I'm guessing Sandy Weill. Yes, he's already made huge gifts to the school but he's still rich and he isn't getting any younger. And he just found a buyer for one of his Central Park West apartments at or near the $88 million asking price. Edit: Upon reflection, "Sandy Weill" and "anonymous" are not words usually found in the same sentence.

With our luck, the R&D would go to better livestreaming of the public part of trustees' meetings. They could use a very low frame rate and still capture virtually all the action. (Aside: A vendor came in 10 years ago to show off a videoconferencing system that seemed to have impossibly optimistic specs. 30 fps, we asked? Sure, he said, if you sit really still.)

Liked the part about Skorton ending a late-in-the-game meeting with NYC in the manner of a Steve Jobs MacWorld announcement and he says "just one more thing" moments and whips out the new iPad: Skorton ends the meeting by saying, Oh, by the way, we've also got a commitment from one person for $350 million.

A lot of use feared that Stanford's trump card of knowing tech startups would trump Cornell's knowing how to build a medical college in NYC. It sounds as if Cornell was a lot savvier, and the alumni were more supportive, and that made the difference. Now to make it all happen.

Yes it will be interesting to see how they are able to get the school up and running by September from hiring faculty to getting students. Probably the toughest part of that is getting students since the school didnt exist when most students were applying for grad school for next fall. I wonder when students will be able to apply to this school

I was wondering about that, too - perhaps they'll give some students accepted into "regular" STEM grad programs the option of switching to the NYC campus?

Cornell is choosing between a Facebook widget and eBay auction.

According the Ithaca Journal,

Moody’s has upgraded Cornell University’s fiscal outlook from negative to stable, but offers a warning about the Ithaca-based Ivy League school’s move toward building a high-tech research campus on Roosevelt Island.

The rating agency said the university has a “very strong market position,” but it is carrying a high amount of debt and “thinner operating cash flow than similarly rated peers.”

I think they broke ground on Gates at Cornell back in March of this year with target completion for the end of 2013. I have seen it referred to in Cornell press releases as William H. Gates Hall and more recently as Bill and Melinda Gates Hall. I'm not wild about the design or the location.

That is simply an awesome pickup. My company was founded by her sister, Judy, and a number of its early employees were PhD students under Deborah at USC. It's harder to find a better person who is great at what she does and can really bring people together and build a team like that, so if this is the first hire it's a great indication of things to come.

It's interesting that they are going with open offices in the context of mixing academia with multiple commercial ventures. In the government lab where I work we are trying to build a bridge to industry by making our unique technical facilities available. One thing that every company our people talk to inist on is absolute security of their offices to protect intellectual property. The bosses (at least) may like open offices in their own buildings, but they absolutely refuse to mingle with anyone else.

I don't think so. Look at the picture in the story George64 posted with the Cornell Tech logo drawn in "neon lights" over top of the NYC satellite image - they're pretty clearly referencing the pattern they see in the streets, not the angle of the island itself.

Ugarte is correct. The graphic artist took considerable license. The top of the T aligns with 23rd Street, but nothing else aligns with much of anything. Park Avenue (perpendicular to 23rd) appears to be 29 degrees from true north.

Dude. Dude. The angle of the streets aligns (roughly) with the rivers to the east and west. That's what I mean when I say that the island is "at an angle".

The Sun gets the story and provides information and quotes. A Sun writer may not have the background (or the moxie / chutzpah / WAGing of a veteran reporter) and doesn't feel comfortable saying, "Dean H was close to Amazon. Sources close said he was disturbed by the anti-tech atmosphere in NYC, pissed at AOC, felt Cornell Tech has been slowing after the initial inspired founding years, and when MIT got wind, swooped in to bring him home to Boston, he took his Red Sox cap out of the closet and called the moving van." Something like that. If that's what it really was. It may be MIT promised fewer hours, a chance to rise higher in coming years. Cornell Tech is in its go-go early years and maybe the pace was too much.

Stanford still has a lead on Cornell in terms of entrepreneurship. At least Cornell is making an effort now.

The Sun can always do follow-ups. Be nice if there was someone assigned to weekly updates on the Chapter House. Of interest to alums maybe more than to undergrads. For the Class of 2019, the Chapter House has only existed as a burned out hulk when they arrived.
