Love it, but can we get some acronym definition? Based on the other thread, I'm assuming:
WBF = Win By Fall
LBF = Loss By Fall

TK? X?

TK? X?

X seemed to indicate that the wrestler will not be partaking in that round because he has already been eliminated (in the main draw) or has yet to relegated to the wrestlebacks. TK is likely the ironic journalistic abbreviation of "To Come."

WBF and LBF are correct.
"TK" is editorial shorthand for "to come"
X means they lost in the previous round and nothing else is coming.
- means that the wrestler is still in the championship bracket.

Let's hope for more dashes and fewer x's.

Leen advances in round 2, 4-3. Hooker beaten and on to wrestlebacks.

Yikes! In his first match, Arnone beats the #3 seed with a takedown in the final seconds, 3-1. Arnone now gets #6 Jake Varner of Iowa State.

Rinaldi moves on with a 4-1 win over Herbst of Wisconsin. Good news is that #1 seed Max Askren is beaten in his first wrestleback match and is now out of the tournament, so, if Rinaldi loses the QFs to Davis, he will not be greeted by Askren in the wrestlebacks. Although, given Max's performance, maybe that's too bad.

Four still in the championship bracket: Nick, Leen, Arnone, Rinaldi.

Frey advances in wrestleback round 1 nipping Ruggirello of Hofstra, 3-2. Frey will get #8 McCormick of Missouri in next wrestleback.

Penn's Eveleth, who upset Nickerson in the EIWA finals, goes two and out at the NCAAs. Penn's Matt Dragon also two and out.

Anceravage puts Old Dominion's Pullano right to his back and gets the fall with a headlock in his first wrestleback.

Looks like Hooker will get #8 Stolpinski of Navy, who was upset in round 1, in his first wrestleback.

Hammond apparently lost his wrestleback. Intermat shows the score as 34(!)-0 but I think that's a mistake and should be 4-0. Guess his torn MCL was bothering him.

Sorry, I had to copy this over from the other thread (from KenP) so I'm not switching back and forth. Names are fine, but personally, I can't remember where they all stand.

125: 4) Troy Nickerson-Cornell-So (EIWA - 2nd)
133: 3) Adam Frey-Cornell-Fr (EIWA - 2nd)
149: 2) Jordan Leen-Cornell-So (EIWA - 1st)
165: 8) Steve Anceravage-Cornell-So (EIWA - 1st)
174: 16) Joey Hooker-Cornell-Sr (EIWA - 4th)
184: 14) Josh Arnone-Cornell-So (EIWA - 3rd)
197: 5) Jerry Rinaldi-Cornell-Sr (EIWA - 2nd)
HWY: 23) Zach Hammond-Cornell-Jr (EIWA - 2nd)

Those are not seeds, however, but the projections/educated guesses of the website KenP pulled that from. The seeded wrestlers for Cornell are Nickerson (2), Frey (3), Leen (4), Anceravage (8) and Rinaldi (5).

Kind of a funny match. No points in the first. Nickerson held his opponent down the entire second and escaped in the third. So the final score was all about riding, not stand-up wrestling. In theory, Nickerson catches a break as the 6 seed upset the 3 in the QF and will face Nickerson in the semis. Not a good tournament for 3 seeds, as far as I can tell.

141 was weak for us this year. I could see that. I could also see him staying at 133 unless Troy is outgrowing 125.

I believe the reason Frey was always so out of gas was the drastic weight-cutting he had to do. Not sure why they didn't have him at 141 this year. With another year of maturing of his bod, 141 might be a tough cut for him next year. Plus they have this hot-shot 133 pounder who supposedly is coming next year after backing out of his commitment to Lehigh this past August. Hard to say what next year will bring. You're right: Troy might be a tough fit for 125 next year, a la Travis Lee moving up to 133.

It's over. Leen with an early takedown but two Gillespie reversals knock him out.

Now it's up to Arnone and Rinaldi--both with tough matchups.

Seriously. AFAIK, Rinaldi has never beaten Davis and Arnone's opponent hasn't given up a point in his first 2 matches.

Leen's next match is going to be tough whoever it is. The 2, 7 and 9 seeds are among the 4 wrestlers vying to take a shot at him. He needs to win that match to make All-American.

Edit: It will be either the 2 or the 7. The 2 took on an unseeded wrestler in a crazy multiple OT match that was mostly riding-without-escaping until the 4th SV round when the 2 not only got a takedown, he got back points - the final was 6-1.

And Davis again beats Rinaldi 6-2.

Only Nickerson gets to the semis.

Dunno. Match appeared to slip under the radar.

Stolpinski takes down Hooker in the first. Stolpinski escapes in the 2nd. Rides Hooker out in the 3rd. 4-0 score. Depressing not to score anything.

Anceravage advances 4-2 over Rendos in the wrestlebacks.

Frey, Hooker, and Hammond now out. Leen, Anceravage, Arnone, and Rinaldi in wrestlebacks. Nickerson in semis. Not a good day.

Very disappointing for a team this deep but a good run in the wrestlebacks could redeem the morning.

Nickerson is clicking along as usual.
Frey is the only real disappointment so far. Not making weight is such a horrible way to go out. (Sweating it off would be worse.)
Leen is mildly disappointing, but when 4 loses to 5, it isn't a huge upset.
Anceravage looks to be in good position to justify his seed.
Arnone is ahead of expectations.
Rinaldi lost to the guy who always beats him.

Hooker and Hammond weren't supposed to be anywhere other than watching the medal rounds, so I suppose I can't be too upset about their finishes.

So, explain to me...

the wrestlebacks are basically a 'losers bracket', right? In playground (and un-PC) terminology? Does it give them any individual recognition? Does it just help out any team score?

The format is double-elimination. Losing in the main bracket means that you can't win the whole thing but can still come back as high as third place, even if you lose in the first round of the main bracket. Dustin Manotti did this last year for the Big Red.

Winning in the wrestlebacks accumulates team points and decides places 3 - 8 for individuals. Top 8 in each weight are All-American.

It appears to have stopped updating at 5-3 in the 2d. (Though I think it should be 4-2 going to the third with Anceravage expected to elect down.) EDIT: Now showing a 5-3 loss as the final.

Final 5-3 Miller per the summary page.:`-(

I think Arnone gets Bennett of Indiana in his first wrestleback and Rinaldi gets Hudson Taylor of Maryland. Neither are ranked.

I think [at 184] Arnone gets Bennett of Indiana in his first wrestleback and [at 197] Rinaldi gets Hudson Taylor of Maryland. Neither are ranked.

A quick google shows that Bennett got a wildcard after finishing 8th(!) in the Big 10 and Taylor (a frosh) got a wildcard after finishing 2d in the ACC.

The other remaining matches (so that people don't have to search), Nickerson faces the 6 seed in the 125 SF and Leen faces the 7 seed in the 149 consy QF.

After Session III, Cornell has fallen out of the top 10:

Team Standings (Semifinalists/consolation)
1. Minnesota, 66.0 (4/3)
2. Iowa State, 62.5 (4/3)
3. Oklahoma State, 48.5 (4/1)
4. Missouri, 44.5 (1/3)
5. Hofstra, 41.0 (3/2)
6. Penn State, 39.5 (2/2)
7. Iowa, 37.0 (2/1)
8. Northwestern, 34.5 (2/2)
9. Wisconsin, 31.5 (1/3)
10. Michigan, 29.0 (2/3)

14. Cornell 20.5 25.5* (1/3)

* I think. Check my math. Don't bother. The NCAA posted the Session III standings. I have no idea how to get to this number.

For some reason the main bracket of 125 (the most important bracket of the tournament, IMHO) isn't showing up.

Good luck to Troy Jroy, Jordan, Josh and Jerry.

I'm going to be out during the evening session but I'll update the scoreboard up top when I get home. Let's Go Red!

They're showing both 125 semis simultaneously split screen. Commentary is the other one, but both are available. No score yet in either match.

Edit: Nickerson leads 1-0 after 2 periods, due to an escape.

Bizarre match. Second in a row for Nickerson without a single takedown. It didn't look like he tried anything offensively in this match--or the last, for that matter. All very strange.

Leen advances in the wrestlebacks to make All-American.

Arnone match just starting. And Arnone finishes it 1:24 later with a fall. A third All-American.

Rinaldi up next. Person describing the match for Intermat says "the pace is very slow." Rinaldi's takedown and reversal beat Taylor's three escapes, 4-3. A fourth All-American.

Cornell had five wrestlers seeded eighth or higher--the All-American level. Of these, Frey and Anceravage did not get there. Nickerson, Leen, and Rinaldi did, along with the unseeded Arnone. Still to come: the consolation matches for placement at 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th.

Rinaldi to face unseeded Nick Roy of Michigan. Arnone gets #7 Alex Clemsen of Edinboro. Leen draws unseeded Tyler Turner of Wisconsin. Nickerson faces either #5 Charlie Falck of Iowa or #9 Obe Blanc of Lock Haven, and will finish at worst sixth. [Edit: Blanc beats Falck 6-5 so Nick gets him next.]

Leen loses to Turner, 6-5, on a late penalty point (stalling?) and exactly one minute of riding time. Will wrestle for 7th place against Harvard's J.P. O'Connor. That's two matches (Nick's semifinal) lost to penalty points.

Arnone beaten by Clemsen, 3-2, and will wrestle for 7th.

Intermat summary shows Rinaldi beating Roy 2-0 but the narrative detail ends in the 2nd period. I was fooled earlier when it showed Leen's match with Turner as over with the score 5-4 Leen, but then further detail gave the match to Turner 6-5. So I'm not sure about this one. If Rinaldi did win, he will get #11 Chris Weidman of Hofstra, who was beaten by Josh Glenn of American in the semifinals--and will be assured at least a sixth place finish.

You know that your program has joined the elite when 12th place with 4 All-Americans is a disappointment. It is, however, an objectively impressive achievement and I congratulate Rob Koll and his staff for their success and thank them for their effort.

Still, Josh Arnone is the only wrestler on the team that surpassed his seeding in the tournament. Leen and Anceravage, both seeded, failed to make the medal round. Nickerson lost in the semifinals because he didn't attack an inferior wrestler and got nailed for stalling; Leen dropped his last two matches to unseeded wrestlers - the first of those by another stalling penalty; Rinaldi lost to the 11 seed from Hofstra (who he beat earlier in the year) and never could beat his nemesis, Penn State's Davis, losing to him in both the QF and the 5th place match.

That said, the only elite wrestler the program is losing to graduation is Rinaldi. Hogle lost his starting spot at 184 to Arnone and Hooker, while a fine wrestler, was not among the nation's elite. The rest of the seniors were backing up the underclassmen and rarely saw action.

The team returns three All-Americans (Nickerson, Leen, Arnone), two more who will be in line for A-A (Frey, Anceravage), brings in at least one top flight frosh and hopefully will see improvement from Manson and at heavyweight. This program remains strong and Coach Koll should be commended for what he has built.

My one complaint the whole time I've watched Cornell wrestling is that they are way too willing to take a stall call. When I wrestled my coach would kill us after a match if we gave up a point for stalling. Theres no reason an elite wrestler should not be capable of being aggressive in a match. Maybe this post-season will help coach Koll to start remedying this problem. That being said, Cornell has an amazing wrestling program and I congratulate coach Koll on getting them this far.
