General 2010-11 Wrestling thread

There really isn't enough discussion on a per-match basis to warrant cluttering the forum with new threads, so here's a convenient little place for the wrestling devotees to gather.

Starting with: Cornell is the unanimous #1 in the preseason NWCA Coaches Poll. We are also #1 at Amateur Wrestling News, WIN Magazine and The Open Mat.

Cornell opens the season on 11/19 at home against Central Michigan who, depending who you ask, is somewhere between #5 and #9.

11/19 will be a busy night on campus, basketball, hockey and wrestling games all at once, half hour apart, I think this happened last year too on 11/20

Worth thinking about our lineup for this season.

Weight/Wrestler/Yr/Preseason Intermat ranking/comments

125 - Frank Perrelli, Jr, #12: One of the best backups in the nation last year going 21-5, should be solid starter.
133 - Mike Grey, Sr, #4: 6th place in 08, EIWA champ 10, just missed All-American last year.
141 - Chris Villalonga, Fr, #15: One of top 4 recruits nationally, undefeated in last 3 years of HS.
149 - Kyle Dake, So, #2: Returining NCAA champion, now moving up from 141 to 149.
157 - Open, possibly freshman Shanahan or Peppelman (listed as 165, was 160 in HS), or an upperclassman.
165 - Justin Kerber, Sr, #6: 2 time qualifier for NCAA with no All-Americans, 3rd at EIWAs.
174 - Mack Lewnes, Sr, #1: Undefeated season last year until the NCAA final.
184 - Steve Bosak, So, #6: NCAA qualifier from last year, 29-15 overall record.
197 - Cam Simaz, Jr, #1: 3rd place from last season at NCAAs, EIWA champ.
285 - Open, heard rumors of one of these potential guys taking time off last spring to train.

Ideally one of the freshman could be a top 15 type at 157, and we could get a decent performance from heavyweight, at least a Nationals qualifier. This would really load the deck. Should be a great season.

If both woman's hockey and wrestling fail to with the NCAA title, I will be supremely disappointed. Both are favorites on paper.

I don't know if women's hockey can be called favorites on paper. While we should be right there, UMD has a bunch of players back from Olympic play, and they didn't lose too much

No. 41 Bricker Dixon (Park Hill, MO)
College Choice Cornell
Projected College Weight Class: 125

Dixon became the fourth InterMat Top 100 recruit to commit to Cornell this recruiting season. He is a three-time state finalist and 2010 state champion. He finished third in the Junior National freestyle competition at 119 pounds this past summer in Fargo.

Dixon on his decision to commit to Cornell: "It was a very tough decision but one that I'm extremely happy with. At this point in time, Cornell is the most balanced school between wrestling and academics. Ultimately, I have to put myself in the best position to succeed not only in wrestling but in my career after wrestling and Cornell seemed to be the perfect place to do that."

Dixon on Cornell coach Rob Koll: "Coach Koll was great during the whole recruiting process. He has taken the Cornell wrestling program from the bottom to being ranked No. 1 in the country during his career as a coach, which to me, was impressive. I really got the sense that he genuinely cares about his athletes and that was important to me. I can't wait to wrestle under him for the next four years."

Dixon on Cornell's chances of winning a national championship this season: "I think Cornell has a very good shot at winning the team race this year. They have an experienced team with great leaders. I think that there is a lot of parity between the top teams in the country but I believe that if everyone wrestles to their potential, Cornell will win the team title."

Dixon on Park Hill's wrestling program: "We have a very different program than we did last year after graduating four Division I signees. However, I think we are still in contention for a team state title this year. Our focus is to win as many individual championships as we can and the team aspect will fall into place. Our team is working very hard on a daily basis and I'm excited to see what we can accomplish."

Dixon on his emotions after winning a state title: "There is nothing more gratifying than setting a goal for yourself and reaching that goal. One of my coaches, Joe Gonier, was especially instrumental in helping me win my first state title. It was one of the best feelings I've ever had."

I wasn't aware that Cornell College (of Iowa) won a national team wrestling championship (1947). That would be a great little bit of trivia were Cornell University (of New York) to also pull off the feat.

Cornell "opened" the season yesterday by sending certain members of the squad to compete at the Binghamton open. The wrestlers don't officially represent the university but... they also kind of do. I've attached Coach Koll's report. The short version is this: we dominated the tournament.

For those of you who don't get the print edition of the Times, the story on the wrestling program was on the front page of the Monday sports section, along with the stories on the Giants and the Jets! That's good PR for the Big Red any time.

They are so proud of their wrestling history that they claim two titles, one NCAA and one AAU! [www.cornellcollege.edu] [www.cornellcollege.edu] Every year I set up next them at a local college fair, so it would be nice to match their record. They haven't, however, spent any weeks ranked #1 in football.

On friday Cornell is wrestling #6 Central Michigan. #1 vs. #6, you might expect a close match, right? Not me, I think the big red will roll.

125 - CMU unranked vs. Cornell Perelli (ranked #16) or Biscaha, who beat Perelli last week
133 - CMU Sentes (#6) vs. Mike Grey (#4)
141 - CMU unranked vs. Manson (#19) or perhaps somebody else
149 - CMU unranked vs. Dake (#2)
157 - CMU unranked vs. Meagher (won last week, but unranked)
165 - CMU Miller (#3) vs. Kerber (#5)
174 - CMU Bennett (#4) vs. Lewnes (#1)
184 - CMU unraked vs. Bosak (#4)
197 - CMU unranked vs. Simaz (#1)
HWT - CMU Trice (#2) vs. Lane/Snyder

So on paper, we should easily win at 125,174,184, and 197. Toss ups at 133, 141, 157, and 165. And they only have an advantage at HWT.

In general, I think you're very optimistic. Specifically, Mike Grey isn't going to win at 133 because he's injured and won't wrestle.

Not even a clear advantage in bonus points. We should get bonus at 149, 184 and 197 but stand a good chance of giving them up at 133 and Hwt. This is going to be a close match.

Also, Happy Birthday, Coach Koll.

My bad on Grey. Does look like he is injured. Even considering, this puts CMU as favorites for just two matches with the rest being toss ups or more favorable for Cornell. Certainly a match we SHOULD win, and could win by a fairly large margin.

I also shouldn't have been so quick to write off 133 with Grey out. His backup, Stanzione, won at Binghamton and dominated the #12 wrestler in the process.

Ha! If I figured it out, anyone can...

Go to "video" then "matches" and then, after a reasonable time passes to allow video editing, check the drop-down menu to filter the matches. It will be alphabetical under either Cornell or CMU; I don't know if home or visitor is listed first.

Does Central Michigan really have their names on the back of their singlets? That is terrible. Also we didn't have a very good start to this dual down 7-0 after the first two matches.

Manson, Dake, and Meagher wins give Cornell a 9-7 lead at the break. Dake looked gassed midway through the second period, but had enough for the win. Meet will end at 285 where CMU's guy is ranked #2 and Cornell is unranked.

165 - Kerber (#5)

Now there is a nickname I hope sticks.

For those who don't know, based on chalk, losing in the finals was a good result for Perrelli, Stanzione and Villalonga but a disappointing result for Simaz. Not a huge upset loss for Simaz, though. Coming into the match, Simaz was #1 and Kilgore #3 nationally.

Cornell sends four (Kerber, Lewnes, Bosak, Simaz) into the finals, knocking out two of the Oklahoma guys in the semis. Perrelli to wrestle for 5th/6th, Villalonga finished 8th, DJ Meagher, in a worrisome development, medically forfeited the consolation semifinals. He missed last season with a concussion, and is very important to this year's championship hopes.

[Edit: Perrelli takes 5th, beating highly-rated freshman Logan Stieber of tOSU 9-8.]

FYP. You had the seeds but not the places.

Great tournament all around. Manson was wrestling above his optimum weight (though he has been beaten out for that slot by Villalonga so far) so it isn't a surprise that he didn't do as well. Meagher was probably disappointed but it is hard to be "disappointed" in an injury. Everyone else met at least their seed.

Penn State put together a great tournament to tie Cornell for first place at the Southern Scuffle in Greensboro this weekend. Each school had three individual champions. It was a hell of a finish, too. Dake won the only head-to-head matchup between the schools in the championship round while Perrelli beat a PSU wrestler for 5th. Meanwhile, PSU's wrestler at 157 got a dominating Tech Fall. The PSU bonus points made up for Cornell's slight lead heading into the medal round, resulting in the dramatic tie.

Cornell had champs were Dake (149), Kerber (165) and Simaz (197). Bosak (187) lost his championship match to a higher rated wrestler, Lewnes (174) took third after being upset in the semis by a PSU frosh and Perrelli (125) took fifth in an impressive performance.

With Grey and Meagher out, the potential for a national championship drops dramatically. There is a huge hole in the lineup at 285 and the frosh are really going to have to step up at 133, 141 and 157. Up next, the National Duals. A lot of top teams are showing up so that will be another good early season measure of the depth of the team. After that, the Ivy season starts which will (barring a lot of injuries) be uninteresting except, maybe, Penn.

Not definitely out for the season AFAIK. Not sure when they'll be back, though.
There's also speculation as to how "battle-tested" they'll be for the EIWAs and NCAAs if they're out much longer. I'd rather they be healthy than battle-tested, but ideally they'd be both. Penn State will be a very tough competitor in Philadelphia come March.

Here's what I found in Coach's post on wrestlingreport.com (see link above 11/22/2010):

Mike Grey has been released to light drilling and will see his first action at the Southern Scuffle.
DJ did not wrestle in the Body Bar due to an injury suffered last weekend which he aggravated on Friday.

Is there more information that is out in the public domain? Or should I PM you for details....

That's the public info. Neither wrestled in last weekend's Southern Scuffle. Next action is this coming Saturday and Sunday at the National Duals. First round against tOSU, with Missouri the likely second round foe.

In Koll's latest Coach's Report he said that Grey will be back for the Iowa State match at the end of January (not exactly a promise but still a good sign that he'll have the Ivy season to get in shape for EIWA/NCAA competition).

Koll also said that Simaz may skip National Duals because of a knee injury sustained at the Scuffle.

Cornell wins their first round match with tOSU 27-6. Only losses were at 133 and 197 where the Big Red are without their starters (Grey and Simaz, who supposedly didn't even make the trip to Iowa).

Next up is Missouri. Without Cam, it is easy to see each side winning five bouts and the decision coming down to bonus points.

And that's what happens (sorry for being self-referential). Cornell wins five matches in a row: Dake (149), Meagher (157), Kerber (165), Lewnes (174) and Bosak (184). Mack and Steve get the bonus points that are the difference: Lewnes with a Major Dec. and Steve with a huge Tech. Fall. Cornell beats Missouri 18-15.

Special shout out to DJ, for a match saving win, and Jochym who filled in for Simaz at 197 and held a highly-regarded Missouri wrestler to a 4-2 decision.

Next up is Minnesota Sunday at noon eastern.

With two matches to go, Cornell leads Minnesota 20-10. Minnesota is heavily favored in both matches but even if they win both, Cornell will advance to the finals as long as our guys don't get dominated.

Tough loss for Cornell, and ends the possibility of an unbeaten season. Bosak and Kerber both lost, very surprising. Maybe a good wake up call for 2 months before nationals.

Seems like National duals were missing some big teams, as Penn State, Lehigh and Iowa look like they all could be top 5 teams at NCAAs.

I'm guessing Dake was sick. The only really burst of energy he displayed was in the first 10 seconds. He spent the rest of the match looking gassed, tending his bloodied mouth, fretting over his headgear, and surrendering points for stalling. The Binghamton wrestler certainly deserved to win as he was aggressive and essentially slapped Dake around during much of the third period.

I get the feeling Dake has been nursing injuries or illness for a while now. He's been winning close in matches that he should be dominating. Kind of conserving energy and doing just enough to win.

By the way, the loss to Lehigh dropped Cornell to #2 but I think we'd still be considered #1 if Grey - who scored an impressive 18-6 MD in his first match back - is really at full strength.

Well, he earned two points off of Dake stalling so it may have been in Dake's head more than on the mat. To his credit, he nailed Dake with a TD after Dake stalled his way into a tie.

In the first dual meet of the day, Cornell blanks Hofstra 45-0. A great win by true frosh Eifert at 165 to pin a top-20 wrestler and more pins from Dake, Lewnes and Simaz. Perelli, Kerber and Bosak all won matches that they were supposed to win while Manson beat a top-20 wrestler at 141.

The most-anticipated match of the day, between Grey (#6) and Ruggirello (#4) at 133, never happened because Hofstra forfeited. I don't know if Ruggirello is injured or didn't make weight.

FYP. Eifert wrestled in place of Kerber.
Thanks.

Cornell blew by Columbia as well, taking the dual 40-3. Pins by Dake, Lewnes and Simaz again; MDs from Perrelli, Grey, Manson and Bosak; wins from Eifert and Meagher. Lane had the team's only loss of the day, but it was a close loss to a guy I think he was expected to lose to.

And not without some drama. He had a reversal and backs at the end of the 2nd period, but they forgot to run the clock. After much discussion the referee decided to just give him the escape instead of the reversal and no backs. I think he actually likely got the reversal in the time that was left in the period. He then went on to lose by 1 due to 1:04 of riding time. Very unfortunate but it was a good match.

And Manson lost 2-1 to #10 Kemmerer when the ref awarded Kemmerer a penalty point for illegal contact. Apparently the Cornell squad thought it was a bogus call.

Cornell rolls over Princeton 44-0. Bonus points at every weight except 125 and 174. At 174 there was a strange double forfeit. Princeton was going to forfeit the weight but Koll wanted Lewnes to wrestle on Senior Day. So Lewnes wrestled at 184 instead. And still pinned his opponent.

125: #10 Perrelli Dec. #18 Frey, 4-1 (Cornell 3, Princeton 0)
133: #5 Grey Maj. Dec. Comunale, 19-6 (Cornell 7, Princeton 0)
141: Manson Maj. Dec. Bintliff 14-6 (Cornell 11, Princeton 0)
149: #3 Dake TF Ott 19-2 (5:00) (Cornell 16, Princeton 0)
157: #11 Meagher by fall 0:52 over Kolodzik (Cornell 22, Princeton 0)
165: Jesse Shanaman Maj. Dec. Seth Hazleton 12-2 (Cornell 26, Princeton 0)
174: Double Forfeit
184: Lewnes WBF 1:42 vs Travis Erdman (Cornell 32, Princeton 0)
197: #1 Simaz WBF vs Dan Santoro (Cornell 38, Princeton 0)
285: Lane WBF vs Charles Fox (Cornell 44, Princeton 0)

FWIW, I happened to be running through the dials last night and saw a replay of the finals of the National Duals on Fox Sports. Watched the Manson-Diaz match before I moved on.

The regular season is over and Cornell is looking pretty strong. I like our chances for NCAAs at this point. Grey is looking good coming back from injury, and confidence is high after total domination in the Ivy season. In general, I agree with intermat's rankings, and see the biggest threats to be Penn State, and Iowa in a couple of weeks. Will also be interested to see how close the race between Cornell and Lehigh will be at EIWAs.

Simaz is Ivy Player of the Year, and 7 are All-Ivy.

7 first team, 2 second team and an honorable mention. 10 out of 10 starters. Not bad.

Imagine the time when the worst starter on our football team is All-Ivy honorable mention, rather than the best.

State Championships are underway this weekend in Albany.

Advancing to the semis in Division 2:

Cornell recruits:

Senior Owen Scott (160) by 17-1 and 18-1. Freshman Burke Paddock (Warsaw) is in the opposite bracket. He's the brother of Ian Paddock (Ohio State) who went 2-2 in the NCAA tourny last year as a freshman and was named to the freshman All-Academic team.

Senior Craig Scott (171) by 11-1 and 16-0.

Article of the Scott twins in today's Rochester paper: [www.democratandchronicle.com]

Non-Cornell recruits, but of related interest:

Freshman William Koll (103) by 9-3 and by pin.

Junior Corey Dake (119) by 1-0 and 12-1.

Junior Chris Nevinger (152) by 5-0 and 16-1.

Another interesting wrestler to follow is Norwich 8th grader Tristan Rifanburg (112) who advanced to the semis in Division 2. Rifanburg became the first wrestler in NY history to win a State title as a 7th grader last year.

Update:

Scotts each pick up a championship.

Koll and Nevinger also win titles.

Dake lost 2-1 in his semi, forfeited his consi and will place 6th.

The Ithaca Journal article concentrates on the successful William Koll. They specify that Corey Dake's forfeit in he consolation was an injury default.

Troy Nickerson's record of 5 state championships is safe. Rifanburg lost in the finals.

T-Ri can still tie T-Ni.

Sure, but he'll be the second to do it. And who cares about that? (Unless he chooses Cornell, in which case the answer is "me".)

He's young enough that someone could still hand him a pair of skates and say "How do you get to Lynah Rink...?"

Even though he's in 8th grade, and I shouldn't make assumptions, the kid is wrestling in the 112-pound division. I'm not sure playing in the Schafer system is in his future.
