Final, Cornell 14, Yale 12, with Yale flubbing a pass for a 2-point conversion with :00 left. The beginning and end was exciting. In between, this was not must-see football unless you're the parents of the Cornell defensive players. Cornell's defense looks real: an end zone interception, a pick for a TD, a near fumble recovery on a punt. The only dumb play was a head slap to the Yale QB that nullified another interception. Too bad the Cornell D allowed a TD on the last play of regulation.

Actually, the scoreboard said the final play was with :29 left. The scoreboard time was so messed up for the last two minutes, the officials finally kept time on the field. I'm sure it's visitor bias, but we believe we saw a Yale running play that took two seconds-only off the clock near the end. Maybe more than once.

It couldn't have been a nicer day for football with sunny skies and temperatures in the low to mid sixties and Yale's huge grassy field (Lot D) proving an incredible amount of tailgating space. Even with Yale's endowment off by more billions than Cornell's endowment is, total, they still don't charge for parking.

The offense, it appears, is going to have to find and build skills as it goes along this year. Right now the running and passing games appear to be on par.

Yale now has a week to think on this: How is it possible to outgain Cornell in total yardage by almost 2-1 and beat us on first downs 15-3 ... and still lose?

I have the same thought as two years ago in Yale Bowl: With 64,246 seats and only 17,000 in attendance (a lot of them youth groups who got in free), this is a reminder of how grand Ivy League football used to be long ago. The place got what I thought was a major rehab in the last decade, but the upper seats (probably two thirds of YB capacity) have faded seats with cracked paint chips you through your jeans, and some rotted seat backs.

The Cornell band rocks. The Yale band is what it's always been. Sophomoric does not begin to describe their halftime show. Literary allusion was not my strong suit as an undergrad, but I do recall that subtle is not a bad thing. The Yale bugle players saluted American politicians including SC Gov. Sanford and his "summer vacation ... exploring twin peaks ... and lush valleys." I was waiting for him to add, "Lush valleys - get it?" The band also had an announcer imitating Kanye West and the voice was very, ah, black. I wonder if they'll get feedback on that. [edit add: You want comparatively subtle - The Harvard band years ago saluted Harvard's own politician alumni, announced a song salute to Sen. Ted Kennedy, and played (but did not announce the song title) "How Deep Is Your Love.";)

But it was still great to be there. Would have been nicer if one more Cornellian put in an appearance: the Big Red Bear. Plus, unlike Versus viewers, we got to see the ending live.
