Cornell comes from behind, wins the opener 10-8.

Cornell kicks off its 119th men's lacrosse season, 1 pm at Schoellkopf Field vs. Hobart. [www.cornellbigred.com] Game on. With limitations: West Stands only. Closest restrooms at Teagle Hall. Predicted high of 45 degrees. Redcast audio and video. No Rob Pannell. All sound like limitations.

Somebody who's there: Love to see a panorama picture of the field and snow piled on the edges. #EatYourHeartOutSochi LGR! [edit add: Never mind on the snow photo. It's nothing.]

H 1 2 4 1 - 8
C 2 2 2 6 - 12

Cor 2-1 after one period. Both goals from Connor Buczek. Cornell leading Hobart about 2-1 on shots ground balls. Sophomore Brennan Donville in goal.

Cor 4-3 after two. Hobart with a game played already, runs off 3 straight to lead 3-2 then Cornell gets 2.

Hob 7-6 after three. Scoring in runs: Cornell 2, Hobart 3, Cornell 3. Then Hobart gets 1, Cornell answers a few seconds later. Hobart run ties it at 6 with a minute play in quarter, goes up 7-6 at the end. Unforced errors on attack hurting Cornell.

Q4 Cornell then Hobart don't convert on 30-second EMOs. Jr John Hogan ties it a 7 with 8 mins to play. Hobart up 8-7 with 6 to play. Last Cornell loss to Statesmen? 2004. Cornell down a man after the score but gains possession, kills penalty. Lintner scores his 3rd to tie at 8 with 2:36 to play. Hogan long shot 20 yards makes it 9-8 Cornell with 2:01 left. Tesoriero again controlls FO and Donovan scores 13 seconds later to make it 10-8 with 1:48 to play. 3 goals in a 48 seconds. Without Pannell. Tesoriero controls FO again. So if Hobart red dogs (pulls goalie) does Cornell shoot at the empty net? Syracuse would. Hobart doubleteams, draws a hold with :23 to play. Donovan goes to the empty cage, scores ENG. 11-8. Lintner scores with :12 to play. Final 12-8.

Cornell dominated on faceoffs, shots, ground balls, SAT scores, just about everything. Hobart goalie stood on his head to keep it close. We tossed the ball away too much. Didn't see stats but it didn't appear we had serious penalty problems.

Other games:
#10 Princeton opens, hosts unranked Hofstra, wins 12-10.
Brown 13-6 over Quinnipiac.
UMass 8-4 over Harvard
Duke 9-6 over Penn Friday.

Announcer Barry Leonard in the fourth quarter calls this "the start of the Matt Kerwick era."

Players of the game (WHCU): Doug Tesoriero 20x24 faceoffs, 2 assists. 2 - Jordan Stevens on D held Hobart top attacker scoreless. 3 - Matt Donovan 3 goals.

Excited for this season. Doesn't have the pressure that last year did. Expect a good effort and a W in the opener.

We'll see how the pressure builds during the season. I think the program needs a fresh face to lead it.

An observation on the scoring of the last two Cornell goals: After Cornell scored to make it 10-8, Hobart called a TO. When Cornell controlled the ensuing faceoff and went on offense, the guys passed on a couple of good scoring opportunities and seemed satisfied to just maintain possession. Cornell called a TO with about 1:20 left. Coming out of the TO it was clear the plan was to kill the clock. The player with possession behind the goal was mauled pretty badly by 3 Hobart players trying to strip the ball, leading to the EMO. I really think that the aggressiveness leading to the penalty helped with the decision to give the guys the green light to continue scoring. It also looked like Hobart assumed that Cornell wouldn't try to score as there was no effort either by the goalie or any other player to attempt to protect the goal. So what the heck -- it wasn't like we had a 10 goal lead and it would be obnoxious to score another goal. The 12-8 victory looks better than a 10-8 victory to outsiders as well.

Cornell also used the hidden ball play -- I think it was Hogan's goal to go up 9-8. He appeared to pass to Edmonds [I think] up top but kept the ball and rifled a shot with the goalie out of position. The play fooled everyone. It was classic!

And, Tesoriero was a horse at X.
They will probably lose their share, but a great beginning after all the program has endured.

Oh, and....UMD 16 Sucksacuse 8!!
