Not sure if we need a separate thread for game discussion and roll call. Cornell fans were out in force on Sunday, and hopefully will be there again this weekend. Tickets are twice the price... but you can stay for the Yale-Syracuse game as well.

Saturday, May 18th
2013 NCAA Lacrosse Tournament – Quarterfinal Round - Cornell Big Red vs. Ohio State (12:30PM)
Parking is $10 per vehicle. By Metro, Green Line to College Park, then Shuttle-UM Bus 104 to Stamp Student Union. The stadium is an approximate .25 mile walk from the bus stop.
Cost: $19 (discount of $6 off of the box office price). Tickets will be available at Will Call at Byrd Stadium before the game. You must purchase your tickets by Friday, May 17 at noon to be included in the Cornell block.
Contact: Joshua Novikoff at 202-441-8863 or jbn6@cornell.edu
Tickets: [cornellclubdc.org]
See the Cornell Club of Washington FB page for upcoming info on tailgating - [www.facebook.com]

NCAA escalates ticket pricing, now charges for parking for this second round. Inside Lacrosse noted the eight first round games drew only about 2,000 fans each and that was on the site of the higher-seeded school, not a neutral site. The 2900 Cornell-Maryland drew was the highest or one of the eight highest turnouts.

This is like NCAA hockey: The NCAA regionals sometimes draw just a thousand or two thousand attendees.

Byrd Stadium is pretty nice. It has luxury boxes and press boxes that stretch up a half dozen rows or so. From the stands, it looks like the wide of a top-heavy cruise ship. Nice sculpture / reflection garden outside.

If you have a choice of parking, Lot 1 is close / closest to the stadium and that's where the tailgating was last weekend.

[insidelacrosse.com] writer notes the games at Maryland potentially compete for fans with the Preakness. That must be it. Not this:

College Park, Md to
... New Haven, 300 miles
... Ithaca, 350 miles
... Syracuse, 375 miles
... (the) Columbus, Ohio, 400 miles

South Bend to Indianapolis to 145 miles.

Why buy in advance when the stadium is huge?

Exactly. Looking at the ticket purchase process online, for general admission, I get charged a $2 fee, and then get hit with either a $3 Will Call fee or $2 Print-at-home fee, either of which is pretty ridiculous. OR I could walk up day-of-game and save $4-5.

If you buy ahead of time through the Cornell Club of Washington you can get the group rate which is $19, $6 less than face value, no will call fee.

A flattering story on Thomas Keith in the Ithaca Journal
It’s pretty odd to hear a former high school lacrosse All-American admit that he wasn’t very good at the game four years ago.

But that type of humility is common for Cornell senior long-stick midfielder Thomas Keith. And it’s one of the major reasons that the Long Island native has emerged as one of the unsung heroes and quiet leaders for the Big Red men’s team.

Schoellkopf Field south

Pannell
You don’t really know what it’s like to have those emotions until it is your senior year and you know that it could potentially be your last game. Personally, I almost started crying running out to the field. Two minutes before face-off, I was just so emotional running out there as the (Big Red Pep) band starting playing and the fans started cheering.

That fourth quarter was hilarious. Ohio State didn't want to try and Cornell decided that was OK. I want to see two unseeded Ivy teams in the final four.

typically even at the most well attended final four games, there are always seats available at the stadium on game day. Also, since most fans don't attend both games, it is fairly easy to move around even if the game is reported as near sellout. You also don't get stuck holding Monday tickets if you decide not to go on championship day. Cornell's ticket offer is for both games

Ill-advised shot by a Yale kid with about three minutes left was saved and turned into Syracuse's fifth goal, opening the door for the comeback.

Dominating on face-offs was important both this weekend and last. My impression over the last several years, including earlier this year, is that face-offs have been a serious weak spot for Cornell. Has something changed?

From his roster page:

Doug Tesoriero

http://cornellbigred.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=31522&path=mlax
At Syosset HS
A high school All-American and a four-year letter winner, Tesoriero helped Syosset high school to a pair of Nassau County Class A championships. In 2008, he led Syosset to the Long Island Class A championship before finishing as the New York State Class A finalists. He served as team captain twice and was named to the New York Scholar Athlete team three times. Tesoriero was an all-county selection as a senior and as a junior and was named all-conference as a sophomore. He also lettered twice in football and was named all-conference as a senior.

If I recall correctly, he was one of the top face-off players in the country in high school. I think we're seeing a combination of maturation and coaching to raise him to a comparable stature at the college level. Since this position is more 1-on-one than virtually any other position in lacrosse, there still may be some opposing players with whom he matches up poorly (e.g., Yale's Levings). (Of course, there's a face-off unit, so even this involves teamwork.) This may leave the impression that this is a weakness for the team.

Doug and A.J. must have gained lots of confidence the past two weeks. Let's hope it transfers over to keeping their games at such a high level for the next two games, or perhaps even a higher level.

We get Duke.

With the Danowski/Greer* career points record also essentially on the line.

Stats from the laxpower game update:

Final Stats:
Shots: 43-32 Duke
Saves: 13-2 ND
Ground Balls: 31-21 Duke
Face Offs: 16-10 Duke
Clears: Duke 19/19; ND 18/23
EMOs: Duke 0/0; ND 3/4
TOs: Duke: 17; ND: 19

I've been reading that Duke's defense & goaltending is their weak link. Notre Dame's defense was highly regarded. I think, as much as I hate Duke, the cards fell right for Cornell with this matchup.

*I'm pretty sure the TV isn't listing Greer as the co-record holder due to Greer's 5th year at Bryant, which was quasi-Division I at the time.

Will Cleveland does cover Cornell sports for the IJ. I'm a little fuzzy on the protocols, but I would have expected a dateline of College Park if he had actually been there. Instead, it's blank. [www.ithacajournal.com] His post-game quote from Jason Noble is explicitly by phone. Maybe it goes the other way. The dateline on his story about the win over Maryland had a dateline of Ithaca. The stories about the Ithaca College baseball team's progression to the College World Series credit the staff with a dateline Auburn. Wikipedia says the dateline reflects where the story was written. Perhaps they just slipped and left it out.

A dateline with a staff credit (not an individual writer credit) often means that the article is a rewrite of a news release. Or that the story was written by someone who listened to a radio broadcast or watched the game on TV. Personally, I think an article shouldn't have a dateline unless the reporter was on site at the event, and that's been the practice at most media outlets where I've worked.

The Journal is undoubtedly in a tough spot because Gannett has gutted that place. I wonder how much the lack of a Sunday print edition plays into some of their travel decisions with CU sports. But then again, isn't that why you have a website?

InsideLacrosse "Winners and Losers.

Not a bad discussion. Two interesting quotes:

John Jiloty (@jjiloty)

Rob Pannell — I think RP3 locked up the Tewaaraton Trophy with his eight-point outing on Saturday. He’s now six points away from tying Matt Danowski’s all-time NCAA points record (despite playing in nine less games), and he’s lined up to have a season for the ages: shot at Cornell’s first NCAA title since 1977, NCAA points record and Player of the Year honors. He seems to be doing it the right way too: spread the ball around and making his teammates better. Steve Mock is also having a season for the ages, and Pannell is a big part of that.

Late Leads — If this weekend proved anything, it reinforced what might sound like common sense, but is so crucial for teams competing at this level — no lead is safe. I don't enjoy interviewing the losing teams come playoff time. The look on Marcus Holman's face as he answered questions from media members nearly got me choked up. But it's the way the ball bounces sometimes. If anything, some of the teams and players who are reeling from unthinkable losses will only become better and stronger people from that sort of experience.

The first, I was wondering what the game differential was. The second, give me a break.

Well, I got choked up hearing repeated TV references to Pannell and Mock "taking that step to greatness." translation: shot that went in, in a playoff game they won.
