Lax Cornell 9 at Army 8 Final

The Ivy league continues to impress with Princeton beating number 3 Hopkins at M&T stadium in Baltimore.

1st quarter is over. Cornell had some nice opportunities in the beginning that turned in to pipes or saves by Army's goalie. Got a little sloppy with the passing in the second half of the quarter with several turnovers. Both of Army's goals were scored in tight, and they seem to be focusing on attacking our short stick defenders.

At the end of the half Cornell is looking a lot better. Doctor had 4 in close opportunities but a few nice saves by Army's goalie has kept him off the board. Cornell is dominating the ground balls, and frustrating Army on the ride.

Palesky is really keeping Army in this game. We can't even score from 2 feet in front of the net.

Boy, that was a grinder. Our middies come through in the clutch as did our goaler on Army's last possession. We'll need to do a much better job of finishing though if we have any chance of beating UVA. I think shots-on-goal was like 55-33 CU.

Whew... that was a close one.

Yeah, we had a lot of prime scoring opportunities in close that Palesky made nice saves on. I think he had 11 saves in the 3rd quarter alone. Fortunately Herer(sp?) made a couple of good saves late in the 4th for us and Seibald came through with a goal in the last 2 minutes.

The freshmen trio of Panell, Lang, and McMichael did a solid job against a pesky team. Will be nice to see them develop over the course of the season. I think the word is still out on Harer. I guess next week we'll find out alot more.

It seems that every game we play at Army is very tough. Even the '07 freight-train team just barely got out of West Point with a low-scoring win. I believe that was close to our lowest offensive output that year.

I didn't get to see the game, but from all I've heard it sounds like Army's goaler stood on his head. When is the last time a D-1 goaler recorded double-digit saves in one quarter? On the other hand, maybe we didn't take advantage of the chances we had?

Next week's competition at 'Ole Virginny is at a higher level altogether. We can't afford to not finish many doorstep shots, if we want to be competitive in that one.

Glad to hear that the G-men dropped a loud clanger to St. John's. Perhaps the Hoyas don't quite deserve all the hype and love heaped on them after the Maryland game.

Saw the game on the trusty DVR. A few observations:

1. Pannell would have had at least 5 assists had the rest of the attack (esp. Doctor) been able to finish. He's the real deal, and exactly the feeder this team lacked last season.
2. Cornell was ferocious on ground balls, and showed a much higher level of intensity than we saw in the Ohio St. debacle.
3. Both Lang and McMichael look like they will have real impact as Freshmen; surely looks like our strongest class in a number of years.
4. Harer was adequate, but he will really need to step it up if we are to have a shot against Virginia, Cuse, etc.
5. I don't quite understand why Romero remains on the first midfield. No offense intended, but all he seems to do is take wild shots from 20-yards.
6. Given Doctor's inability to finish, I was a bit surprised we didn't see Finn or Ritchie (did they play at all?)
7. I thought Army was better than last season, and more dangerous offensively, notwithstanding that the Red still controlled play.
8. Moyer and the rest of the D looked solid and poised. If the goaltending doesn't implode, I think we'll be ok on that end of the field.
9. Saw most of the Princeton-JHU game. While you can sometimes discount Hopkins' early season play, I think Princeton looked better than I've seen them in a number of years, and we'll have to have our "A" game to take them down.

Yeah Gtown did drop a clanger...losing to the Johnnies is embarrassing. Didn't know they even HAD a program. And Hop pretty much got blown out by PU. (it was 12-4 after 3) I thought Hop was supposed to have a vaunted D?? The Big Red should move up to #3 in the polls..not that it matters though.

Yes, yes it was. It was also frickin' freezing.

The one problem I noticed with Pannell, perhaps because he got frustrated with the lack of finishing by his teammates, is in the 3rd quarter he took a few weak, inadvisable shots, that were easy saves for the goalie. Shots that are not worth giving up possession for.

The refs seemed to have issues all game. There was one faceoff, where I swear to god it was clear that Army moved first. The ref whistled, pointed Cornell's way, and then changed his mind and pointed the other way. They also let a lot of chippy stuff go, which lead it to get pretty rough, and caused some pushing and shoving late in the game.
