Coach Schafer got Coach of the Year!!!

Other noteables...
Bâby got Defensive Forward of the Year.
Murray got Defensive Defenseman of the Year.

Unfortunately, Danis got the Dryden Award.
Higgins got Rookie of the Year.
And, while Murray was considered, Cavosie got Player of the Year.

Quite a good showing by our RED!!!!

This was just what Moy & Blaeser posted in this weeks column. They made it sound so official, I thought it was, but perhaps it's not.

Looks like it's just their picks for the winners...

"Time to hand out our awards. We've seen quite a few games this season and this is based on what we saw, as well as reports and talks with others around the ECAC."

I don't think the award winners are announced until the banquet next weekend.

This is an annual confusion between USCHO's predictions of the ECAC awards and the awards themselves. The actual awards are announced in Lake Placid, although they're based on the regular season only, so now is an appropriate time to start speculating about them.

ECAC awards are typically announced at the Championship Breakfast Banquet Thursday to begin the Final Five festivities in LP.

Sorry guys, I should have read more carefully.

I was just TOO excited about the COTY, which always seems to elude Coach Schafer.

Gee, you don't suppose that tool Moy had any bias in picking an RIP player for POTY do ya?

Unlike people on this board who think Murray should win it? ;-)

At least in the category of POTY, it seems like they tried to predict who would be given the award (or at least predict the players that voters will be considering), rather than merely choosing the players they felt should be considered. As they wrote: "With Doug Murray winning the Ivy Player of the Year, we can eliminate Danis from the list of contenders. And only one of Murley and Cavosie will be nominated for Player of the Year. We'll go with higher scorer."

That said, I think voters will find it hard not to give POTY to someone on the team that was clearly the best in the regular season.

POTY from CU?

I don't think voters will find it hard to pick a non-Cornellian at all. Our team is very balanced and while we have some standouts (e.g. Murray) no one jumps out on the scoresheets the way Cavosie and Murley do. Well, the goalies do, but their cause is hurt by the way they split time this season (I'd probably vote for Danis for Dryden too...)

I think Underhill may have the inside track on COTY due to senioritis.

I think there is an agreement about the COTY award. The coach that has the greatest improvement from the Coaches' preseason poll position gets the award. Thus if you were predicted to finish first you could not possibly win (unless everyone finished exactly in the pre-season order, I'm sure someone here will work out the stats on that!).

For this year the differential is:

Cornell (3-1) +2
Clarkson (2-2) 0
Dartmouth (4-3) +1
Harvard (1-4) -3
RPI (6-5) +1
Brown (12-6) +6
Colgate (9-7) +2
Princeton (11-8) +3
St. Lawrence(5-9) -4
Yale (8-10) -2
Union (10-11) -1
Vermont (7-12) -5
I think by these standards Grillo wins the award this year.

...And, by those standards, Schafer shoulda won it in '96! Payback!!!

(In '96, IIRC, Cornell's increase was from pre-season 9th to the ECAC title (for a "+8";). Although, if I'm not mistaken, the COTY award only considers regular season performance, so... Ehh, so what?! He shoulda won it that year, regardless, dammit!!!)

I'll find out the numbers for '96 but I don't think COTY would have gone to Cornell. According to the TBRW Schafer should have won it in '96, anyone remember why he didn't?

The theory that year was that a first-year coach "never" wins COTY... but then of course in 1997 Stan Moore won it in his first season at Union, so we all knew that excuse in '96 was pretty much bullsh*t.

No, in '96 Schafer led Cornell to a 4th place finish, winning home ice on the last day with a win at SLU (great come from behind win). So we were a +5 that year, not +8. No idea if anyone did better that year but Beeeej is right about the first year rationalization.

You have to throw out all that seeding stuff... when 3-8 is from 23 to 22 points, the fact one team got 36 points makes it a super #1. If Schafer doesn't win I'll be floored. He didn't edge Cornell into first place... He blew the competition away by more than 2 4pt weekends...
That said, TOTY (team of the year) is the ultimate goal, but it has been a great ride =:)

Unfortuately, those blown away often lost by a goal or two. Thus in a single game elimination you can lose. That's also why best two of three is good for the early rounds, Just look at Michigan this year.

With the game we play we can lose to a good goaltender, so don't be floored. After all, we have won in the past due to good (excellent) goaltending.
