ECAC Press Release for the Cornell-RPI Game

LAKE PLACID, New York--Freshman defenseman Charlie Cook scored the Big Red’s first two goals and Matt Underhill stopped 21 shots for his third shutout of the season as Cornell advanced to the championship game for the second straight year with a 3-0 blanking of fifth-seeded Rensselaer.

Cook opened the scoring for the Big Red just 4:42 into the contest, converting on a power-play goal. Freshman Mike Knoepfli and senior Krzysztof Wieckowski picked up assists on the eventual game-winner.

Seven minutes into the second period, Cook picked up his second goal of the year, as he fired a slap shot past the reach of Rensselaer sophomore netminder Nathan Marsters. Senior David Kozier assisted on the insurance tally.

The Big Red put the game out of reach 7:06 into the third frame, as junior Sam Paolini stuffed in a rebound as both teams had a man in the penalty box. Junior Matt McRae was credited with the assist.

Rensselaer mustered few quality scoring chances, as the nationally-ranked Engineers recorded just five shots on goal in the opening period. Five penalties hurt Rensselaer, while the Big Red were penalized just twice, both in the third period.

Marsters stopped 24 shots for Rensselaer, who fell to 19-13-4. The Big Red still have a chance to notch its third 20-win season in the last four years with a victory today in the Third-Place Game against Harvard.

Cornell upped its record to 24-6-2, and has now won six straight, is unbeaten in its last eight, and is 15-1-1 since mid-January.

*They mention the nationally-ranked Engineers, but don't mention that Cornell is nationally-ranked HIGHER than them. The first reference to the Big Red is correct. The second reference in the next paragraph refers to RPI, who have a chance to get a 20 win season with another win. We ALREADY have a 20 win season. And furthermore, Harvard is playing against the CORNELL BIG RED in the championship game, not the third place game. Pure incompetence*

I'll give you the "third place" quote. That is really embarrassing.

But I have to disagree with your frustration over "nationally ranked Engineers". It sounds to me like the author of the article is only calling RPI "nationally ranked" as a way of praising the Big Red defense. In other words, Cornell didn't shut down a team of scrubs, Cornell blanked a "nationally ranked" team.
