The local CBS news station in the SF bay Area did a fun little piece on the matchup off the court. Stanford won based on USA Today Stats and interviews with Stanford students (e.g. I heard that Cornell is kind of a overacheiving sort of depressing kind of school).

But fortunately they interviewed Stanford Assoc. Vice Provost Rana Glasgal who is a Cornell grad (and of course active NorCal alum organizer and die hard hockey fan) who put things in the right perspective.

The smartest is if you combine Cornell and Stanford. Those people would be Gods among men!

Ms. Glasgal's point was that Cornell athletes have the edge academically because CU doesn't award athletic scholarships (and thereby maintains certain standards for admission).

This however, doesn't address the point of the story; to find out which institution, in general, is smarter.

Luckily, this omission can reflect poorly on both schools in question.

Now I know how old you are, Greg. You're right: older than I thought. ;-)

I'm not sure what Stanford's practices are, but theoretically, is awarding athletic scholarships mutually exclusive with maintaining standards for admission?

One's mission in life is to make enough wealth that you can return the blessings of education manyfold to your university. On that measure, Stanford is without peer, having ~ $2 million per student in endowment where we have $400,000 or so and No. 2 Princeton has $1.6 million.

Allowing for a 5% investment return, Stanford could pay each student's tutition, room, and board twice over and not go into the principle.
