Have only heard McRae, Murray, Cook, Downs, and Bell on defense. Anyone hear Gleed or Wallace?

By the way, Jan Pajerski is now listed as a forward on the roster. Wasn't he a defenseman last year?

Re: Score updates - Cornell @ Ohio St.
Posted by: cbuckser (---)

I've heard Wallace's name tonight. So, Gleed is scratched. At forward, I've heard the following ten names: Hynes, Vesce, Bâby, Matt McRae, Hornby, Palahicky, Chris Abbott, Hughes, Paolini, and Varteressian. I doubt Paul Varteressian played on the first power-play unit. The OSU announcer probably confused his #9 with Vesce's #8.

Yes, Pajerski was a defenseman last year.

Just got back from the game. Cornell played well sporadically, but Lenny was fantastic the entire game. He made some OUTSTANDING saves, and his reflexes were as sharp as I've ever seen. You could definitely tell that CU was a bit rusty from all the time off, but when they got pumped, they played very, very well. There were a bunch of excellent defensive plays, and the 2nd CU goal made me so happy because a rebound try just seconds before the goal sailed less than an inch above the crossbar.

The Cornell turnout was quite good, with probably 150 Faithful on hand. We were about as loud as the OSU fans without the band. We sang Davy at every period and goal, so we kind of made up for the lack of a band. Great job guys!!! LGR!

So all sports can be turned into basketball? yark

Personally, I don't see what the big deal was about a college game with no TV time outs lasting two and a half hours. Although in this case it was convenient to be able to drive home half an hour earlier. Or would have been if we hadn't closed the postgame party.

Incidentally, another factor in the fast game was CCHA ref Matt "No whistle! Move it!" Shegos.

No, John. To relieve the boredom factor, if that's OK with you.

Baseball games used to last 2:15 when I was a kid at the Polo Grounds. Pitchers didn't behave then as if every pitch might lead to a world-shaking event. This year's otherwise interesting World Series games extended almost four hours every night. Tiresome as hell. These are just games, fer chrissakes.

Basketball, by the way, may be the worst offender. The last four minutes on the clock last an eternity.

We made an impact, and USCHO shows that Michigan lifted our cheers (which most of us knew anyway): from the recap:

"The Cornell faithful showed in force, demonstrating to Ohio State fans just what a cheering section should do during a hockey game. The Big Red crowd, a mix of fans who traveled from Ithaca and Lynah alumni, brought "Sieve!" signs and newspapers, and chanted in a manner that should be familiar to anyone who’s attended a game in Michigan’s Yost Arena — Wolverine fans lifted the Lynah cheers years ago."

Cool.

Of course, the signs didn't last very long, thanks to a very angry usher who yelled "You can't have signs!" at any one who had one in their hands and took them away. The amazing thing was that this continued even after the game when some of us picked up "CORNELL" signs that were lying around (she'd missed them) and held them up while congratulating the team. (I had two of them confiscated from me postgame; I'm pretty sure that if she'd seen the "YOU'RE A SIEVE" sign I held in her direction as she walked away, it would have pushed her over the edge and gotten me "kicked out" 30 seconds before we all left.)

I shudder to think of the battle that would have ensued if David and Anne Haynes had gone to the Clarkson-OSU game last weekend. laugh

I don't find sporting events, including the brief pauses that allow the tension to build, boring. Now, if they wanted to ban TV timeouts from all college hockey games (sort of like the way soccer is played), I'd be all over that. It would reduce game time by at least 15 minutes, and make the pacing of TV games as natural as non-TV games.

The worst example of messing with the game to allow more time for commercials was in the NFL when the long TV timeouts had bloated the games to 3:30, so they changed the rules to allow the clock to run after incomplete passes, effectively reducing the amount of football that was played to make room for the ads. The NCAA wisely kept the rules of the college game unchanged, even though it makes televised games go on for a long time.

I don't recall saying anywhere that sporting events were boring. Sitting or standing around while waiting for play to resume is boring. Waiting for coaches to juggle lines interminably before a faceoff is boring. Watching lacrosse players stall while short stick middies replace long stick middies and vice versa every time the ball changes hands is boring. Watching Dave Righetti wasting everyone's time while mouthing inanities like "don't forget to back up the plate" on the pitcher's mound is boring. Enduring the end-of-game foul shot parade in basketball is boring.

Why anyone would want to spend 150 minutes rather than 125 to watch 60 minutes of hockey "play" is beyond me. Perhaps you can convince me, John, but I doubt it.

Reducing the lengths of commercial times in all sports would be wonderful--having the same effect that the new faceoff rule has had in college hockey. It might also result in players' salaries and owners' profits coming down from their current obscene levels.

I wonder if Knoepfli'll just take the path of least resistance and change his name. ;-)

The Faithful seem to have trouble whenever we go into a building that isn't accustomed to vociferous (cough, real, cough) fans (although that's no excuse for the fascist ushers at RPI, who should know better). I expect we'll have some problems with Burgermeister Meisterbergers at Albany, too, until we educate them.

That's what Keith Richard did after several years getting progressively tired of correcting people who thought his name was Keith Richards.

He didn't have much of a slapshot, though.
