Duke 10 - Providence 1 currently in a lightning delay in the 3rd quarter.
Maybe they can just call it a day. Painful to watch.

Happy Lax weekend everyone! One thing the NCAA did do well...scheduling. Being able to watch every freaking game televised with minimal overlap was quite good. Now all I have to do is find a barstool somewhere with ESPNU.

Saturday, May 12
12:00 p.m. First Round – Providence 3 at (1) Duke 18
 2:30 p.m. First Round – Towson 6 at (4) Cornell 14
5:00 p.m. First Round – Navy at (8) North Carolina - postponed to Sunday
 7:30 p.m. First Round – Notre Dame 10 at (3) Johns Hopkins 11 (OT)

Sunday, May 13
12:00 p.m. First Round – Princeton 8 at (6) Georgetown 9 (OT)
 2:30 p.m. First Round – Loyola 10 at (5) Albany 19
 5:00 p.m. First Round – Delaware 14 at (2) Virginia 8
 5:00 p.m. First Round - Navy 8 at (8) North Carolina 12
 7:30 p.m. First Round – UMBC 13 at (7) Maryland 9

So far the seeds have either won or are winning so it doesn't yet matter, but does the NCAA reseed?

It makes me very sad to see all that rain in NC and in Baltimore. We haven't had any rain in over 2 weeks and none in sight until maybe Tuesday. My corn is not happy. Feel free to divert the rain to Indiana. help

Well it's officially on. Next week in Princeton: The battle for counting after each goal supremacy. In one game, the Hopkins band will mercilessly count hit a drum and count the number of goals scored and then declare, "we want more!" In the other game the cornell band will do the same. Hop fans will cry foul! "That's our super duper creative thing we've done forever." I'm not sure Cornell fans will care... Luckily, next week it's unlikely Hop will be scoring a ton of goals against either PU or GT. That will keep the math simple.

In all seriousness, why are they so damned attached to the counting thing? Have they never seen it anywhere else and honestly think is unique and creative? Just seems like a really pedestrian thing to get attached to.

I have mixed feelings about the result. Although I am generally loathe to root for Princeton, I have even a greater disdain for JHU, and Princeton would probably have a stronger shot to knock off JHU at home next week.

That being said, GT has a darn good chance next week.

Last year, UMass, Hofstra, and Cornell were all put in the same quarterfinal bracket, so only one had a shot at getting to the final four. This year, it will be either Cornell or Albany--the two best "northern" teams. Bummer.

Many of the so-called "experts" picked Loyola in this game. Must have really lit a fire for UA, as they are taking Loyola to the woodshed. Certainly will put us on our toes, and there should be no reason for overconfidence.

In the fogged minds of some, if you're not playing someone from Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, or DC, you're playing an easy team. Add Syracuse, I suppose. Everyone else is a "cupcake."

Actually, I kind of feel badly for Cottle, who did speak out on how the criteria tied the hands of the committee and called for a rethinking on the part of the NCAA. I did cheer for UMBC but wouldn't have been too disappointed to see Cottle advance. By advocating a change in the criteria he could wind up hurting his team in the future. Shows integrity and fairmindedness--unlike some of the Hopkins birds on laxpower, who want to hang on to their automatic top four seed no matter what.

So in the quarters we'll have (using KRACH rankings):

#1 Cornell against #5 Albany
#2 Duke against #10 UNC
#4 Georgetown against #6 Hopkins
#12 UMBC against #15 Delaware

Did someone say we got a soft pairing?

Wonder how they'll decide who the home team is in the UMBC-Delaware game, since both were unseeded and unseeded teams are technically not in rank order by any criteria (well, except maybe Providence).

From Geoff Shannon's blog on Inside Lacrosse before the MD-UMBC game:

"You know, with Virginia gone Maryland has a much easier road to Baltimore."doh

Then again, he also wrote:

"Up in Princeton it'll be Johns Hopkins vs. Georgetown and Cornell vs. Albany. The more you look at it, the more you realized how much the Big Red were screwed in the pickings. They should have had a road to the finals against Duke, instead of having to possibly face the Blue Devils in a semifinal match-up."

Heck, I'm worried about Albany, never mind Duke.

We should be worried. Albany has something to prove. 'course, so does Cornell.

Our pairing looks tougher now that the other bracket got softer. And it's becoming clearer with the other bracket looking less strong is that if the favorites all advance (well, the ones left standing), the de facto title game absolutely would be the top-ranked team against the top-seeded team on Saturday not Monday.

I can see the southern contingent arguing, should the Cornell-Albany winner get to the finals and then win, that it was an off year for lacrosse.
