"Chris Bates, whose calmness and strength serve as the bedrock of the Princeton men's lacrosse program ..." (says the Princeton media guide) was placed on administrative leave after losing his cool at the start of Q3 in Saturday's Brown game: A Brown player collided with a Princeton player at the start of Q3, the ref threw a flag (against Princeton), Bates walked onto the field apparently to talk to the ref, the Brown player, John Yozzo-Scaperrotta, headed to the substitution box, Bates extended his right shoulder and made contact (glancing blow) with the Bruin.

There was contact and it was unsportsmanlike, but this was not Ohio State's Woody Hayes going ballistic and punching Clemson's Charlie Bauman in 1978.

Princeton statement
Chris Bates, the head men’s lacrosse coach at Princeton University, has been placed on administrative leave pending a review of an incident in this past Saturday’s game against Brown. The University is taking this matter seriously and will be conducting a prompt and thorough review. Offensive coordinator Matt Madalon will lead the team during this process.

Not sure how "placed on administrative leave" differs from "suspended 2 games" like Rick Bennett was when he clocked an RPI player:

this seems even more premeditated, but less violent.

Princeton dismissed a coach who a) stuck his shoulder into a Brown player running off the field and b) by the way was en route to a potentially one-Ivy win season.

Note how Princeton says "Chris Bates is no longer employed by Princeton University" rather than dismissed, canned, let go, or fired. Reminds me of when a Compaq PR person called to explain a laptop recall. "In some instances, the battery may vent with a loud report," he said, reading from the statement.

Especially b. Imagine if Tierney at the height of the Princeton run did this. Completely fine, in fact, the Brown punk was high and deserved it.

Very convenient time and excuse.

Termination for cause is always cheaper than termination for a losing record.

Via USILA. Interesting focus. Guessing this written by a committee. "Effectively operate a Division I varsity Men's Lacrosse program" is third from the bottom. Or is this what every coach's job description is now like?

Head Coach Men's Lacrosse - Princeton University

The mission of Princeton University Department of Athletics is to strive for excellence in academics and athletics, while embracing equity in opportunity, good sportsmanship, and ethical conduct. In keeping with this mission, the role of the Head Coach of Men's Lacrosse is to provide a quality varsity program which will challenge and develop the physical, mental and personal abilities of student-athletes of a Division I program.

Reporting to the Director of Athletics, the responsibilities of the Head Coach of Men's Lacrosse at Princeton University include, but are not limited to the following:

- Coach Men's Lacrosse in a substantive manner that is consistent with the educational mission of the University.

- Engage in ethical and values-based coaching in order to develop the character and the skill of the University's student-athletes.

- Possess a thorough knowledge of the game, a sophisticated understanding of coaching strategies, and a demonstrated ability to enhance player development.

- Recruiting skills: ability to identify and successfully recruit student athletes within the framework of the University guidelines and policies.

- Work effectively with administrators, the support staff, and other coaches and programs within the Department of Athletics.

- Communicate effectively with various institutional constituencies (e.g., faculty, administration, students, parents, staff, alumni and friends) in order to strengthen programmatic integration with the University.

- Effectively operate a Division I varsity Men's Lacrosse program.

- Continue the development and oversight of the Friends Group.

- Adhere to Ivy League, ECAC and NCAA rules and regulations.

"Coach Men's Lacrosse in a substantive manner..." What does that mean?
