Johnny Football is Johnny Classroom, too. If there were any doubts about Johnny Manziel's smarts and more important, football intelligence, they should have been answered with his score of 32 on the Wonderlic test. NFL Network's Albert Breer reports thats how many questions Manziel answered correctly out of 50 at the NFL Scouting Combine back in February. Comparing some of the game's greats to the Heisman-winning Texas A&M quarterback, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees each had a 28, while Tom Brady posted a 33. In this year's quarterback draft class, although Manziel was trumped by Ivy League prospect Jeff Mathews of Cornell (40), he did beat out fellow first-round projections Blake Bortles of Central Florida (28) and Teddy Bridgewater of Lousiville (20).

Does anyone follow this stuff closely enough to know whether Mathews is considered to be a genuine NFL prospect, rather than just the afterthought in yet another Manziel article?

Junior year, with a year more for him to show more, he was considered a definite draft candidate. His arm and IQ are assets. His athleticism is less certain.

Chatter on this afternoon's Moving the The Chains (Sirius XM) was that Matthews would be a nice late round pick for the Chicago Bears. His arm and IQ might be a good fit with Marc Trestman's offense.

I could see Andy Reid drafting him in the 6-7th round

If you have uncertainty in rounds 5-7, everyone remembers Tom Brady was available in round 6, but not a late-blooming lineman.

No success here, either. The only Ivy drafted was Princeton DT Carun Reid. I hope someone picks Jeff up.

Jeff was the only player who was asked about specifically by the reporters. Any insights on why he got that extra attention?

BIG ARM: Former Cornell quarterback Jeff Mathews throws a nice spiral. He also has a strong arm. Smith said the Falcons had to work with him on taking some steam off of his passes. They want to see him throw with more touch.

ESPN blogger Vaughn McClure commented on Mathews each day.

"Undrafted quarterback Jeff Mathews from Cornell, at 6-4, looked like Matt Ryan standing in the pocket. And Mathews' first pass of the day was a dart. He wasn't outstanding, but solid. It was hard to get a read on the quarterbacks, running backs, receivers and tight ends with not much going on during Day 1."

Atlanta just traded with Houston for QB T.J. Yates, so that complicates things for Mathews

Yes - Local Atlanta sports radio has TJ pretty much penciled in as the number 2 QB.

Hard Knocks at Faslcons' camp starts tonight on HBO. May be some material there.

In the first Falcons preseason game, Matthews didn't play. In the second game he went 1-3 for 18 yards. Meanwhile their 2013 7th round pick is getting at least a couple of drives a game. Maybe something changes this week but I don't even think Matthews is the #3 guy in camp.

There is speculation that the Falcons plan to park Mathews on the practice squad, and that they don't want to showcase him too much for other teams. But who really knows what they are thinking.

Unfortunately Jeff was cut by the Falcons today. He did not make the 75 person squad. I do not know if he still has a chance to be part of the practice squad.

The Cornell product is the Ivy League's all-time leading passer (11,284 yards), but a tough-love meeting with offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter indicated Mathews was struggling with the complex verbiage of an NFL .

Mathews also struggled on the practice field to imitate the authoritative cadence of starting signal-caller Matt Ryan, making it all the more difficult to establish himself as a keeper in the quarterback room.

With projected backup T.J. Yates having thrown two interceptions versus the Texans and 2013 seventh-round pick Sean Renfree no sure commodity, Mathews had a real shot to stick. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to command the offense and execute well enough in the limited practice reps he had.

Even with cameras on him, Ryan was unafraid to give a cold, honest assessment of Mathews' lack of conviction. That was at least part of what cost Mathews to be released in the latest round of cuts. He didn't play one snap in the preseason game, and he was the last player shown in the episode to be released.

Mathews has a strong arm, as even Ryan will attest to, but he must be more of a leader and display better confidence if he's meant to have a shot in the NFL again.
