Up 8-3 at the half, the women's lacrosse team held on to beat Penn 11-10 to get the AQ. They played hard the entire game but benefitted tremendously from the 10-2 advantage in faceoff draws in the first half.

The Big Red are rewarded for the two wins with the number eight seed; they'll host the first two rounds this Friday and Sunday. Canisius in the first round, and if they get through, a possible third meeting with Princeton (who faces UMass). Looking further out, another possible rematch with top-seeded Maryland in the quarterfinal.

Cornell is ranked 8 of 26 teams in the tournament. Penn is #7. Teams ranked 1 (Maryland) to 6 (Notre Dame) get first-round byes. #4 Syracuse plays at BC (faces winner of BC-Stony Brook) because there wasn't hotel space in Syracuse on graduation weekend. There apparently were rooms however for #8 Syracuse men to host Albany men Sunday, same day as the women play.

The visual brackets (Lacrosse Magazine, NCAA) are almost impossible to read except on a big screen.

A brief check showed it didn't say whether free or fee. The cost to set up a paywall will probably cost more than the revenue brought in.

... and on the strength of winning the Ivy title, Cornell climbs to #10 from #16 in the media poll [www.insidelacrosse.com]

Penn is 11 was 10
Princeton is 14 was 11

Maryland remains #1, unbeaten, and with all the first-place votes. Surely we'll see a number of stories dedicated to the odds of Maryland men and women both winning out.

Why does women's lax have a 26 team tourney? Is lax now seen as a "cheap to field and balance out football for TIX" sport?

The field is larger because there are many more women's D1 programs -- schools such as Florida, Stanford, USC, Cal, BC, and Louisville that do not have men's teams are all tournament teams on the women's side.

Well yes, I assumed that there were many more teams (111 per AlD). The question is why are there so many more women's lax programs than men? I would not have expected such a difference.

Might be a way to have equal / equivalent male and female athetics participants especially at schools with football. ~67 men's D1 lax teams.

Now that BU has a men's D1 lacrosse team, it's even more surprising that BC doesn't as well.

Women tied with Canisius at half. Playing well but not getting all the breaks we got last weekend.

Cornell holds on 15-11 win. Canisius kept up the pressure to the end.

Memo to Cornell. The shimmering "GOAL" and "REPLAY" graphics were originally conceived for use with Betamax tape. A bit harsh on the eyes in 2016.

And, the graphic uses up way too much time!

Congrats to the team on a nice win!

UMass won the opener over Princeton, 13-12 in OT. Minutewomen (great name!) went up 12-11 with 14.6 sec to play. Princeton won the draw and scored the tying goal with 0.8 sec to play.

Glad UMass got the win, did not want to see Princeton again on Sunday.

UMass wins it, 7-6. Cornell fell behind 4-0 and could not come all the way back.

Congrats to the Red women's lax team on a great season!
