The espn+ schedule seems to indicate it will be available to subscribers without an additional cable subscription. (Knock on wood.)

This was not true last year, or at least the games were only available on the ESPN channels and not espn+. (I was able to watch about 30 minutes of the 2022 regionals before they told me my trial was over.)

so looking at the schedule..

If you have espn on cable/youtube/etc you can watch the stream as well as on the cable you pay for
If you pay for ESPN+ you can watch the stream

Both require you pay for something.

You can buy ESPN+ standalone without buying cable last I knew.

Right, I have espn+ as part of the Disney+ bundle, and I've used it to watch assorted college hockey games during the year. But what's different this season, compared to last, is that the NCAAs are available either through epsn+ or espn2. (For the regionals, it would prompt me, when I selected a game, as to which feed I wanted to try to access.)

I liked what I saw out of the Goophs.

Michigan was not impressive. They were bound to run into a team that could play defense at some point. Honestly, I think they were the weakest of the four.

Michigan was definitely not impressive in the semi, and the goalie Portillo was a liability. Quinnipiac is finally showing their potential, but I think Minnesota has just too many ways they can score, and they don’t need to rely on scoring first.

I was watching it on a big screen 4K and it was magnificent. The only thing I'd compare it to was the way the Soviets used to play, except it was both teams. Blistering speed on O and D, crisp passing, insane pace, no mistakes. Wonderful to watch. Had I a strong rooting interest I'd have probably had an aneurism.

What is a "big screen" these days? I've got a 65-inch plasma (last year of production at Panasonic, best TV ever circa 2015) and I'm starting to think 85 inches means big. Costco has some at the $2,000 level. LG just announced a 100-inch OLED G3, G3 clarifying that it's Gulfstream-level pricing, around $25,000.

Transitive property, we're number 1, amirite?

I thought Q looked waaaaay better here than they did in the various ECAC games I saw them play. Speed was remarkable and not what we saw against Cornell. Does that mean we played them, better than Minnesota, are better coached?

It takes a worldwide pandemic to stop us! Seriously though, these games are all so razor's edge, you'd think one of these years by being in a position to win, we'll actually get over the top. Since 2002, we've lost five regional finals and a national semifinal by one goal each. Including two overtimes (one triple). Oy.

If you say “rival” to mean “a strong team in the conference,” sure. But I would rank that team near the bottom of our biggest rivalries, at least at the time of this writing.

Now if someone brings this post back up in 20 years, I’ll happily reevaluate.

Quinnipiac (2023) joins Harvard (1989) and Yale (2013) as the only ECAC teams to win the NCAA’s without also winning the league tournament. (1954 doesn’t count since there was no ECAC for Ned’s RPI to win.)

Q and Y have as many national titles as they do Whitelaws.

But then this morning my phone informed me that Nate Silver tweeted about it (with his always-funny "Fighting Pollsters" joke rolleyes). bang

I’m getting old, I suppose, but if winning an NC$$ championship means one-and-done, two-and-through and paying players through sham NILs becomes the norm, than I’m content just having a competitive ECAC team. We did, afterall, shut out Q in the regular season.

I’m not totally naive, I know our players have gotten some great summer jobs in Ithaca and elsewhere, but college sports continue to lose any sense of propriety. Big time football and basketball lost it long ago. I recently read, “Georgia spent $4.51 million on football recruiting during the 2022 fiscal year.” Recruiting! And, BTW, get off my lawn!

To expand on this, I think the biggest reason this doesn’t hurt as much as it used to is that the biggest sports fandom disappointment I could ever imagine—the 2020 season getting canceled—dwarfs Quinnipiac or any other of our rivals winning the championship (as terribly depressing as that is). Nothing will ever be as depressing as the 2019-20 season.

I don't disagree, that was incredibly painful. But I'm also going to say something I think a lot of people have also thought but would prefer not to admit: The 2019-20 team was incredible, and while it might have been our best chance in a very long time to win a national title, there were still going to be fifteen other teams in the NCAA tournament just as determined to take home the trophy, many of them quite capable of it. Anything can happen in four games, as many supposedly championship-quality teams have discovered over the years. The abrupt and premature end to that season meant we would never have to find out; it allows us the luxury of believing a title was not just possible, but likely.

I still believe we will get there in my lifetime.

Someone should make sure Bearlover doesn’t have access to sharp objects.
Seeing our rivals win national championships over and over before we even come close is painful, but it actually hurts less every time.

It still hurts to think of March 2020 & what could have been.....

When I was nearly 8, the Mets didn't play take me out to the ballgame during the seventh-inning stretch because they were too busy firing their manager.

Nothing Cornell can do will hurt me the way the Mets do.

I agree with this. Did we have greater than 50/50 odds against any of NoDak, Minn St., Duluth, or BC? Probably not. But we would have been a 1-seed with a really good shot (almost 50%?) to make the frozen four, which we now haven’t accomplished in 20 years. And after losing in OT of the 2019 ECAC championship game on a blown call, even just winning that title in 2020 would have been an incredible outcome to every player, coach, and fan.

It is a remarkable quirk that our last ECAC Championship was 13 years ago. We have had a number of excellent teams since then, including 5 trips to the NC$$.

Just heard Pecknold on Boomer and Gio. He came off great. Very likeable, reasonably, but not overly humble. Only complaint is it would've been nice if he talked up the league a bit.

FWIW, we came in number 9 in the final USCHO poll, ahead of Sucks at 10.

He never talks up the league. It's always about Quinnipiac and him.

Which, whatever, but it's a major fault and probably a big part of the reason quite a few folks around the league don't seem to like him very much.

...but behind Denver at #6, who I would say Cornell beat pretty cleanly in the first round. The old biases are still alive and well.

Colgate beat Quinnipiac twice this year.

America's best sportswriter, Jason Gay, covered Quinnipiac's win over Minnesota today in the Wall Street Journal. That's decent publicity.

Attendance was 19,444, a full house. The Cornell-Maryland lacrosse championship attendance was 22,184 (capacity 40,642) at Rentschler Field at Pratt & Whitney Stadium (sounds like Columbia's nesting egg doll naming scheme).

Interesting. Didn’t know why he was disliked. Thought it was the 25 yo freshman.

One particular incident occurred in 2014. Cole Bardreau, who had recently returned from a serious neck injury, was checked hard into the boards by a Q player. As he lay on the ice, Pecknold screamed at the refs that he was embellishing. Schafer took exception to this, given Bardreau’s recent serious neck injury, and went off on Pecknold in the postgame.

Again, congrats to everyone here who was rooting for Rand/Q to win the national championship.

Counterpoint: You never see Quinnipiac talked up by us. We consider them a poor academic relation with a fabulous rink.

Which rink (Q's) by the way is getting some significant back-of-the-house work. I hear things such as the weight room are not on par with the main hockey bowl itself.

Every time you say how much “we” love that dumb concrete tomb, I’m going to dispute it here. We all aren’t photographers or fans of low minor leagues, bill. I think it’s a middling place to watch a game at best. Not nearly as bad as their old community rink (or Starr) was, but I really dislike watching games there.

I also hate how the recent coverage has talked about how they regularly sell out. I’ve yet to see a game in that place that could be described as “packed.”

The Q rink is another cookie cutter eye sore that will mark this age of tasteless stadium design the way Riverfront, Three Rivers, the Vet and Fulton County marked the 70s.

A machine for squeezing cash out of a captive human population that is pummeled by piped in garbage noise.

It's a fucking abattoir.

Oh come now, those bleachers at Starr had character! And it made it easier for the little grunions to scream at us while throwing tennis balls.

Source? Anyway, it doesn’t really matter what Schafer said publicly. Never in a million years is a coach going to admit that he was rooting against a member of his own league.

My source is that Schafer and Pecknold have had bad blood for at least a decade now? As seen in the article I already cited above?

I've heard it put that Schafer doesn't like Pecknold's attitudes when it comes to recruiting, transfers, poaching players, etc. but thinks he an "OK person." Whether that constitutes "bad blood" I can't say,

This is a much more reasoned take that gives some info but knows better than to draw an inference.

Assuming one bad incident = bad blood ten years later is a reach, to say the least.

I'll admit I have bad blood towards Pecknold, and I was starting to forget why until the Bardreau incident came back up.
