UNC 12 Cor 7 Glynn (U) plus penalty after the goal
UNC 13 Cor 7 MP Burns open net 3:01 left
UNC 13 Cor 8 Doctor triple man up :11 left

Pregame: 26 degrees in Ithaca, about 60 in Chapel Hill. UNC students in the stands at the game in shirt sleeves. Sheesh, how did I forget this basic fact when applying to college?

Didn't hear much sound when the band played "rocket's red glare ..." Maybe not many people drove down overnight after the Harvard game?

Awesome video feed. How come the Ivy League can't do this? [edit add:] widescreen video. Cool. And what's this thing - when a goal is scored, you can see it a second time. What's the technical term for that? "Instant replay?" Wonder if Cornell video knows this term.

[add] Attendance announced as a old-Lynah-like 3866.

[add] Game stats you might not believe from watching the game:

Shots, Cornell 51-34 (a bit hard to believe the margin given the outcome)
Saves, UNC Grant Zimmerman 15 (believable, and amazing)
Saves, Cornell Jake Myers 6 (12 GA in 51 minutes, plus Mat Martinez 1S, 1GA in 9 minutes relief) (believable - we didn't stop a lot)
Faceoffs, Cornell 13x24 (unbelievable if you watched the first half)

Could hear a lot of cheering for the red during warmups too. I'm guessing its mostly the parents and they don't usually do the RED during the anthem.

1-0 UNC on a sloppy turnover on a clear. I don't think they really got settled on the D after that even though they had some time.

Stupid shot by Calvert.

They are likely to kill us on face-offs. Have to do something intelligent with each possession.

Chris Finn puts it away on a transition play with some good defense to force the turnover.

Wow. Meyers is not playing well, the defense is not playing well, and we can't get the ball on offense b/c we can't win a faceoff.

I think Tambroni's gotta put Seibald in on face-offs. If nothing else, he can knock the little UNC shit on his ass. Trailing by four and not able to win a face-off is about the worst possible scenario.

UNC was up 6-1 or 7-1 on Duke in the NCAA quarters last year and still lost big. But we do have to get the ball.

Not as dire as it looked after the first quarter. Still wish we were doing better on faceoffs. And converting a couple more of those second quarter shots that just missed.

On offense too much 1 on 1. Need to move the ball crisper for higher percentage shots by guys cutting off-ball. This team is much better than this.

Well I think he was likely ducking b/c he was screening Meyers, but yeah it would've been nice if he just jumped up and tried to block it. His duck was too late for Meyers to really pick it up.

We're showing flashes of last year's passing but we're just not crisp yet. The postponement of Tuesday's Binghamton game really hurt in terms of sharpening the offense.

In that position, you step up and block. If you want to clear the view you move sideways. That was a clear duck and if Coach Georgalas doesn't talk to him about it, I'll by you dinner at the restaurant of your choice. In Ithaca of course (cause your web address looks like Cakifornia**])

Either that, or the guys are so used to playing on turf they aren't compeensating for the difference in traction.

One of last year's strengths was Cornell's shooting. This year we can't seem to put shots on net. When Glynn made it 7-5 five seconds into the second half, I thought we might be able to get back into it, but sadly not.

This loss really hurts. If an undefeated season with a win over the top-seed only gets a #4 seed--and even that required bending the criteria by the committee, according to its chairman--we may have to win out to get a top eight seed this year.

It's a long season Al. If UNC turns into a top 2-3 team, this loss won't look so bad, as long as the team improves and plays a lot better than today.

Goaltending was the most obvious problem, but the shooting was also disappointing, and as I previously said, there wasn't enough offensive movement to create high percentage shots. I would hav liked to see the Canadian kids Gamble orThomson get an opportunity. Thomson has size at 6-2 and 185 and (I assume) the Canadian box techniques to get open and shoot quickly from inside. The other Cocoziello is another big attackmanwho might have helped us get inside more.

Siebald is also gonna have to step up his game if he wants to be a Tewaarton candidate.

Seibald is odds-on favorite for the Tewaarton if it's given for minutes on the field.

I also wish the name was easier to spell. I have to stop and think if it's SEI or SIE. Maybe Age should put Max Seibald on spelling list in the lower right corner.

Cornell has a long history of losing early games and finishing strong. In theory that should be less an issue with indoor practice facilities.

Perhaps, but the criteria for selection and seeding is the criteria, and our schedule is no stronger this season than it was last (UNC replaces Duke, Navy in for Notre Dame, and add Denver and Canisius). I expect this team to improve and play better than today--if someone can play goal; upperdeck's observation above is accurate--but when they crunch the numbers at year end, we'll get screwed again. In 2005, with three losses, they sent us to play at Towson. We may get away with one more loss, but anything more and we're on the road, I think.

Lastly, I'd be amazed if UNC winds up in the top four.

Interesting that Glynn beat their hot-shot face-off guy on 11 of 15 once Tambroni put him into the X.

Yeah, you got a good point - at this point hard to see them above JHU, Duke, UVa and SU. Still, if we win out other than SU, we should be in good shape. DFon't forget, we have a quality win (so far) against Navy, and they will probably in turn get somwe quality wins which help us. Gotta have the Army game next weekend, though.

It's a quality win so long as Navy stays a quality team. Hockey has beaten teams that were quality early in the season but not come tourney time. Just our luck and all the good players ship out early to the Gulf, er, conflict.
