament as the 4 seed. He beat the 1 seed in the semifinals and then a 2x NCAA freestyle All-American in the finals. Wild that he wrestles for Cornell at 165.

We had two more wrestlers compete in Greco - Joshua Saunders and Luis Hernandez both wrestled at 63kg. Saunders finished in 4th, Hernandez in 7th.

In the Freestyle competition, since I'm tracking this at a Cornell wrestling forum, here's what I've got:

Championship bracket:
61: Chas Tucker - Bye; WTS 11-0; W 7-0; W 8-4 (In QF)
65: Joshua Saunders - Bye; WTS 12-2; WTS 10-0; WTS 16-5 (In QF) (yes, he competed in Greco on Friday then in Freestyle over the weekend)
86: Max Dean - Bye; W 8-0; WTS 13-2; W 8-5 (In QF)
97: Ben Honis - Bye; WTS 10-0 (In QF) (not many entrants at 97)

Consolation bracket:
74: Adam Santoro - WTS 10-0, WTS 10-0, WTS 10-0, LTS 0-10 Consi: WTS 4-4 (In C8)
86: Jonathan Loew - Bye, WTS 13-3, WTS 12-0, LTS 4-15 Consi: WTS 10-0 (In C8)

Eliminated:
65: Mike Venosa - W 10-2; LTS 0-11 Consi: W 4-2; L 14-14
65: Mike Russo - Bye; L 10-16 Consi: WTS 16-6; WTS 10-0; L 9-10
65: Ryan Moore - WTS 12-2; W 10-4; LTS 0-10 Consi: WTS 13-2; L 9-20
70: Mike Russo - Bye; LTS 0-10 Consi: WTS 10-0; LTS 0-11
70: Anthony Palmiotto - LTS 0-11 Consi: 0-10
74: Micah Hoffman - LTS 2-12 Consi: LTS 1-11
125: Brendan Furman WTS 10-0; WTS 12-1; LBF Consi: L 12-19

More U23 National results

Championship Bracket
61: Tucker - W 6-3; W 8-4 (to Finals)
65: Saunders WInj; LTS 0-12 (to Consi Semi)
86: Dean - WTS 13-3; W 10-9
97: Honis - WTS 10-0; LTS 3-14 (to Consi Semi)

Consolation Bracket
65: Saunders - WTS 10-0 (to 3d place match)
74: Santoro - W 12-3; LBF (Out)
84: Loew - WTS 11-0; W 7-2; LTS 1-12 (to 7th place match)
97: Honis - Injury Default (to 5th place match)

Medal Round
65: Saunders - WTS 10-0 3rd Place
84: Loew - L 6-8 8th Place
97: Honis - Injury Default 6th Place

BEST OF 3 FINALS
65: Tucker - W 4-0; WTS 10-0 TUCKER IS THE U23 NATIONAL CHAMP!
86: Dean - WTS 10-0; WTS 14-2 DEAN IS THE U23 NAtiONAL CHAMP!

Dean is almost certainly going to go to the world championships in Budapest in October, because there is nobody qualified for Final X at the senior level who is still eligible for U23 at his weight class, so there's not likely to be a post-Final X challenge for his spot on the team. Tucker, on the other hand, said that he isn't going to go because his computer science courseload is too challenging to do both! Tucker's backup, Pitt's Micki Phillippi, has to hope that Oklahoma State's Daton Fix wins Final X or doesn't want to challenge him for the spot if he loses. By the same token, if Yianni loses at Final X, he can challenge Missouri's Jayden Eierman for the U23 spot.

I also found out that a Cornell recruit, Ethan Hatcher, wrestled in the Cadet championship (high school, basically) at 110kg. He finished in third place, with all four of his wins coming by Technical Superiority and his only loss to the champion.

At Final X, Yianni Diakomihalis faced 3x National Champion Zain Retherford from Penn State in Best of 3 rematch of the US Open final. In the first match, Retherford did a great job of preventing Yianni from scoring on the counterattack or in scrambles and won 10-4. The second match, well...

Match 2 was a wild match - Retherford shot off of the opening whistle and when the smoke cleared, he was ahead 4-4 on tiebreaker criteria. Yianni too the lead back at 6-4. Then it got nuts. There was a scramble with just under a minute left that was admittedly really difficult to score. The ref on the mat gave each wrestler 2 and there was no more scoring the rest of the match even though there were multiple ALMOSTS, and the match ended with Yianni up 8-6. Retherford's corner challenged the scoring and the matside judges ultimately ruled that only Retherford should have received 2 and awarded him the match 6-6 (last to score). This is, to say the least controversial.

First, under any normal system, if they are going to take away points, they should return the match to that point. Yianni would have wrestled a different - more urgent - match had he known he were losing. Additionally, the wrestling rules say that you have to challenge within 5 seconds of points being awarded and Retherford's corner didn't challenge until the conclusion of the match - nearly a minute after the scoring decision. The rationale given was that there was a minute of uninterrupted wrestling after the scoring decision, so it is one unitary "move," so they were allowed to go all the way back. Yianni and his people have said that they are going to file a protest through the UsOC process, which - according to the head of USA Wrestling - is the only avenue of appeal.

Stay tuned.

Yianni's appeal of the second match at Final X is still pending but he's wrestling this weekend in Istanbul at the Yasar Dogu tournament - and so is Zain Retherford. The brackets are not out yet but we could see a rematch before we see the results of Yianni's protest.

Kyle Dake postponed his match in Final X because of an injury he sustained at the Friedman Center when Cornell heavyweights Brendan Furman and Jeramy Sweany were scrapping to close to where Dake and Dean were working out and crashed into the back of Dake's leg, requiring knee surgery. His rescheduled date against Alex Dieringer is August 17. As a warmup he won the Grand Prix of Spain but tbh didn't look close to his best against B level competition.

Yianni's appeal of the second match at Final X is still pending but he's wrestling this weekend in Istanbul at the Yasar Dogu tournament - and so is Zain Retherford. The brackets are not out yet but we could see a rematch before we see the results of Yianni's protest.
Yianni and Zain will wrestle in the first round. On Flo with a subscription at 4am Eastern.

Yianni advances to the finals.

Wins comfortably over Retherford in the first round - 9-5. Had a 9-3 lead and gave up a garbage time takedown with time running out, imo mostly to run out the clock. In the QF he steamrolled an Azeri wrestler 13-2 for a tech fall. In the semis, he went down 9-0 in the first round and then in the second round his opponent got completely gassed and Yianni came back to take the lead on criteria 9-9, but the score didn't matter because the last point was awarded simultaneously to the third caution on his opponent, disqualifying him. Great run.

He has a wrestler from Bahrain Brunei in the final round, though given how the gulf small but insanely wealthy states build their athletic programs I have no idea if he's actually from Bahrain Brunei.

And I also particularly appreciate your frequent reminders of upcoming events, especially on the international scene since I often am not following the calendar closely enough. While I didn't watch Yanni's matches live [esp at 4 am EDT], I caught them in the Flowrestling archives.

Thanks, CU77 and dag14.

If you want to tool through the archives some more, dag, there are 4 Cornell recruits wrestling in the Junior Freestyle nationals.

138: Josh Saunders is in the semis. He has won all of his matches by Technical Superiority: 11-1, 10-0, 10-0, 13-0, 10-0
195: Ethan Hatcher is in the semis. He has won all of his matches by Technical Superiority: BYE, 10-0, 10-0. 10-0, 12-2

170: Mason Reiniche is alive in the consolation bracket. He won his first 3 matches: WBF, 7-1. 3-2 before losing 10-3 in R16. In the consolation bracket he has won 13-2, 11-5 to survive.
182: Chris Foca is alive in the consolation bracket. He won his first 4 matches WBF, WBF, WBF, 15-3 before losing a wild match 14-14 on criteria to the #1 ranked wrestler still in high school. Foca graduated in 2019 but he may take a greyshirt and postpone enrolling at Cornell for a year.

Reiniche and Foca are in the blood round: a win puts them in the top 8. Saunders and Hatcher can finish no worse than 6th.

SF:
138: Saunders WTS 12-2 on to the finals against (I think) the 2 seed. 1 vs 2 final.
195: Hatcher L 6-8 down to Consy Semi.

Consy:
170: Reiniche LTS 5-15 out in the blood round (the two wrestlers who beat him are in the 3rd and 7th place matches tomorrow)
182: Foca WTS 10-0, L 7-10 will wrestle for 7th (the two wrestlers who beat him are in the final and 3rd place matches tomorrow)
195: Hatcher WTS 11-0 will wrestle for 3rd (only loss was in the SF, so, to a finalist)

Saunders is in the final and everyone else's "worst" loss was to a medalist.

Saunders wins the 138 final 5-3.
Foca wins the 182 7th place match by tech 12-2 in 1:55.
Hatcher wins the 195 3rd place match by tech 10-0 in 0:38.

Congrats to all the future Big Red wrestlers.

Foca wins the 182 7th place match by tech 12-2 in 1:55.
After the Freestyle competition, Foca wrestled in the Greco-Roman tournament and took the title at 182. 6 straight wins including 3 tech falls, the last of which was in the finals.

This weekend Yianni (65kg Freestyle) and Berreyesa (77kg Greco) went to Warsaw for the Poland Open.

Yianni won his first two matches 10-0, 11-0 to advance to the semifinal, an anticipated rematch of Yianni's wild comeback win from Yasar Dogu, but Musukaev defaulted out. He will face a Ukranian in the final tomorrow (the session starts at 8am Eastern).

Berreyesa won his first round match 4-1 then lost the QF 2-1 to a wrestler who injured his shoulder early in the match. His opponent then defaulted out of his semifinal, eliminating Berreyesa from the repechage.

Turns out that it started at 7. It is the first match on the mat 2 window here: [www.zapasy.org.pl]

Spoiler text sort of: Yianni wins 9-8. Unclear why he was given his 9th point. Didn't seem like an exposure to me.

Coach Koll heavily implied that Yianni is going to take an Olympic redshirt to qualify for 2020 and implied less strongly that Arujau, Berreyesa and Dean will as well. We have a couple of great recruiting classes coming in and Darmstadt coming back (at 184!) but this is going to be rough in 19-20 while setting the team up for an insane roster for 20-21 and 21-22.

Still waiting on the results of the Yianni arbitration. While we wait, Vito Arujau is competing at the Junior nationals in Estonia at 57kg.

Vito had a tough draw but he is in the finals, winning his first three matches 4-3, 10-8 and then 8-1. In the first round he beat a three-time Cadet (U17) world medalist from Georgia (Stalin, not Gingrich please don't make the obvious joke here as I already have); in the QF he beat the Asian silver medalist. In the semifinals, he beat the defending Junior world champ from Russia. He'll face Japan's representative in the finals. Amazing.

Well I'll be damned. Yianni won the arbitration.

They didn't "reverse" the referee's decision to change the scoring in match 2, which would have been ideal but was generally considered incredibly unlikely, but they did invalidate the match 2 loss. Time and place TBD, but Yianni Diakomihalis will be wrestling Zain Retherford again, needing to win 2 out of 2 for a spot on the US team for Worlds.

While time and place are TBD it is going to have to be soon: Worlds begin on September 14 in Kazakhstan.

Kyle Dake has made his second straight world team. Using impenetrable defense and tactical scoring (and then a lot clock grinding) Dake beat Dieringer in two straight, 3-2 and 4-2, to win Final X and earn his spot on the US team. Congrats to Kyle.

I'll put down this axe I've been grinding to comment on the details of this project:

The additional space would be used for locker rooms, a practice gym, fitness space, film room and other wrestling-related functions. To make room for this facility, about half of the existing on-site parking lot would be eliminated, while the remaining portion would be reconfigured, along with new stormwater facilities. Showers and training rooms in the existing building will also be renovated. The team roster and arena will not be expanded

One of the most unbelievable things to me when this building was constructed was that when a major opponent like Ohio State would visit, matches were moved to Newman Arena, the former wrestling facility, because the capacity of this groundbreaking monument to wrestling (ok, ok, axe is back down) could not accommodate the expected crowd. Back then, I thought that was amazingly short-sighted, and unfair to other varsity programs who utilize the Field House. NOW, with a major renovation of a (checks notes) 17 year-old building, this shortcoming isn't being addressed?? I mean, the turn-of-the-century showers obviously need to be brought back up to modern standards, but if you aren't going to allow the arena for which this building was built to hold to be upgraded so they won't have to go to an inferior competition space...I'm just at a loss at the purpose of pouring more donor money in.

Has anybody checked how the swimming facilities are holding up?

My guess is that adding seating to the wrestling arena is probably a lot more complicated than tacking on a shed. And the problem with Newman as a wrestling venue was the lack of intimacy. Building capacity to deal with a rare event like a visit from Ohio State doesn't seem like that high a priority when there is a less-perfect venue for that rare event right next door.

As for the donor money pouring in (and suffice it to say that though there are a lot of donors the 'donor' in "donor money" is still basically a singular here) I'd say it's probably that this 81 year old billionaire wants to win a national championship before he kicks it and he's got to spend against the Penn State juggernaut.

Agree, and it would not be a good use of funds.

Put the money to use where it would do the most good. Adding seats for a once or twice a year event is probably not that.

Considering how well the sport is doing, I'm not going to challenge their decisions.

I thank you for your thoughtful reply.

I wonder. Could a large indoor facility serving as a practice, or even game, venue for football, men & women's lacrosse & soccer be designed to serve as a venue for such wrestling events?

Alternatively, I remember reading about the home advantage Providence College had during last spring's men's hockey regionals because the players could recuperate between games using such things as zero-gravity recliners and a CryoTherapy Chamber in state-of-the-art facilities like the Ruane Friar Development Center and Innovation Lab. Wouldn't wrestling benefit from such facilities that would also benefit other teams?

Priorities! Note the additional information on other Cornell plans beyond adding 5,500 feet to the wrestling center:
Ithaca Voice
Meanwhile, a short distance to the north, Cornell is planning a much larger project, one that will host a variety of academic and research units. The yet-to-be-named building will house Cornell’s Centers for Cancer Biology and Immunology, Department of Computation Biology, Masters of Public Health Program and the Atkinson Center.
