Fraternity misdeeds elsewhere make it tougher on the Cornell Greek system.
SUNY Buffalo freshman Sebastian Serafin-Bazan died 4/17/19. CNN says, "Serafin-Bazan was at the Sigma Pi fraternity's off-campus house when an undisclosed incident that led to the student's injury took place, the fraternity said when they learned of the incident last week." He had been hospitalized five days earlier with "a serious medical condition." The fraternity told CNN it "deplores hazing" and Buffalo President Satish K. Tripathi said, "As the investigation into this very serious matter continues, let me reiterate that our university has zero tolerance for hazing." And yet Greek life continues to tarnish itself. 1. I believe many universities would be happier if the Greek system went away.
2. The Greeks are helping dig their own grave. I just drove past my old fraternity house (TEP, defunct, for drinking/hazing or a combination) and it's being turned into apartments.
3. Greek alumni are more involved in alumni affairs, give more, send their legacy kids to their universities more often, and are better ambassadors. Trying to recall if data says they are more successful in life than non-Greeks; I could see that going either way, and do you judge that by income, good works, elected office, judgeships, or what.
