Eben Novy-Williams, Bloomberg
The University of Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team had a $1.5 million loss last year [2013], highest in the country and more than triple the combined losses of the three other schools competing for the national title this weekend. ... the Fighting Irish spent $1.69 million and had $142,169 in revenue, the lowest in Division I, according to data submitted to the U.S. Department of Education. Virginia Military Institute, which hasn’t had a winning record since 2000, had the next-lowest revenue at $287,295.

Of the remaining [FF] teams, Denver is the only one to record a profit during the 2013 season, reporting revenue $1 higher than its $2.03 million in expenses. Duke, which also won the NCAA title in 2010, had a loss of $85,705, while Maryland’s loss was $376,773.

Denver brought in $2 million in revenue last year? Selling Bill Tierney bobbleheads? Source: [www.bloomberg.com]

I think schools are just creative when it comes to what they categorize as revenue.

Cornell, for instance, brings in exactly as much revenue as it needs to break even on athletics. Amazing!

Well, the R&E expense summary shows net revenue for teams at about $874K and "not allocated" expenses of approx. $6.6M & revenues of $5.7M. Many accounting systems have catch-all categories that capture surpluses and deficits, so that totals always add up to zero. Maybe these unallocated categories play that role. Besides the net revenue from teams, we'd need to look more closely at the two categories to know if there are any profits there.

I'd also want to look inside some of the other categories. E.g., did the AD really need that recruiting trip to Monte Carlo? rolleyes

Cornell Athletics approaches the last month of the fiscal year, so the fundraising campaign is publishing reports to spur gifting. They include the sport-by-sport gifts in the spreadsheet here.

Men's lacrosse has usually exceeded its goal, but with one month to go they are barely over half, in spite of a season that greatly exceeded expectations. Is this an indication of a backlash at the handling of Ben DeLuca? Has anyone kept reports from prior years to compare?

I don't have precise figures but a lot of major sports tend to lag at this point in the season and then make or exceed their goal in the last few days. That some sports are at or over 100% at this point in time is actually unusual.

Here are the stats from last year as of June 4. Lacrosse was at 68%. Interesting that last year they were at the exact same percentage toward their goal of 73%

Strength and conditioning jumps out this year, already at 287%, $160K from only 5 people. It wasnt even a line item last year
