Quint Kessinich has us at No. 7, Stony Brook at No. 14, and says of Cornell: "The Big Red bounced back from their Virginia loss with an excellent Ivy League win at Yale. Cornell travels to Stony Brook on Tuesday in a huge game. Tewaaraton nominee Rob Pannell already has 32 points, but Cornell has been outscored 33-24 in the second half." Of Stony Brook: "The Seawolves were upset by Towson on March 19. Kevin Crowley is netting 4.4 points per game, but the complementary parts aren't clicking. An at-large bid hinges on a Cornell win." Thanks for putting the pressure on, Quint. [edit add: The Quint comment on the at-large bid is about SB's chances of a bid. It's the paragraph about Stony Brook being ranked No. 14.]

This, of course, is nonsense on Quint's part. Last year Cornell lost two Ivy games (one of those to Dartmouth), to Syracuse, to Virginia, and to Princeton in the Ivy tournament and still received a #7 seed. A loss to Stony Brook would certainly hurt, but I don't think it's make or break.

Seriously. This is lacrosse. It's not who you beat but who you schedule. rolleyes
I also can't 100% tell if he means an at large for SBU or CU is riding on the game.

Pretty sure he's referring to Stony Brook's chance of an at-large bid. This is their only other high profile game (the other being an 8-7 loss to Virginia early in the year). Their schedule is very underwhelming from here on out.

You are not giving him much credit for writing clearly. Why would he say "a Cornell win" to refer to "a win over Cornell"? And does Stony Brook have even the slightest chance at an at-large bid even if they beat Cornell?

Thanks for putting the pressure on, Quint.

I agree it's poorly written, but I have little doubt that he's referring to Stony Brook's chances for an at-large bid, not Cornell's

Princeton at 1-4 is down to being an also-mentioned after an 8-3 loss at Penn, its first in 22 P vs. P games. Inside Lacrosse/Nike poll has us at No. 7, tomorrow's opponent, Stony Brook, at No. 10.

The bigger oddity in the polls is Princeton's fall from 7 to 11 to also-got-votes in the first 3 March polls. I think they won't stay that low for long.

Their best player from last year, middie Mike Chanenchuk, Ivy rookie of the year, is out of school. He broke his collarbone in fall ball and withdrew for the year. (I hope he still finished fall semester. That's a lot of tuition money to toss away.) Princeton says he is working to rejoin the team (next season). He also deferred a year before entering Princeton because of a bad back.

Thomas Schreiber, the Inside Lacrosse #2 entering freshman (Chanenchuk's HS teammate), was reported banged up at Penn but did play. He could be the next Rob Pannell. Tyler Fiorito, the All-America goalie, played. It's hard to tell if the Tigers' injury list is worse than normal or just typical for lacrosse this year.

Meanwhile this is a crucial week for Cornell with Stony Brook tonight (on the Guyland) and Saturday hosting Penn (1 pm).

I was taught the Lawn part of Lawn Guyland was implied and never spoken. On was not a substitute for Lawn, but I see how it could grown on you. Driftng slightly, I believe the correct pronunciation still has an R at the end of Maria. Good Catholics would say, "Ave Mariar." Also while most living west of the Hudson would seek change for a quarter, in New York City and points east, you'd ask "change of a quarter." Or quartah, loaning the ending R to Maria. Fortunately we all pronounce Screw BU similarly and correctly.

The thought of calling any of this "better English" - mind-boggling.

Let's hope Quint is right on at least one thing. If you watched Dartmouth-North Carolina last night, late in the game he noted that Cornell was leading Stony Brook 17-8, and he liked Cornell for Championship Weekend.

For Cornell to get there on the field or to do a better job running hospitality and concessions?

Perhaps this is a form of woofing along the lines of a low-rent Sports Illustrated cover jinx.

Two thoughtful comments on Cornell from the fan/voters:
>>> Two good looking wins this week against a worse than expected Stony Brook and a better than expected Penn team. They are coming together as the weather heats up just like they did every season under Tambroni. (VTD)
>>> They do not have the range of weapons they have had in the recent past. (OCanada)

The latter comment is true, especially if "recent past" refers to the Siebald/Glynn era, but they are still averaging 12.5 goals per game against the sixth or eighth strongest schedule (depending upon which of laxpower's SOS metrics you choose).

I especially liked this comment in the review of Army:

Ranked above Cornell due to early season win but I do not think they could do it again if the game were played today.

But my biggest concern is (like last year) our inability to play well in the 3rd quarter. What is with this team?

I hope this is the right place for this question...some of my friends and I will be going to the game against Dartmouth this weekend. It'll be our first lacrosse game, so we'd like to know what the fan etiquette is, i.e. is the goalie a "sieve"? Is it all his fault when we score? Are there any lacrosse-specific chants, and is it OK if we come up with our own or bring some from other sports? Thanks.

My experience is that the cheering is not like Lynah. No chants other than "Let's Go Red!" Not even a "Red!" during the anthem. I tried a "sieve...It's all your fault!" cheer at Princeton last year. I got a few chuckles and a lot of dirty looks.

But...if you can get people to do it, go for it.

From my limited experience, lacrosse crowds, at least in the Ivies, are more family-oriented--both in the sense of appropriate behavior, and also in that more of the crowd is players' families. So I think the "support the participants in a positive manner" rule really does apply in lacrosse more than hockey.

That's a very good point. Lacrosse crowds usually have a lot of kids. You'll often see local clubs and kids' teams show up en masse. Keep it G-rated.

Absolutely true. The lacrosse world is small - players know each other well, may even play together on summer league teams. Their families similarly socialize and tailgate together. There's generally (but not always) a lot less edge to the game. You rarely see the kind of in-your-face stuff you see in hockey, even in the scrums on the crease. Lacrosse people enjoy the combat and the contact then party afterwards. Really a different culture altogether.

Sounds a lot like hockey culture at many places, actually. I'm always amazed how not only every player seems to know each other, but their parents and sisters and pets seem to know each other too. Very small world.

Pannell's 5.5 points per game lead the NCAA by a pretty fair margin over the second guy (Jeremy Boltus, Army, 4.89), and currently he's the only guy in the top 10 in both goals per game and assists per game. I think that's a pretty reasonable statement by Quint.

So I think the "support the participants in a positive manner" rule really does apply in lacrosse more than hockey.

That's a very good point. Lacrosse crowds usually have a lot of kids. You'll often see local clubs and kids' teams show up en masse. Keep it G-rated.
That seemed to have been the attitude at women's hockey until the later stages of this season. It didn't stop us from trying to create some atmosphere, but we'll see how things go on Saturday.

I'm not saying to avoid trying to create some atmosphere. I remember a lot more atmosphere at lacrosse games back "when I was a lad" so it was certainly done in the past. Just keep it clean.

I was pretty surprised by the extension of the typical crowd chants into the women's games at the end of the year. I guess it means the program has arrived and I can't really argue against it without implicitly invoking a gender double standard so...

meh, I still didn't like it.

I didn't mean to conflate swearing and atmosphere...at most it's going to be like the women's hockey playoff games. If not that, we'll try to befriend the refs (it works, we've tried), and find a song that we can fit Pannell's name into.

There was a chant that Hobart fans used to do whenever they had possession in our attacking zone, especially on the EMO. They'd all just go "goal time" over and over again in that sing song that people use to chant goalies' names. I found it intimidating in a snarky sort of way.

D- Pace of play - Soccer scores don't strengthen the game's argument as the fastest on two feet. Too much standing around, waiting for endless substitutions, coupled with conservative zone defenses, and cautious offensive schemes have left fans craving excitement. Sports fans who watch lacrosse wonder why the game doesn't have a shot clock. If the product isn't compelling, only the hardcore will watch.

F Attendance - Frozen fans, no marketing, and pace-less games equal empty seats at college lacrosse games in February and March.

Agree, if they don't put in a shot clock, it won't be worth watching anymore. They've tried everything else, remember 6 long sticks; it's time to do it, or we're looking at soccer with sticks.

I'd rather them fix the sticks before they put in a shot clock. If you get hit full force on your stick, the ball should come out. The pockets are too big. Everyone would love more ground balls and more fast breaks due to turnovers.

Fixing the sticks still won't speed up the game. It'll just mean the other team is slowing it down. If Hopkins doesn't want to fast break, they won't when they get the ball, regardless. If the game is to progress, shot clock and alternating possession.

Yale comes from behind to tie Penn in the last minute but Penn goes on to win in three OTs. At Penn. Yale lead 6-3 at the half but Penn scored three quick ones to open the second half to tie it. Sound familiar?

Too bad for our cause. Penn looks like the other league power this year and it would be nice for us to have Penn with two defeats in case we stumble somewhere between now and the Ivy playoffs, although if Cornell and Penn both finished with one league loss, the deciding factor for the home field for the playoffs is the head to head record?

The 13-12 win over Harvard moves us up one place to #5 behind Syracuse and Notre Dame (both unbeaten) followed by Hopkins, Maryland, Cornell and Denver all at 8-2. Talk about no respect: Princeton plays the Orange to a decent 7-5 loss and gets not even an also-mentioned vote. Army's season sort of deflated after beating us. The Cadets are 7-4 and yet to play the likes of Navy and Hopkins, plus the post-season that will likely include Afghanistan and Iraq. Good luck to them on the pro-after-graduation part.

I don't think we've clinched it yet. In theory, if we lose to both Brown and Princeton and one of those two runs the table, then that team would have the tie-breaker with us. Not sure how 3-way ties would work - possibly a coin flip.

We'd lose a three-way tie with Brown and Princeton (we'd be 0-2; Princeton wins based on its victory over Brown). If we finish tied with Princeton and say, Yale, then those three would have all gone 1-1 against each other.

This article from Princeton athletics from last year seems to indicate that if head-to-head fails to resolve, the next step is to compare results against each team not involved in the tie, starting with the highest placed.

Given that Brown is 4-6 and Princeton is 3-6, I sincerely hope we win at least one of those games and prevent this from becoming a relevant issue. I'm going to go out on a limb and predict Princeton loses to Harvard next Saturday and gets put out of their misery (at least as far as an at-large bid is concerned) before they even come up to Schoellkopf.

I remain amazed that SOS is its own category in the NCAA criteria and is held in equal weight to RPI, which fifty percent SOS. Just make SOS 90% of RPI, slot JHU and the four ACC schools in for a first round home game each year, and be done with it...

How about we just win (at least) one of the two remaining games and make this a non-issue?

Also, I saw some #21 jerseys (current style) in the Cornell Store a few days ago. I know the history behind it, so it seemed slightly distasteful at best to put jerseys with that number out for sale. Can anyone shed some light onto why they're doing this?

I don't know the particulars, but if it was my son, I'd be very happy to see people wearing his jersey. What better way to carry on his memory, and think about going to a game and seeing multiple #21 jerseys. Would you be sad, sure, but proud at the same time. Considering how involved with the program the family still seems to be, it makes some sense.

Why distasteful? Maybe someone wants to wear the jersey to help remember George Boiardi and honor the player and the Cornell tradition. It's not as if the jersey comes with a lock of hair. Sometimes we fall into fall into a trap of trying to outdo one another in saying what's the one proper way to honor a dead person. Say a young man's widow and his parents didn't get along. She wants white at the service to remember youth; parents want black from tradition and want him buried in their family plot because 'you were only married such a short time, I'm sure you'll understand.' It becomes about control and figuring out indirect ways to say they can't stand each other. The deceased is just a way to carry on the feud.

In the case of George Boiardi, maybe someone says, "Don't sell the jersey of an athlete who died tragically." Someone else says, "Make the jerseys available to keep his memory alive." A third person says, "Sell the jerseys but only if the jersey company donates 10% of proceeds to charity."

When I see someone wearing a #10 lax jersey in the stands, it's touching that a Cornellian keeps alive the memory of the best and toughest athlete, pound for pound, who ever set foot on a Cornell athletic field in Eamon McEneaney. Actually I'm sure someone better will or has come along because athletic performances improve in every sport where you can measure with a stopwatch or tape measure. [drift] And we're likely to have the argument soon about who's the true points leader in Cornell lax history when Rob Pannell in four years outdoes the 296 points Mike French put up in three.

The part that bothered me most was that there was no explanation of whose jersey it was, and I suspect very few current students (and even fewer pre-frosh, who have been all around campus the last few weeks) have any idea about who George Boiardi was or what happened to him. I would be okay with it if they had attached a card that gave the history of that jersey number, and I'd probably buy one if some of the money goes to charity, but instead they were just put out with price tags and nothing else.

I definitely get your point - it does seem that the sale of a #21 jersey should get special treatment of some kind rather than just being stuck in a pile of other jerseys.

St. Johns is up 5-2 on Notre Dame at the half. There is a free webcast on Notre Dame all access at [www.und.com]

Also, Maryland-Hopkins is on ESPNU at 8.

I think depending on the results of these two games, we could be either number 1, 2, or 3 in next week's polls. That's just my guess though.

EDIT: Irish tie it at 6 with around 6 to go in the third.
Maryland up 2-0 just under 5 minutes into game.

Now tied at 7 after 3.
Maryland up 2-1 just under 4 to go in first.

The Irish finish with three straight on the road:
Providence
Syracuse
North Carolina

Depending on what happens in the ACC tourney, UNC could be in a must win situation against the Irish in the finale. The SU game will be for the Big East title in all likelihood and could also be for the top overall seed. Not much separates the two at the moment.

That's a lot of travel for the Irish between now and a presumed NCAA quarterfinal at Hofstra or Gillette in 35 days. No other top team has more than one road game left (conference tournaments excepted where applicable) and no likely flights.

Re: April 4 polls - Princeton looking better for Ivy tourney

Princeton beat Dartmouth 8-4 Saturday (4/16) to go 2-2 in the Ivies now. Penn took 2 OTs to beat Harvard 7-6 after Harvard got 2 in the last 1:52 of regulation; had Harvard won it would have really hurt Princeton. Yale beat Brown 10-6. Some teams have played 4 league games now, others 5. The standings:
Cornell............4-0
Yale...............3-2
Penn...............3-2
Princeton..........2-2
Harvard............1-3
Brown..............1-3
Dartmouth..........1-3
Games remaining are

Dartmouth @ Penn
Harvard @ Princeton
Cornell @ Brown

Yale @ Harvard
Princeton @ Cornell
Brown @ Dartmouth

Imagine us playing Princeton back to back weeks at Schoellkopf. Woiuld be satisfying to win twice. But scary if we think Princeton is gathering steam.

If Harvard beats Princeton Saturday, the Tigers would come to Schoellkopf highly motivated.

On top of this, I would imagine that some of the proceeds from the sale of the jerseys go to support the Boiardi Foundation.

Cornell up to #3 in both polls this week. Not far behind Hopkins in either, and two first place votes from the media.

It'll be interesting to see how the seeding committee deals with Notre Dame if they go undefeated - particularly in comparison to our 2007 undefeated regular season and #1 ranking where we still wound up as the #4 seed.

LaxPower, trying to emulate the NCAA process, has Notre Dame #2, behind Syracuse.

[www.laxpower.com] has ND seeded first, Cornell third. This is the TSI column (tournament seleiction index): "There is no strict formula used by the NCAA Selection committee to determine what teams are invited to the tournament. However, the committee does examine certain criteria and probably priortizes them by some weight factors. The Tournament Selection Index (TSI) attempts to guess at the factors that the committee uses and weighs them uniformly. The TSI factors are: Computer Ranking, Polls, RPI Ranking, Strength of Schedule Ranking, Quality Wins, Losses and performance in the teams final five games."

It was interesting in the polls to see Villanova-Bucknell-Penn grouped at 10-12, a good showing for PA schools. NYS has six in the top 20. Note also that Princeton merits not a single vote in either poll yet predicts to be seeded #12, helped by the #3 strength of schedule. Syracuse deserves credit for playing such a tough schedule (#1) while Cornell is #8, but perhaps not hurt as badly as by losing to the Cadets. Notre Dame at Syracuse April 30 will be a huge game.

I'm assuming there are 9 autobids, right? If we put the conference leaders in those spots we have:

ACC - Duke
America East - Stony Brook
Big East - Notre Dame
Colonial - Delaware
ECAC - Denver
Ivy - Cornell
Metro Atlantic - Detroit
Northeast - Mt. St. Mary's
Patriot - Bucknell or Colgate

That leaves 7 at-large bids. The following are locks for an at-large:

Syracuse
Hopkins
Virginia

Villanova, Penn, Carolina, and Maryland would be the last 4 in based on that ranking. Princeton could very well be a bubble team, and will be playing for their tournament life when we meet them at Schoellkopf in two weeks.

Not quite. Only 6 Autobids for 2011:
American East Conference
Colonial Athletic Conference
Eastern College Athletic Association
Ivy Group
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference
Patriot League

ACC is too small. Big East is too new (2012 they will have an autobid and tournament).

Princeton needs to get back to .500 to be eligible.

Season ending today based on laxpower NCAA criteria:
1 Syracuse
2 Notre Dame
3 Duke
4 Cornell
4 Johns Hopkins
4 Denver
7 Virginia
8 Villanova
9 Hofstra
10 Bucknell
11 North Carolina
12 Penn
13 Maryland
15 Delaware
16 Stony Brook
51 Detroit

Last out: Yale. Quick look has Cornell going through Maryland and JHU to get to the FF vs. SU. [EDIT: Maryland won't come to Ithaca because lax only seeds 8 and does matchups by geography. Forgot about that bit.]

Princeton is 4-6 now with 2 RS games remaining plus the tournament. If they split their last 2 and get into the tournament 5-7 then they have to win both tournament games because you need a .500 record to be considered ... unless, one assumes, you're the AQ. They could perhaps win both RS games to get to 6-6 then lose the tournament title game, be 7-7, and have a shot at a playoff spot. But if Cornell doens't go as the AQ, it's going to knock out a bubble team.

I doublechecked Princeton's record via the Princeton-Dartmouth box score for the game Saturday at Gillette Stadium. Attendance just over 5,000.

Cornell's #1 spot in playoffs presumes no late-season letdown vs. Brown, which has happened.

Not 'til 2013.

As it stands now, by 2013, there will be 8 auto and 8 at larges. It gets mighty tight for at large spots after you include 2-4 ACC schools and Hopkins every year.

Lacrosse Pollsters Love Johns Hopkins, What Else Is New?
Anytime you have a Johns Hopkins team that has two losses, one to Syracuse and one to a Princeton team with a losing record, you have to, HAVE TO, rank them higher than a one-loss Syracuse team and a two-loss Cornell team that just beat up that Syracuse team. You just have to. And to be honest, they should probably be ahead of undefeated Notre Dame as well. Why? Because, that's why. [www.nunesmagician.com] (Syracuse sports blog)

You didn't bold enough. Cornell had a halftime lead but was outscored 7-4 in the second half (and was outshot 26-13). I didn't see the game but you have to micron-thick skin to be offended by the word 'debacle' in that overwhelmingly positive blurb.

But seriously, folks, that's how lacrosse is sometimes - there are runs - no surprise from a high-powered team trying to catch up. And, at that time we were still trying to find an answer to our faceoff problems. Virginia is much better than their current ranking and record suggests, and the events of that second half IMHO really don't qualify as a debacle. The last Virginia game at Schoellkopf, now THAT was a debacle, as was the Ohio State first round game in Ithaca that eliminated the 2008 (?) team.

Clearly, every time we lose the ball we lose the face off ergo 53% is 100%
