...is being offered for sale by a memorabilia company. Wells sold it after falling on hard times that coincided with a spinal cord disease that has left him bedridden: [www.bostonherald.com]. Effing tragic.

I think we should mobilize and come up with like $175,000-200,000, buy the medal, loan it to Wells for the rest of his life, and then I get to keep the medal because I came up with this brilliant idea. I mean, sure, it's not CORNELL-related, but please don't lie to me and say you wouldn't totally geek out over a Miracle On Ice-related gold medal ("-related" added to indicate that I know the gold medal game involved defeating the Fin(n?)s, not the USSR).

Of course, if we do have a wonderful, generous, charming, and handsome major donor come forward, I guess one could make the argument that said major donor should get to maintain ownership of the medal. In that case, I propose that supporting donors are allowed to come touch and pet the medal whenever they want, and even wear it and stare proudly in the mirror while the national anthem plays.

I mean, jeez, just the fact that I came out of the woodwork to post this should count for something! Let's make it rain!!!!!

The headline is a clever play on words, not a typo, right? It is the Boston Herald.

But do you know that there was no "gold medal game" and the medal round was actually round-robin (which is how the Soviets ended up with the silver)? :-}

Ken Dryden backstops 29-0 season.
USA beats Russia in gold medal game.
Bill Buckner flubs grounder in game 7 against Mets.

I don't think I've met anybody that doesn't know the last one was Game Six. "Game Six" is a proper noun. What does get missed is that Schiraldi had already blown the lead when Mookie came up. The game was tied.

As celebrated as Carlton Fisk's 1975 HR is, you'd think Boston won that year.

The tying run scored on Bob Stanley's wild pitch while Mookie was at the plate.

True. I hearby change it to "when Mookie dribbled it to Buckner." But it was still mostly Schiraldi's fault.

If pedantry costs $100, I don't know how most of the people on this forum have any money at all. :-}

We just pay it to each other, you see. All that pedantry just incrases the velocity of money and stimulates the economy!

I was going to make a joke about throwing some coins out to window to increase their velocity and thereby stimulate the economy, but then I realized it would be awful.

But would they split your head open if dropped from the Empire State Building?

I did not! And for that, JTW gets his $100 refunded, less the service charge.

But, for some pedantry of my own, I'm pretty sure Olympic medals, like Oscars, can not be sold. They are technically owned by the issuing organization in order to preclude a memorabilia aftermarket. Not sure if it is ever enforced, though, and I'm never going to give up my Oscar for Best Film Editing 1983. It isn't my fault Tom Rolf can't play poker.

The IOC may claim this. But a google search shows plenty of stories about athletes selling medals. So I'd bet it's pretty much unenforceable.
