As of 7:33, the derps are still derping their derp on WHCU.

Presumably Radio Free Goebbels will cease shatting itself soon in preference for Jason.

But, Jesus fuck, what an embarrassment to have Sturmabteilung Tonight as the lead-in for our lads.

Why, with every name spelled out phonetically, do opponent announcers so often mispronounce our players names?

I’m actually listening to the UConn audio and syncing it with the video feed. Slightly more bearable. At least I can hear the crowd.

If I’m not mistaken, Grady Whittenburg is doing the commentary, solo, from a remote location (Lynah???) with the same video feed as is being shown on ESPN+. If so, he’s a miracle worker.

I have been surprised at how bad Grady has been this year. When he was the radio guy for Cornell he was amazing but years of pro video really developed terrible derp habits. He's essentially an ESPN broadcaster now. Up close and personal garbage. I love the guy, but woof.

Could be they are still lined up at the veal fattening pens from between periods. They won't announce turnstile until the third if they do it like prior years.

I would actually expect UConn to draw okay.

Cornell looked like the quicker, stronger team all night. I don't know if UConn had an off night or what but they could barely generate anything and looked horrendous in the neutral zone in particular. Definitely a few skilled players up front but they were very neutralized and Shane didn't really have too many difficult saves.

Best game Cornell has played since 2019-20. Cornell jumped on them in the first 1:15 and that obviously changed the complexion of the game, but Cornell skated with and out-gritted UConn all 60 minutes. UConn gave up a surprising amount of space and Cornell made them pay by connecting on some really nice passing plays. Cornell also had their sticks in the right position defensively all night long. I’m not sure UConn is really a top-10 team. Cornell still hesitates too long on the PP and that won’t work against Harvard. The freshman forwards + Seger continue to impress. Shane had to make few difficult saves but was solid, only giving up a few rebounds.

That is not entirely true.

In addition to Cornell hockey I also like:

my family (well... some of my family)
some old movies (old = < 1950)
some old blues songs (old = < 1940)
some, no, many old jazz songs (old = < 1960)
many old buildings (old = < 1400 )
some old people (old = < 1930)

And. Well, not much else.

Though to be honest I actually like you, ugarte, despite your limitations.

Suda, in a positive sense, stuck out to me again. Dependable defensively for a slightly undersized defenseman; I am "noticing" him defensively less and less. And boy was that a nifty pinch/shot on Bancroft's first goal! (Only on our team would 6'1" be undersized, but I digress.) Just crept into the open ice, was perfectly positioned, and didn't fool around with it.

And he only played 6 games last year! All upside.

Our breakout D this year, however, has been Rego, who has gone from pretty good to damn impressive. I like the freshmen a lot. Stienburg and Psenicka are officially out of my doghouse. If Berard starts producing at the clip he's capable of, we're going to be dangerous.

Warm ups are over. We're looking great. Beat Harvard.

My first Cornell hockey game since the 2019 MSG game against BU, and obviously pleased with the performance. Completely different team than we saw in Potsdam just a few weeks ago.

I agree with Skerk’s observations. Last year I thought Suda showed promise in his limited appearances, and he’s now become a mainstay. Nice to see Dirven, who struggled with defensive zone turnovers last season, return to form.

Overall we did fine with our breakouts, and the relatively few times we got penned in we smartly chipped it out, albeit with a few too many icings. But we dominated at the faceoff dot, so that wasn’t a big issue.

Shane wasn’t under too much fire, but his positioning was excellent as was his rebound control. If he plays like that consistently we’re going to win a lot of games.

You could see from even the 1st weekend against Duluth that Bancroft has star potential, and last night he broke out in a big way. Great wrister on the 1st goal, and even more impressive were his tip-ins on his other two goals. We haven’t had too many guys with that skill in recent years (Joe Devin comes to mind), which is really key for the power play. Speaking of the power play, it was noteworthy that Bancroft was playing on the 1st power play unit, I believe taking Berard’s usual spot.

Great to see Psenicka and Stienberg get on the scoresheet last night, and I thought both of them had strong games. Berard had an assist, and hopefully he’ll get going too. And Mack, who has a lot of ability, is starting to find his rhythm at the college level.

Hard to ask for a better performance heading into the Harvard game. Harvard of course is loaded with talent, but we should have confidence that if we play like we did last night we can come out with a win.

If we play like we did last night, we can beat anybody. Rarely seen a more complete victory over a quality team.

The trick is whether it is dependably repeatable, or the stars aligning in one glorious, transient moment.

There's a lot of posts in this threaad about how well we played during that monumental, good old fashioned ass-kicking and name-taking last night... And sure, we played well, but something doesn't add up. How in the hell was UConn 10-2-2? I just don't get it. They played decent teams, many from Hockey East. Heck, even if they were 7-2-2 from just playing AHA teams that would still be reasonably respectable. I never in a million years would have predicted last night's outcome. I thought we were going to get smoked. Did UConn all order the fish at Olive Garden or something? They looked like a bunch of jokers on skates, not a team with a 10-2-2 record.

And winning is one thing... But schooling them 6-zip?!?

A couple of leftover items from MSG game:

1) Does anyone know what the official attendance was? I'm guessing there were 10-11,000 people in the building. As expected, not many UConn fans.
2) I was disappointed no hats were thrown onto the ice when Bancfroft registered his hat trick. I wanted to throw mine, but since I was 18 rows from the ice I would have had trouble throwing it that distance and getting it over the glass.
3) Did anyone get an explanation what the officials were looking for when they had that lengthy video replay after the penalty on Rego early in the second period? The play didn't seem to justify such a lengthy delay.
4) It didn't make a difference, but that was a horrible call midway through final period when the UConn player hooked Mitchell, and threw a punch at him. How did UConn end up with a power play? If they were going to give Mitchell and Rego roughing penalties for the altercation, the UConn player should have gotten a double minor, with one for roughing as well.
5) In addition to our fast start, Stienburg's goal late in the first period was key. I had the feeling that if UConn could have picked up a goal before the end of the first period and went into the locker room trailing just 2-1 after being sorely outplayed for most of the period, we would have had a much tougher game on our hands. Instead, we went up 3-0 and UConn never really got into the game.
6) Was anyone else surprised that UConn kept Terness in goal in for the whole game? Not all of the goals were his fault, but he looked shaky much of the game, giving up a lot of rebounds. I would have thought UConn might have pulled him heading into the third period trailing 5-0.

Terness looked fine to me and was probably the only positive about UConn's performance, but yes, perhaps he should've been pulled to at least energize the team. UConn tried to generate energy by being chippy and drawing penalties but it obviously didn't work

Same here but I was 20 rows back and behind a net. I got the feeling that a lot of people didn't realize it was a hatty until it was announced.

I think Rego's stick got high and up into the helmet but it looked like it rode up his body rather than being a direct crack to the shield.

Everything clicked last night. I loved it.

Jason Weinstein seemed to think that Schafer asked for the review, and was asking for what happened shortly before the penalty to be reviewed. That was the same player Rego tangled with having hit Rego pretty high (close to his head) and into the boards.

Here's one for the guys that are on top of the rules: if they had ruled the original contact a penalty against the UConn player, would Rego's penalty that happened later have stood?

I can't imagine a penalty gets taken off the board if time is rolled back. It's not a save point. The infraction against the rules still occurred.

Maybe UConn was intimidated by playing in MSG?

On another topic, Bancroft is a 21 yr old freshman with SIX years of Major Junior experience.

There used to be rules about losing years of college eligibility...is that still an issue?

Same. I was way up in the 200 level and the only way my hat could have made it to the ice was if it had a brick in it.

Would throwing a hat at MSG get someone thrown out? (Without a brick, that is.)

I was wondering if the review was for the elbow to Rego’s head before he took his penalty. I too am curious had that call been made, would Rego’s penalty have been wiped out.

Not quite the same, but I remember the Penguins committing a penalty on a breakaway for a penalty shot. But then a review caught a missed good goal, and since you can't have two goals on one stoppage (whatever that means), the penalty shot became a power play. Pens killed it and the guy who committed it immediately scored once he got back on the ice.

So in that different NHL case, a later penalty still counted after a goal that was missed. But it became a power play instead of a penalty shot.

Assuming you are correct, what do they do if a penalty is called 30 seconds after an on-ice ruling of no goal during play that winds up being reviewed and found to be a goal? I'm fairly certain the clock is reset to the time of the goal. Would the penalty that occurred later also be assessed at that reset time (the goal time.)

And while I'm definitely not a rules maven, I'm fairly certain that a goal scored by the other team in the above scenario doesn't count if after a stoppage an earlier non-goal is reviewed and found to be a goal, right?

So a goal in that situation comes off the board but a penalty doesn't?

In the NHL at least, that first scenario is still a goal and a penalty, if I remember the game I described correctly.

Which I probably don't.

That is my assumption. "Civil actions" (goals, offsides, icings) are wiped out when the clock rewinds. "Criminal actions" (penalties) persist.

I'm guessing. ACM will know the exact rules and their evolution since the Harding administration.

According to hockeyDB, Bancroft played six seasons in the OJHL and MHL, which are Junior A leagues and considered to be amateur. Major Junior is the next level up; it is considered a professional level and playing in Major Juniors would remove NCAA eligibility.
