Football at Yale

Tough first half, down 16-zip. No offense, except for a great last drive down to the Yale 20 which ended in a sack and an incompletion.

51-12 final. Damn Elis living up to the hype.

Cornell looked bad, awful, and horrendous on all teams. The best play of the day was when Siwula Kilcoyne fumbled, Ford picked it up and threw down field to his man who caught the ball and tripped on the 2. Unfortunately, you can't advance a fumble like that and it didn't count...

I thought the best play was when Ford had to leave the game because of a temporary injury, the backup QB comes in and first pass throws a TD. I was there, and it was an ugly, ugly game. Rough.

Well that touchdown was bogus. Our wideout was throwing a stiff arm the whole way in the endzone. It should have come back.

The stupidest decision was probably when Yale kicked off out of bounds and we made them rekick instead of just taking the ball at the 35. It's not like our return game was working...

The game could have been worse too. Yale shot themselves in the foot with dumb penalties that led to field goals instead of TDs early.

Losing 51-12 to Yale wasn't all bad. The mid-70s weather was gorgeous, the rain that was part of the partly cloudy forceast was more like a cooling mist, and even with 15,000 in attendance, and it was easy to find great seats in a nicely renovated Yale Bowl.

For one shining moment in the third when we scored and got it down to 16-6, it seemed like going for 2 points might make it possible to catch up to Yale. That just annoyed Yale and they ran off two more touchdowns to get it to 30-6, at which point Cornell QB Nathan Ford on a nice scramble got somersaulted by the Yale D, hurt his right ankle (maybe it was his left knee and they just taped the right foot as a personal privacy measure to fool everyone in the stands), at which point backup Ben Ganter comes in and throws his first pass for a touchdown, but by that time it was clear no miracle was in the offing.

Mike McLeod, Yale RB, looked awesome in running 31 times for 151 yards, but just about anybody could have picked up 75 behind Yale's line. If McLeod needed a three-foot-wide opening, Yale got him six.

Penalties hurt us, as did fumbles. Ford look pretty good at QB except for one thing: On third and six, he'd throw a sideline pass to a receiver four not eight yards downfield and it was up the receiver to make the final two. Which he didn't. Also, not that I could throw better, but some of his passes seemed to float more than sail, giving Yale enough time to intercept or (4? 5? 6? times) almost intercept.

Cornell had an awesome unintentional trick play called back. Siwula (?) [edit: it may have been Shane Kilcoyne] dashed into the line at midfield on third or fourth down, the ball popped loose, Ford snatched it up, and lofted a pass that was hauled in at the 10. Except the referee ruled Ford's hand touched the ground as he picked up the ball, grounding it there. It was such a pretty play, it deserved not to have been called back. Plus even then I think the refs could have suspected it wouldn't have made a difference in the final outcome. Yale was that good.
