[Wrestling] Cornell sorta wins EIWA Championships

As I type this, day 2 is underway, so this isn't up-to-date, but after one day of competition, Cornell is in first place in the team competition and all of it's wrestlers are still alive for NCAA qualification.

In 8 weight classes, Cornell has placed a wrestler in the semifinals. In the remaining 2 (141 (Frey) and Hwt (Jochym)) the Cornellian is still alive in the consolation round.

Semifinal UPDATE:
Rodriguez was pinned at 125 and goes to consy.
Grey lost 5-4 at 133 including giving up a frustrating 1:01 in RT FTL.
Frey WBF in his consy in 141.
Meagher lost an MD to the #1 wrestler in his class at 149.
Leen WBF at 157. On to the NCAAs! CONGRATULATIONS, JORDAN!
Lewnes advances at 165. On to the NCAAs! CONGRATULATIONS, MACK!
Anceravage advances at 174. On to the NCAAs! CONGRATULATIONS, STEVE!
Arnone injury default at 184. Don't know if he'll be able to keep going.
Kerber loses in OT at 197.
Jochym gets a MD in consy.

Penn is having a great day and it may be very close for the team title - in fact Penn is slightly ahead after the semis.

More Consy:

Rodriguez WBF in his match to make the consy final at 125. On to the NCAAs! CONGRATULATIONS, MIKE! If anything good came out of the injury to Troy Nickerson, it is that Mike Rodriguez, an obviously talented wrestler, got to have a great senior year on the mat that otherwise would have been spent on the sidelines cheering for Troy.

At last update, Grey wins his consy match at 133 and is into the consy finals! On to the NCAAs! CONGRATULATIONS, MIKE!

Frey wins at 141 over the #2 seed and is into the consy finals! On to the NCAAs! CONGRATULATIONS, ADAM!

Meagher loses at 149. Good run DJ. You've got a good career ahead of you.

Arnone was done after his injury in the semis and forfeits. It was a shoulder injury, and hopefully it isn't going to require another surgery.

Kerber loses at 197. His run at 197 was incredibly impressive when you consider that he started the year wrestling at 184 and 174, but took over 197 to fill a weak spot in the lineup when Arnone came back at 184 and both won the Ivy League title and qualified for EIWA.

Jochym loses at Hwt. Tough loss for the frosh, but he has been very impressive.

Cornell's performance in the consolation rounds gives them a slight lead over Penn. Penn has five finalists; I don't know if they have anybody left in the consy bracket. Cornell has three finalists plus three more wrestling for third.

3rd/5th place matches:

125: Rodriguez wins! He takes third place for Cornell and the Big Red keep scoring in the consolation bracket.

133: Grey wins! He takes third place for Cornell and the Big Red keep scoring in the consolation bracket.

141: Frey wins by forfeit and takes third place for Cornell. More bonus points in the consy bracket, and even better, they came at the expense of Penn!

149: Meagher loses and finishes in 6th.

184: Arnone will almost certainly forfeit and take 6th. Confirmed. 6th place.

197: Kerber wins, gets 5th place. Fingers crossed for a wildcard. Nope. Pity, because his effort to move up to 197 was amazing. He is the second alternate, if qualified wrestlers (from any school) get hurt in training.

Hwt: Jochym loses in OT and finishes in 6th.

After the completion of the consolation rounds, Cornell has a 4.5 point lead over Penn. Cornell has three matches to go, Penn has 5.

Finals:

125: Penn wins the division but doesn't get any bonus points in the final match.
141: Penn loses in the final.
149: Penn with a big upset win in the final.
157: Leen upset in the finals.
165: Lewnes with a tense SV win over Penn to take the title!
174: Ugh. Anceravage loses in SV.
184: Penn with another upset win.

There seems to be disagreement about the scoring of these final matches. If a win is worth 3 (1 for bracket win, 2 for place), Penn is the champ. If a win is worth 2 (points only for place), Cornell is the champ. Either way, with Penn taking three titles to Cornell's one - and a medical forfeit by the favored Jantzen in the third place match against Frey for two necessary bonus points - the day belongs to the Quakers.

But whatever ... it is now official CORNELL IS THE EIWA CHAMPION!!! barely

Strangely, even though we won the conference title, this was a disappointing tournament by the Big Red. We qualified at least 6 for nationals but took only one title despite having 4 #1-seeded wrestlers. The team has some work to do...

Final places:
125: Mike Rodriguez - 3d place (NCAA qualifier)
133: Mike Grey - 3d place (NCAA qualifier)
141: Adam Frey - 3d place (NCAA qualifier)
149: DJ Meagher - 6th place
157: Jordan Leen - 2d place (NCAA qualifier)
165: Mack Lewnes - 1st place (NCAA qualifier)
174: Steve Anceravage - 2d place (NCAA qualifier)
184: Josh Arnone - 6th place
197: Justin Kerber - 5th place (NCAA 2d alternate)
Hwt: Macej Jochym - 6th place

Top four in each weight class qualify for NCAAs, plus seven wildcards spread over the ten weight classes. So the 5th-place matches do matter.
