New Jersey Star Ledger's Bracket Boy on the Cornell-Kentucky matchup. Catty (in the Big Red's favor) doesn't begin to describe it:

Bracket Boy
Kentucky once famously sent a recruit an envelope filled with money through the mail. Cornell knows that stocks, even in a down market, are a better long-term investment.

Kentucky coach John Calipari’s previous two Final Four appearances were vacated by the NCAA. Cornell knows that V-A-C-A-T-E-D, when played on a triple-word score in Scrabble, is worth 89 points.

The Kentucky fight song: “On, On, U of K.” The Cornell fight song: “That’s all right, that’s okay, you’ll be working for us someday.”

Cornell has a judge on the Supreme Court — Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a 1954 graduate. Kentucky athletes sometimes appear before judges.

Superman (Christopher Reeve, not BB as shown here [image below FYI]) and the Wizard of Oz (Frank Morgan) attended Cornell. Kentucky boasts Ashley Judd, who must’ve had a memorable role in something, but we just can’t think of it right now.

Cornell has one of its players, senior Jon Jaques, blogging this season for the New York Times. Kentucky once sparked the following headline in the satirical newspaper the Onion: “Kentucky Violated NCAA Rules While Recruiting Basketball-Playing Dog.”

Cornell recently had former player Graham Dow earn first-team Academic All-America honors after he posted a 3.99 grade-point average with a major in ecology and evolutionary biology. Kentucky’s campus is 85 miles from Petersburg, Ky., home of the Creation Museum, which flatly rejects most of the tenets of evolution.

Star-Ledger writer Brendan Prunty also reseeded the tournament's remaining sixteen teams based on their abilities. We're #4 and get to play #1 [www.nj.com]:

1. Kentucky
2. Syracuse
3. Kansas State
4. Cornell
5. Duke

Thanks, I loved it, especially the last one. Priceless.

Cornell knows that you can't get 89 points on a triple word-score since 89 is not a multiple of 3 (unless I'm missing something here).

Great point.

it would depend on where you lay the letters down on a triple word (double or triple letter points) and what tiles were used next to it. One would need to turn that 13 into at most a 29 and then lay it next to a letter that extends that letter into a 2 point word ("at" for example).

Back to basketball discussion...

Vacated = 7 letters.

13 points x triple word score = 39.

39 + 50 points for a Bingo since it is 7 letters = 89.

Voila.

Man, if Scrabble prowess is the mark of a good Cornellian, I need to return my degree.

I do know that it's spelled voilà.

To even further out-Cornell this, for VACATED on a TWS to be worth only 13x3, the TWS would have to be perfectly centered, otherwise one of the tiles would fall on a DLS. Furthermore, the turn (if not the word) would be worth more than 89 points because if you get the bingo bonus and all 7 tiles from the players rack are used, it would have to be hooked on another word, which at the very least doubles the value of one of the letters.

Actually I should have known that for specifically Cornell reasons, one of my roommates was into Scrabble and would play a competitive online version and actually traveled to Connecticut for some regional tournament.
