2023 NCAA 1R: Cornell vs Denver

Denver also has had the injury bug lately. Top scorer Massimo Rizzo and high-end defenseman Sean Behrens both returned for the NCHC semis against Colorado College after missing some time. Goalie Magnus Chrona missed four games as well, returned against CC, then came out with 10 minutes remaining in the game, seemingly reinjuring himself, though that was denied by coach David Carle.

Obviously anything can happen in a hockey game, but I’m happy we didn’t get Michigan. Colgate got Michigan, and with Michigan’s elite offensive talent I just have a feeling that game is going to end up something like 5-1 UMich. Denver should at least be a lower scoring affair, though looking at their roster and season stats they too are completely loaded. With respect to Denver dealing with injuries, only goalie Chrona appears to be potentially hurt at the present moment; the others played Saturday night. Meanwhile, seems we have a number of our own players who are banged up or straight up unable to play (DeSantis, Mack, Donaldson?). Maybe some will be ready to go by Thursday. It’s too bad we couldn’t hang on to a three-seed as the two-seeds look far more beatable. Oh well, can’t really complain.

Well, I think Q is the weakest #1, but we can’t play them. I think we have decent odds against WMU or a banged up BU.

Cornell's game is on ESPNews...I thought I got that channel but alas no.

I didn't watch the first game either but 5-1 is an impressive score. Still, I've wanted another shot at BU since the game against them earlier this year. Denver looks extremely good, too...if Cornell somehow wins both games I think it'll be the most impressive two game stretch of Cornell hockey I will have ever seen...er...watched the highlights of.

Gotta admit, it looks pretty sweet on a large 4k TV. It's been a long trip since listening to a broadcast over a phone line hooked into a PBX.

We owned the boards and had sticks in the lane all night. If the gameplan was "like against Harvard but more aggressive" it seems like it was executed really well.

Correct. This is one of the quirks of the NCAA rulebook.

It wasn’t unreasonable to go for it given DeSantis’s skills in that spot. I just thought that Chrona would be tough to beat and it was getting to be time to use the clock to our advantage. Thankfully this is a hypothetical discussion. Let’s go Red!!!!!!

Judging by their call of the game, I don't think they spent the bulk of their prep time researching *us*. I'm not saying they were Denver homers, but they were clearly surprised at the result. Even after 1.

During Shane’s interview they said it was the seventh game in a row with 1 goal or fewer scored against Cornell- first in PROGRAM a HISTORY.

That really surprised me.

Huh. I did not know that.

Got back from a charity dinner and finally was able to watch the game. Far better performance than against Harvard, and getting that early lead was obviously huge. I was surprised how passive DU was for most of the game, as teams that forecheck us hard and jam up the neutral zone have given us the biggest problems. Shane looks super confident, and we’ll need the best version of him on Saturday.

Desantis had 4 or 5 point blank opportunities where he either whiffed, couldn't get good wood on it or had bad puck luck with the puck bouncing over his stick. On better ice we could easily have had 5 or 6.

One other thing that stood out to me last night was how much better we were than at LP last weekend at winning the one-on-one puck battles along the boards and using active sticks to break up passes and disrupt Denver's flow. Played to our strengths perfectly.

My feelings exactly. Game articles didn't seem to capture that.

In my opinion, the biggest reason Cornell won was that they played incredible defense with their sticks. They gave Denver almost no shooting or passing lanes below the blue line the entire game. And Cornell used its size to win battles on the boards. One advantage Cornell should have against these young teams with elite skill is that Cornell is bigger and stronger. I am worried that there won’t be as many struggles on the boards against BU, which will try to strike more quickly in transition.

People are gonna keep talking about our defense, and rightly so, but what struck me was how many times we were just plain old faster on puck races.

The Big Red came out aggressive, flying, winning battles to loose picks, and putting its textbook forecheck to work. All the while, they frustrated Denver, the defending national champs. Which is not to say, of course, that they neglected the defensive end, obviously. They shut out one of the top scoring teams in the country. At one point Cornell held the Pioneers without a shot for 15 minutes.
