Alex Karowski ‘12, who is seeking to appear in his third consecutive Olympics this summer (men's eight in 2016, alternate in 2020), will be rowing with Tyler Nase, Henry E. Bartels '48 Head Coach of Cornell Men's Lightweight Rowing, in the men's pair, one of six entries in the event.

They will be competing in the US Olympic Trials. I believe these events are being held in Sarasota, from April 4-7.

This from Tyler Nase — “The team scrimmaged against the Heavies this past Saturday. We raced 2*2k with each boat lining up against their heavyweight counterpart. Overall, the team performed well. The Varsity and JV won both pieces and the 3V and 4V won the first but lost the second. The Heavyweights always prove to be great sparring partners and I am excited for us to line up with them as the season progresses. The whole boathouse is putting in good work.”

In part because how do you close a lake, or 2000 meters of a riverbank? Although the various Olympic committees were always gold-medal caliber in the chutzpah department.cu155

It’s a manmade lake, but you are correct, most of the 2000 meter length is available free to spectators (and an occasional alligator). There are, however, grandstands at the finish, where there’s also a Jumbotron, and they did charge for the World Championships in 2017. They also charge for parking.

Right. You want to be an informed spectator, you should be willing to pay for it. So, paying for a seat in the stands and a jumbotron, and somebody to explain which boat is which, that has value. Or does the announcer intersperse race news with shoutouts to Merrill Lynch and Boeing Aerospace Systems and other valued sponsors?
