The Sun's hockey preview came out today (starts about halfway down the page):

There didn't seem to be too much on national hopes/expectations or anything on difficulty of schedule, key games or information about television coverage. They also didn't have any input from other coaches around the league, or any discussion of how the pre-season and early season games for our competitors have gone and how those results may have matched or missed expectations.

Did they cover any of that earlier this semester?

I'm not a Sun basher. I like it, I've had it delivered to my door all 4 years. But, it is the Sun... I wouldn't expect a USCHO-like level of balanced, multi-viewpoint, comprehensive coverage (not to raise USCHO to heavenly levels, but they do a good job :-) ).

In the past, the Sun has addressed those issues in the previews, which is why I mentioned it. In fact, back late '80s and into the early 90s, when the Sun started (or revived) doing hockey pullout sections, there were typically articles addressing those points (not so much the national issues, as other than in 1990-'91 they weren't really relevant) and during the week (Tuesdays, IIRC) there was an ECAC wrap-up with interviews with coaches from other schools.

Since I think the Sun editors lurk here, perhaps they might think about re-reviving the practice?

Can someone explain the following that appears in one of the articles:
[Q]That is, until 1973 - one truly strange year.

The ECAC had just banned Canadians from playing.[/Q]
I was in Grad School in RPI in 1973 and assuredly I would recall this if it were true. RPI, like Cornell, had a virtually 100% Canadian hockey team at the time.

No idea what the author was thinking.

Dunno. Makes no sense.

That was about the time Cornell's Peter Titanic and Dick Decloe of BU were declared ineligible because their Junior teams paid some of their educational expenses. Also, in 1973 the NCAA placed Cornell on probation after two potential recruits (they never applied and Cornell didn't know they were coming until they showed up) were taken to the 1973 NCAA championships in Boston and had some expenses paid by the father of a former Cornell hockey player.

I also remember reading in former Cornell AD Bob Kane's book Good Sports something about a movement in the early '70s to restrict the number of Canadians you could have on your roster, but I can't seem to find it right now.

Nope, it wasn't in Kane's book.

In a 1995 New York Times article on the 25th reunion of the 29-0-0 team, Pat Putnam wrote: "When the [69-70] season was over, the NCAA said it was considering restricting the number of Canadians--foreigners was the word used--on a team." It never happened, of course.

Ummm. Didn't the origin of fish and fowl have some connection with the alledged Canadian ban. I searched the Sun archives but I think the article in question may have been from '99.
