Did they give any justification on the show about why Hofstra was left out?

Hofstra

No, and in fact what they said on the show went against the most likely reason Duke was let in. The host said the RPI would be the most important thing. But the main thing Duke had going for them over Hofstra was more "quality" wins against the top teams, which is (for some reason) the NCAA's highest priotity selection criterion.

It would have been real nice to get put in the North, and be able to take the 15 minute ride out to Hofstra to see the team (if they win in the first round, obviously).

Oh well. Maybe they'll get all the way to the championship rounds for a ride to Rutgers.

Go Red!

neil, check out this link, it gives a decent reaction to the leaving out of a damn good Hofstra team and a "side" commentary on the selection criteria:

Thanks Ben, good article.

The only thing that still bothers me is the dis-incentive that the elite teams have for scheduling outside their little clique.

What seems to happen is that teams like Hofstra might get one or two shots at beating an elite team, while Duke gets four.

Then Duke winning one of those 4 games makes them a lock for the NCAAs, even though Hofstra crushes them. It doen't seem quite fair...

And don't get me started on how they decide who an elite team is!

They decide using the RPI, which is an improvement on the popularity contest they used in past years.
