Ray Sawada

Ray Sawada ‘08, who was co-captain of the Big Red his senior year and afterward played for the Dallas Stars, passed away last night at the age of 38 while playing hockey. He leaves behind a wife and two young girls.

News reports I found said it was a heart attack

Jesus, what terrible news. Sawada was a mainstay during my time on the hill. He played with a passion, a physical edge, and a beaming smile, which lit up the Lynah faithful. He embodied the trademark Cornell power forward role that typified our game in those days. Good for a big hit or a greasy goal, he was a terrific athlete while not necessarily being the most skilled player. I didn’t know him personally but seemed like a great guy. Too soon.

OMG. That's horrible. RIP, Ray.

Devastatingly sad news.The first hockey memory that came to mind was Ray's role in this play, right after exiting the penalty box. He makes a great pass springing Iggulden for a breakaway, and then fights for the puck along the boards, leading to the game winner. RIP.

Oh, right. I knew there was someone else who was a regular in the lineup and also more recent than Mowrey.

Jeez, that's terrible news. You assume athletes are healthier even after they stop playing.

Also, once you pass 40, say, anytime you see an eLynah post with just a name as the subject line, or when you see trending names on Google, you think the worst.

For Boomers, in the past year we've seen too many rockers of the seventies (some in their 80s) who now can jam with Karen Carpenter.
