Cornell Hires Melody Davidson As New Women’s Hockey Coach

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Melody Davidson, an assistant coach for the 2002 Canadian
women’s hockey team, has been selected as head women’s hockey coach
at Cornell, it was announced today (Aug. 7) by Andy Noel, Cornell’s Director of Athletics and Physical Education.

“We are thrilled to have Melody join our coaching staff,” Noel said. “She has a wealth of experience from coaching at the highest level of women’s hockey, which will likely translate into success here at Cornell. Her knowledge of the game and enthusiasm for the sport make her an ideal leader to advance our women’s hockey program within the Ivy League and competitive Eastern College Athletic Conference.”

Davidson becomes the seventh head women’s hockey coach at the University. She replaces Carol Mullins, whose contract was not renewed.

Davidson spent the past two years working with the Canadian National Team as it trained for the 2002 Olympics. The squad won five straight games at the Olympics, including a hard-fought 3-2 win over the United States in the gold medal game. She also helped guide the team to gold medals at the Women’s World Hockey Championship in 2001 and the Four Nation’s Cup in 2000. Davidson also served as the head coach of the 1999-2000 National Team, which captured Canada's sixth consecutive gold medal at the 2000 Women's World Hockey Championship and was an assistant coach with the 1994 team, which also won gold.

Prior to her recent responsibilities with the Canadian team, Davidson worked with Hockey Alberta in 2000-01 as the coaching development coordinator. She also served as the head coach of women’s ice hockey at Connecticut College from 1997-2000. The 1997-98 season was the inaugural year for women’s hockey at the school.

She was an assistant coach with the Edmonton Chimos in 1996-97 when the squad won a gold medal at the 1997 Esso National Women's Hockey Championship and coached Team Alberta at the Canada Winter Games in 1995.

A 1986 graduate of the University of Alberta, Davidson has a bachelor’s degree in physical education. She also holds several coaching certificates and received a national coaching diploma from the University of Calgary in 1996.

The Cornell women’s hockey team is looking to improve on its 9-18-1 mark from the 2001-02 season. The Big Red’s program is one of the oldest women’s collegiate hockey teams in the country, having played its first season 30 years ago.
