In Coach Koll's prematchup report, he joked that Stryker says that he beats up on his brother when he's home for break and Jochym's match will let everyone know if he's blowing smoke.

I know the past 2-3 years, there were whispers that CU had a legitimate shot at the team championship. Given the number of unseeded wrestlers, I'm guessing that's a long-shot this year.

NCAA wrestling: No clear-cut favorite for team title

Minnesota, Oklahoma State, Cornell and Missouri could make it a six-team race.

...

Cornell’s lineup features two-time NCAA champ Kyle Dake at 157 and No. 1 Cam Simaz at 197, but the Big Red need help from five unseeded wrestlers.

This is not going to be our year. Last year was a much better shot but we had a rough go of it in the semifinals (lost three of four) and Penn State performed even better than they were supposed to.

Peppleman's brother got pinned in his opening round. Ugh. The conference as a whole is not doing well. (Cornell, though, is right where they are supposed to be.)

2. Minnesota 33.0
3. Oklahoma St. 28.5

5. Iowa 26.0
6. Illinois 23.0
7. Oklahoma 19.5

9. Northwestern 18.0
12. Wyoming 17.5

Up next:

Quarterfinals
125: Perrelli v. Zanetta (U - Pitt)
157: Dake v. Hickman (8 - Bloomsburg) [Dake beat Hickman earlier this year]
184: Bosak v. Steinhaus (5 - Minnesota) [Bosak has beaten Steinhaus each of the last two years.]
197: Simaz v. Hernandez (9 - Wyoming)

Cornell is favored in all four QF matches. LGR!

Consolation
133: Arujau v. Kalil (U - Navy) [IIRC, Arujau defeated Kalil earlier this year wrestling unattached]
141: Nevinger v. Krop (U - Princeton) [Nevinger lost to Krop 3-2 at the Princeton dual]
165: Peppleman v. Polz (9 - Illinois) [Peppleman lost to Polz earier this year]
285: Jochym v. Lester (U - Columbia) [Jochym is 2-2 vs. Lester this year, with a pin and an 8-1 win the last two meetings]

All four of these are winnable matches but in none would I say that Cornell is a clear favorite. LGR!

125: Perrelli starts the day with a 6-3 win over Pitt and moves on to the National Semifinals, which guarantees him a spot on the podium as an All-American. Congrats, Frank! (He also caught a break, on paper anyway, when #10 Nick Megaludis beat #2 Zach Sanders.)

133: Arujau has a strong first period but can't keep it up. Loses 8-2 to Kalil and he's eliminated. See you next year, Nick, when you'll have a full season with the squad to improve.

141: Nevinger doesn't screw around. At around 2 minutes in, Nevinger throws Krop to his back and pins him at 2:01! Still two more TOUGH matches to get to AA but a great win for Nevinger. Up next is #7 Nelson from Virginia.

157: Dake is blowing through the bracket. For the third time in three matches, Dake pins his opponent roughly halfway through the second period. He's slipping, I guess, since the first two pins came in the first period. On to the semifinals, as Dake is an All American for the third straight year. Up next is #5 Ganbayar Sanjaa from American. Dake faced Sanjaa last year in the semis at 149 and won 4-0.

165: Peppleman can't handle Polz and loses 7-1.

184: Bosak with a tense 1-0 win over Steinhaus and moves on to the semis and is, IIRC, a three-time All-American. Up next #9 Austin Trotman from Appalachian State, who knocked of the #1 seed. Cornell gets another break (on paper) from the draw; Bosak beat Trotman 2-0 earlier this year. Bosak's nemesis, Hamlin of Lehigh, is in the other semifinal.

197: Simaz with an 8-2 win over Hernandez and he's on to the semis and is an All American for the 4th time. He'll face #5 Cayle Byers of Oklahoma State.

285: Jochym can't handle Lester this time. According to the 1160 reporter, he was taking chances, failing and getting caught. Loses 9-2 and is eliminated.

All right, coming up for tonight, 4 Cornellians in the semis and 1 in a consolation match to get AA.

Semis
125: Perrelli (6) v. Megaludis (10 Penn State) Perrelli beat Megaludis earlier this year.
157: Dake (1) v. Sanjaa (5 American) Dake beat Sanjaa last year in the NCAA 149 semis.
184: Bosak (4) v. Trotman (9 App. St.) Bosak beat Trotman earlier this year.
197: Simaz (1) v. Byers (5 Ok. St.) Haven't faced each other.

Consolation
141: Nevinger (U) v. Dardanes (9 Minnesota) Nevinger beat Dardanes earlier this year.

Cornell is sitting a distant 2d with Iowa and Minnesota right behind. Penn State is a collective beast.

Interesting Cornell-brother news:

157: After getting pinned in his first match, #4 Walter Peppleman will face #8 Hickman for a spot on the podium.
285: After losing to Cornell's Jochym in his first match, #11 Tucker Lane, brother of backup 285 Stryker Lane, has survived through the consolation bracket and will make AA if he beats the #10 wrestler in his next match.

That scoresheet is out of date... but still accurate regarding the rest of the Ivy League. Cornell has pulled much farther away.

Semis
125: Perrelli (6) loses to Megaludis 3-2 in OT. He'll face #8 Mango of Stanford in the consolation semis. If he wins, he wrestles for 3d; if he loses he wrestles for 5th.
157: Dake (1) wins 4-0 over Sanjaa, who apparently spent the match running away to avoid getting beaten BADLY. Dake faces #2 St. John of Iowa in the finals.
184: Bosak (4) wins 4-2 over Trotman in SV. He'll face defending champ #6 Wright of Penn State.
197: Simaz (1) wins 6-3 over Byers. He'll face #2 Honeycutt of Edinboro, who I believe he dominated earlier this year.

Consolation
141: Nevinger beat Dardanes 5-2 to move into the medal round, where he lost 9-3 to #4 Mangrum of Oregon State. He'll face #8 Little of NC State for 7th place.

Cornell has 5 All-Americans AGAIN. As a team, Cornell is comfortably in 4th, just out of third and possibly in shouting distance of second.

1.	Penn State	124.0
2.	Minnesota 94.5
3.	Iowa 87.5
4.	Cornell 86.0

In brother news, older brother Walter Peppleman recovered to make AA, but will wrestle for 7th, which is probably a little disappointing, since he was the 4 seed. Older brother Tucker Lane lost a close one in the round of 12 and didn't make AA.

I posted incomplete results, so here's an update to the team scores. It isn't as close as I thought.

1-2 3-6 7-8 Highest possible score, not including bonus points
1.	Penn State	124.0 5 1 0 148.5
2.	Minnesota	101.5 2 5 0 132
3.	Iowa 93.0 3 2 1 115
4.	Cornell 86.0 3 1 1 103.5

We can pass Iowa for third but Minnesota would have to have a horrible day to drop behind us.

Perrelli won the 125 consolation semifinals over Mango 10-3, then lost 6-4 in OT in the 3d place match to the #2 wrestler in the country. Congratulations to Frank Perrelli for outperforming his seed, finishing in 4th place and graduating as an All-American.

Nevinger won the 7th place match over Little 10-3, Congratulations to Mike Nevinger for outperforming his seed, finishing in 7th place and getting his first All-American placement as a sophomore.

Update on the team scores... All of the schools did a good job in the medal rounds, so none of the positions changed. It is techinically possible for Iowa to catch Minnesota for second place, if they win all three of their finals and Minnesota loses both of theirs, since 1st place is worth 4 points (second place points are already factored in to the scores). Cornell could catch Iowa if we win all of our finals (reasonable, since we are the higher seed in all - but probably Bosak is still an underdog...), Iowa loses all three of theirs (unlikely that McDonough will lose at 125) AND Cornell picks up bonus points.

All that said, the top of the table last night is the same heading into tonight and is almost certainly going to be the same after the finals.

Current scoring:
                        Score
1.	Penn State	128.5
2.	Minnesota	113.5
3.	Iowa 103.5
4.	Cornell 90.5

I had to stay off of the internet all night so that I could watch the DVR'd finals matches. HOLY SHIT THIS WAS AMAZING.

Kyle Dake completely dominated his opponent in the finals for the third year in a row. St. John barely tried to score on him and never came close.

Steve Bosak did a great job getting out from bottom twice and finished a beautiful shot in sudden victory to win the title.

Cam Simaz just owned Honeycutt after the first period and graduates a champion after finishing 8th, 3d and 3d.

I am so proud of this team. Every seeded wrestler met or exceeded their seed. Mike Nevinger went from being not seeded at all to finishing in 7th place, and he's a sophomore. Nick Arujau, Marshall Peppleman and Maciej Jochym all picked up points for the Red, some of them in upsets. The only wrestler who didn't score for the Red, Chris Villalonga, had an insanely tough draw: both wrestlers he faced were in the top 15 nationally.

Three national champs, five All-Americans, 8 wrestlers who scored points, 9 qualifiers and a 4th place finish for the team. Rob Koll has done an incredible job for this program.

Wow.

Those matches were lots of fun to watch. Congrats to Kyle, Steve, Cam, Coach Koll and the entire team and the extended Cornell wrestling community. Awesome.

Every seeded wrestler met or exceeded their seed.
In fact, the only seeded wrestlers who did not exceed their seed were #1 seeds.

I liked the comment at the end of the telecast that said something like - Tonight was all about the Big 10 and the Big Red.

I guess the only question now is does Dake move up to take on Taylor next year.

That would be incredibly ballsy but my guess is no. There haven't been any whispers that Dake was having trouble cutting to 157 the same way the cuts to 141 and 149 appeared to wear on Dake in prior years. He was still unbeatable but the motor didn't seem to run as well late in matches or tournaments.

4 classes and 4 NCAA titles has a certainy symmetry. He'd get a mention in SI's Faces in the Crowd and it would give Mister Lacrosse Who Also Covers Wrestling Quint Kessenich something to talk about in the post-bout interview. But if he didn't win it all next year at 157 ...

Success of the wrestling team was a nice antidote to the men's and women's hockey teams that didn't reach their pinnacles of achievement.

First, it remains to be seen what the men's hockey team will do.

Second, as symmetrical as it would be to get titles at four weights... Taylor is insane. I'd love to see them wrestle but I don't think it is worth it for Dake. I'm already looking forward to next year, whatever he decides to do.

The women's team did at least as well as the wrestling team did. Let's not try and underplay it. Individual wrestlers reached their "pinnacles of achievement", but the team didn't.

I agree Taylor is insane, but in Dake's post-match interview with Quint he talked about looking for new challenges, saying something like he was more motivated than he would have been just beating the same guys again.

The Cornell wrestling team scored more points this year than in the two prior years, when the team finished second. Having 3 national champs is an amazing accomplishment.

This is just a quibble - both the wrestling team and the women's hockey team achieved tremendous things - but while the women's team is likely disappointed that they didn't win the national title, Cornell was, quite literally, the fourth best tournament team in the country and that is exactly where they finished. Unless the Penn State bus crashed on the way to the arena, there was no chance to take away their title.

A big thanks to folks on this thread, especially ugarte, for the informative posts throughout the season. I was never a wrestler or fan growing up, but a good friend of mine while at Cornell had been a highschool wrestler and I became a casual fan of the Cornell team by attending some duals with him. It's nice being able to follow the team by reading the updates/reports here.

This might not be the best place to put this, but yesterday wrestler Warner Phipps '12 was arrested for threatening someone with a gun.

This quite possibly marks the first time that Phipps has been mentioned in the Sun.
