Well, let's hope past is prologue, and there will be three more first-team All-Ivy selections in his future. Only this time it will really be The Ivy League rather than the Ivy Preparatory School League. Then the statement about being three-time first-team All-Ivy will be true in both contexts, so the context will be moot.

No more last-minute relocation to the Carrier Dome or that indoor field house in Binghamton. This Cornell-Hobart game moves to West Palm Beach, Feb. 27. One more reason to think Cornell will be getting (needs to be getting) an indoor practice / play facility. Harvard, Penn have them, Princeton is getting. Seasonal fabric dome goes up over the football field after the last game, comes down sometime in March. Big schools with a strong football tradition <insert comment here> have permanent facilities. Cornell is picked 15th in the pre-season poll and face-off specialist Domenic Massimilian is Cornell's lone pre-season All-America selection, to the third team. As Cornell notes in its release, it's only the second time since before 2003 that Cornell started the season outside the top ten. [www.cornellbigred.com]

Former Top Recruit, Hockey Star Chad Otterman Joins Cornell


After spending the season as a member of the Big Red hockey team, former Under Armour All-American and top 10 IL recruit Chad Otterman has joined the men’s lacrosse team at Cornell. He spent 2014-15 playing hockey with the South Shore Kings and Philadelphia Wings of the USPHL, and he joins Matt Kerwick’s squad as a freshman eligibility-wise and began practicing with the team Monday.

At 6-3, 195 lbs., the Delbarton (N.J.) defenseman was rated No. 7 as a rising junior and No. 9 as a rising senior before making the decision to focus on hockey. He registered an assist in the Under Armour game and is remembered for an impressive performance covering Shack Stanwick at the NSCLA Champions Cup while both were on the recruiting circuit.

Otterman’s arrival is an unexpected boon for a Big Red squad ranked No. 15 in the preseason Cascade/Maverik Media Poll and 2016 Face-Off Yearbook. Ty Xanders called Otterman's joining the squad "massive news."

Season begins!

Cornell hosts Penn State in the earliest Schoellkopf opener (Feb. 20) but with temps near 50. Lots of new faces starting for Cornell. Brennan Donville starts in goal. FOGO Domenic Massimilian takes the opening faceoff as expected and not as expected chugs upfield and scores 6 seconds into the game. Cornell plays its first midfield for almost for the first 10 minutes of the quarter. 2-2 after the first quarter. Cornell 3-2 at the half. Donville is a stud in goal.

Second half Penn State goes on a 5-0 run, Cornell goes on a 4-goal run, tied at 7, Penn State gets one more late, up 8-7. Cornell has the ball with half a minute to play and an attacker steps in the crease. Cornell gets the ball back but only enough time to get off a weak shot. 8-7 final, Penn State.

Ends up as a 7-8 loss. Team looked way better than I expected. Danville very solid in goal. But geez, they need some shooting drills! So many shots off cage.

TicketMaster mailing today wants us not be to shut out of final four tickets at Lincoln Financial Field. Capacity: 69,176. Only three times in the past decade has FF attendance (Saturday) topped 45,000 and it has been trending downward since 2007. Last three years it averaged 30,000. LaxPower chart attached shows total attendance of Saturday, Sunday (DII DIII finals), and Monday. All good points. Regardless, the last five years, all-games attendance was lower than in the previous year. Since 2007, the only year where it didn't drop was 2009-2010, a slight tick up from the second of two years in Foxborough followed by a move to Baltimore. I believe the lax sites have some analysis and commentary suggesting the NCAA was getting too greedy on ticket prices. The 2008-to-2009 big drop was the year after the economy tanked.

MLAX does not deserve any type of title hopes after yesterday's embarrassing loss. The program has sunk to the bottom and quickly!

Cornell after the 22-5 loss to Brown falls to also-receving-votes in the USILA coaches poll, only. We're keeping company with Saint Joseph's, Bucknell, Penn, Bryant, High Point, Richmond, Virginia, and Fairfield. At this point the polls just indicate how far from the top voters believe the Big Red has fallen as the season winds down. It's small consolation that Harvard (7-6) is no longer on any poll, although they're in the Ivy tournament and we're not.

USILA coaches poll has the top 5 as 1 Notre Dame (moving up despite losing), 2 Denver, 3 Brown, 4 Yale (was #1), 5 Maryland. Albany is 6, Syracuse 8, Penn is HM.

Lacrosse Magazine has Brown #1 followed by Denver, Notre Dame, Maryland, Albany. Yale is 7, Syracuse 9, Penn also-mention.

Inside Lacrosse media poll has it Denver, Brown, Maryland, Notre Dame, Albany. Yale is 6, Syracuse 7, Penn is HM.

Harvard will likely finish 3-3 after playing Yale Saturday and unbeaten (Ivy play) Brown plays winless Dartmouth. So the 1-4, 2-3 Ivy tournament matchups should be:

Brown vs. Harvard (RS Brown won 11-8)
Yale vs. Penn (RS Penn took Yale to OT before losing)

If we had flipped the outcome of the Harvard RS game, we'd be in as the four-seed and our reward would be a second matchup with Brown in three weeks.

Hey, the Cornell-Princeton game Saturday should be close.

Penn is also in the ILT. For a while it looked as if the Ivies would have 3 teams in the NC$$ tourney. Now that's a real stretch. Unless Penn or Sucks win the AQ, Brown & Yale are the Ivies' only hopes.

Well, the Women's team at 11-3 (5-1) will go on to the league tournament. Currently ranked #18, they're in a 3-way-tie for 1st in the Ivies with Penn and Princeton. They play #14 Penn (who has an identical record) on Saturday and the game will be on ESPN3.

Season ends with a 6-7 loss at Princeton. Women also lose to Penn, 6-10.

Usual woes: turnovers (so bad in the first half that ESPNU ran a "lowlight" on them at halftime, but to be fair not nearly as bad in the 2nd half), anemic predictable offense. Donville with another strong performance in goal (10 saves), but Princeton's backup senior goalie O'Connor stole the show with 11 saves after subbing in the second half (but was aided by poor Cornell shot selection).

IMO, next year will be the crucial test of this coaching staff. With this year's freshman plus new recruits, results should be significantly better. If the vociferous critics are right, that won't happen. We'll see.

Syracuse-Duke ACC title game in Kennesaw, Ga. (metro Atlanta), had to be moved to a second field on account of heavy rain. Syracuse led 9-8 with all but the last 7-1/2 minutes played when the field was drenched. After the restart 3 hours later, Syracuse outscored Duke 5-0 for a 14-8 win and the ACC championship.

Hill [Academy] is used to the heckling [by USA chauvinists]. “We face the misconception that all our players are older and that is not the case,” [coach] Brodie Merrill says. “You are not allowed to repeat in the Ontario system and NCAA rules are strict when it comes to age. Some, not all, of our players choose to take an extra year of high school. You see repeating, or a PG year in the U.S. much more frequently I find.”

Jeff Teat is one of those post-graduates. His age is not the issue—he turned 19 this past weekend. It’s that no one can stop him. The Cornell-bound, left-handed attackman from Brampton, Ontario, is Hill’s quarterback. A co-captain, Teat is the only player on the team in the top 50 of Inside Lacrosse and Recruiting Rundown’s 2016 commit rankings (29th and 30th respectively). He has a cerebral approach and fluid grace on the field. Some of his passes seem telepathic. Two or three defenders are usually required to dislodge the ball from his crosse. Sometimes that isn’t enough. He scored eight goals against the USA U-19 team, that Lacrosse Magazine noted, “defy brief description.” He added three assists.

On his second goal this afternoon, he catches a pass on the crease, absorbs two checks, fakes out the goalie then buries the shot. He tallies a hat-trick in the first quarter.

“Some would say he is playing like the best [high school] player in North America right now,” Casey Vock, an editor at the recruiting website 3d Rising, says. “Everyone believes he can elevate Cornell to where they would be a championship contender today if they had him.”

That and any other blue-chip decommits, and the sparse recruiting classes graduating in 2016 and 2017 that arrived on campus in the fall of 2012 and 2013, are why Cornell started four freshmen on offense this year. The 2012 recruits numbered three on the offensive side: Edmonds, Doyle,, and Henry West. West transferred to Maryland after his freshman year (brother Andrew disappeared from sight, too), where he has started at midfield the past two years for a final four team and this year's #1 NCAA seed. Only Edmonds has seen regular playing time at Cornell.

The 2013 arrivees, also only three on the offensive side were Massimilian, Mahler, and Andrew Keith. Mass is strictly a FOGO, and Mahler has seen little playing time other than backing up Mass at FOGO. Only Keith has seen significant playing time on offense.

If not Cornell's, it may be Ithaca College's year. IC is 18-1, #1 in the media poll, and seeded second in the North bracket 32-team Division III NCAA tournament, behind RIT, which it beat head to head in April. Why 32 teams? There are about 190 DIII teams (3X that of D1) and 23 automatic qualifiers; the rest are 3 independents or conferences with no AQs (called Pool B) and 6 slots for good teams that didn't win their tournaments (Pool C). Salisbury is top seed in the South. Cortland is also in the tournament.

Also in the tournament are DI hockey teams St. Lawrence, RPI, and Colorado College.

Cornell head lacrosse coach Richie Moran being inducted into the IMLCA (International Men's Lacrosse Hall of Fame) during Final Four weekend in Philadelphia. a) Great. b) Shouldn't this have happened in, say, 1996 or 2006 not 2016? Richie won three of the first NCAA eight championships, all before he was 40, came close twice in the 1980s, might have won another pre-1971 if there was an NCAA tournament then. I think too many national championships were won by Baltimore-area teams during the years Baltimore voted in the national champion for Richie to have an easy time of it. The way his teams regularly outclassed Baltimore teams once they actually had to play to win the NC cast a long shadow over all those voting-years championships, lessening their value considerably.

Two NCAA play-in games Wednesday. Towson built up a 17-2 lead on up-and-down neighbor Hobart and won 18-5. (Up-and-down: Two weeks apart Hobart lost to Bryant 15-2 then won 7-6.) Also Quinnipiac 14, Hartford 9, and the right to play #1 Maryland. Is Quinnipiac having dreams of grandeur in another sport?

Still crazy that a (non-Ivy) college owns you. Still crazy that if you commit to a college because you like the coach and he bails, you can't bail, too.

Brown is steamrolling Hopkins, 13-3 in the third. Couldn't happen to nicer guys. Up something like 10-3, Brown red-dogged the Hopkins offense, goalie Jack Kelly called for a push and went off, Brown still doubled player with the ball, Hopkins finally got a point blank shot and the backup Peter Scott made a fabulous save. 8-1 third quarter ends 14-3 Brown. Final 17-8 and announcers made up for the lack of a close game by reminding viewers how loaded Hopkins will be next year. Brown gets Yale or Navy at Brown next weekend.

Are we agreed it's okay to root for Brown because they are of our kind and/but they're not Harvard (or Yale)? I'd really like to see Brown go all the way. Plus they have a nice stadium for lax and soccer (Stevenson Field, capacity 3500), although today it was bursting at the seams. (This is the field Cornell needs. Our Berman Field only has about 1,000 capacity and IIRC the seats aren't that far above the ground where Stevenson Field is really elevated. Let's see if Schoellkopf Field feels more intimate if the field is moved right up to the edge of the Crescent seating.

I'm rooting for Brown. They're fun to watch. Yale is dull, I'm hoping they lose to Navy. I really don't want to see Brown lose to Yale in the quarters; Navy would be an easier opponent for Brown.

I also wish Cornell had a dedicated lax/soccer field with 3K or so seating. But an indoor facility is a bigger need for a successful lax program.

Quarterfinals at Brown will be in the football stadium, site of Cornell's epic 1976 championship win over Maryland.

In the eastern bracket at Brown Saturday, Maryland is too much for Syracuse. Brown is being played close by Navy. Brown is missing Dylan Molloy who, shades of Rob Pannell, broke his foot. Happened in the second half of last week's 17-8 romp over Hopkins; the announcers early in the fourth said it's a runaway and Brown should pull its starters to avoid a rout and to avoid injuries.

Actually, I saw Brown do something like this when they played Yale. It came down in the neighborhood of the goal and bounced out of bounds. Brown had an attackman positioned by the end line, so the ref called it a shot and gave the ball to Brown.

Now that's a neat trick with an attackman on the end line so the heave becomes a quote shot.

Molloy gets one more year since he's a junior.

Molloy gets another year but his supporting cast will be mostly gone, so it's unlikely Brown will be a top-4 team next year.

Lots of excellent play in the tournament, including by last-team-in Navy and 3rd-to-last in UNC. Cornell will have a tough task to stay at a nationally competitive level.

Maryland lost a 2-goal lead late in the fourth quarter of the 2016 NCAA lax title game and fell in OT to North Carolina. That keeps alive Maryland's incredible streak of not winning a title game since 1975 - 42 seasons. Since then, the Terps are 0-8 in title games. From 2011-2016, they made the final four 5 times with 4 title game losses. UNC hadn't won since 1991. It was also UNC over defending champ Maryland in the women's title game.

Maryland just got by Brown in the 2016 semifinal. Dylan Molloy played (barely) with a broken foot, Brown made up a 4-goal deficit late to force OT. Too bad for Bruno, which is a senior-heavy team, unless they have an incredible recruiting season.

In comparison, it's been 39 seasons since Cornell's last championship, since then 0-3 in title games.

Dom Starsia (Brown '73) was released as Virginia lax coach after 24 years, 13 final fours, and 4 NCAA titles. But the last title was 2011. In the ACC, Virginia was 1-15 the last four years.

[www.laxmagazine.com] says the number of coaching changes is up in the last five years and talks about how schools are quicker to make a change in head coaches after only a couple bad seasons (Richie Meade at Navy, for example).

It's pretty late in the season for Virginian to find a new head coach. Maybe they'll punt on 2017, temporarily elevate an assistant, and use the year to find one? [www.streakingthelawn.com] says longtime assistant Marc Van Arsdale has his contract extended through the end of the 2017 season. It described Starsia's departure as "termination without cause." According to the [www.washingtonpost.com], Starsia's 2012 contract called for him to make $250,000 plus longevity bonuses of $225,000 if he was head coach as of January 2015 and $150,000 if he was coach as of the contract's January 2017 termination date. Before the 2012 contract he was making just over $150,000.

Interesting to see how long Brown holds on to Sean Kirwin (Tufts '12), assistant at Tufts 2 years and now Brown 2 years. He's getting a lot of credit for developing the Brown attack. A Virginia would probably like to see him as head coach somewhere at a small school for 2-3 years (or at least have another couple years at Brown) and if he makes things happen there, make him a nice offer.

A five-year-old Bloomberg story says several Big Ten schools committed about $10 million top make their men's and women's lax teams competitive and annual operating expenses are about $2M a year. [www.bloomberg.com]

This is an arms race the Ivies may have trouble matching. Except that Brown probably was the best team this year until Dylan Molloy broke his foot. He did win the Tewaarton.

Can anyone comment on Ryan and Dom no longer being part of the lacrosse program?

I am pretty sure that Ryan only needs one semester to graduate so I am guessing -- no inside info; just a guess -- that he is taking a leave of absence in the fall and will be back in the spring. Others have done this in the past.

That post must have been deleted by the moderator, as there's nothing of that nature on the Cornell thread.

The post was entered about 5 pm yesterday and was up for approx 30 min before it was deleted. It was authored by a person who claimed to be a friend and teammate of Dom's (and a recent grad) and who stated that Kerwick called DM in June to tell him he was " no longer welcome" on the team. The poster also stated that there were no off-field incidents; no other specifics were provided.
