Seger and Kempf out. That's not so good. Wallace I guess is still sick. Kovich may be in the doghouse based on some comments Mike has made.

I don't know if we're ever going to get the Jimmy Rayhill Party going. I had thought he was one of the highly anticipated recruits.

Sacred Heart has undoubtedly looked like the better team so far. It's a question of how long they can keep up the forecheck

That first five minutes of the second was the best we have played this year. It is killing us that 20, 26, and 15 can't find the net this season.

at least the second period isn't sleepwalking but still not crisp. SHU doesn't look like the better team anymore but they're still winning so...

We dominated the period with 17-4 SOG and 29-6 overall shots. If we play like this in the third and stay outta the box the odds are we will come back and win.

Not crisp is an accurate description. We are working hard and getting plenty of O zone time, but we cannot string together the final pass in prime shooting position; instead the passes end up in the teammate’s skates or just behind him.

Compare that to our great 2020 team, and it’s night and day.

That can't be the level of comparison, because anything short of a F4 squad will be well short.

A fair comparison is with last year's team. So far we are deficient in most ways. We aren't finishing the plays, we aren't shutting down the other team's scoring line, and our goaltending is pretty good, not great. OTOH we have excellent team speed and are probably just as good at setting up scoring opportunities. And we aren't trying to absorb 12 new players.

This is going to be a team that only dominates really substandard teams, and who plays competitively against all but the very top teams. We're probably looking at 60-70% of games going down to the final few minutes, which means an exciting year and also means losing a fair number of games.

Just enjoy the ride, this is a team to root for, not one to exercise critique of. It's going to be a combination of stirring battles and a shit show.

Hey, I get all that. I’m just trying to point out where this particular team through 8+ games is falling short of where we’d like them to be. It’s hard to fathom considering they guys you mentioned in your prior post have a proven track record of scoring.

Back in my student days, the team's coach used to teach the ice skating PE. I think she's retired now but she was also one of the first players on the women's hockey team when they started play in the 70's

I thought the following was interesting, and not something I remember seeing before, so I thought I'd see what others think.

At 17:02 the second period the Sacred Heart goalie was having some sort of equipment issue. After a fairly short time one of the refs skated over to the Sacred Heart bench and told their coach to either put in a backup or take a time out. There was a little back and forth, and the Sacred Heart coach did wind up using his timeout.

Is this some new rule, or just an interestingly aggressive interpretation and enforcement of an old one?

This is a change to Rule 14 ("Adjustments to Clothing and Equipment" ) that was adopted this season. Text of the proposal:

"Goalkeeper equipment issue (protocol). The Ice Hockey Rules Committee added additional guidance when goalkeepers have an equipment issue. When an equipment issue causes the goalkeeper to come to the bench for assistance, officials shall instruct the coach to prepare the backup goalkeeper for play.

"If the issue requires additional time, the coach will be given the chance to use their timeout or substitute for the goalkeeper. If the team does not have a timeout, a delay of game penalty may be issued.

"Rationale: While rare, the Ice Hockey Rules Committee believes clarity is needed for officials and coaches to manage these situations"

This should be called the Colgate Goalie Rule. There was a time when Colgate only needed to skate two lines because their goalie kept having well-timed equipment issues.

Thanks for the answer!

Interestingly in this case the goalie had not come to the bench. He had taken off his helmet, blocker, and glove, but was attempting to deal with whatever he was dealing with in the crease.

I'm not particularly sure why Berard (LW), Psenicka (C), and Bancroft (RW) aren't together yet. Berard is having a problem getting hit when open, and Bancroft and Psenicka are good at that. I also think Bancroft and Psenicka will feed off each other. Let Stienburg figure out whatever's holding him back this season on his own time.

Calling for better play and better results from the team and the coach is NOT harmful to a hockey team any more than praising the team and the coach creates a superior hockey team. Great expectations are a prerequisite, not a hindrance, for athletic success.

It's a difference in how people think of fandom. There is a certain personality type, extremely common on social media, who for lack of a better word bitch constantly about their team, or the refs, or the league, or whatever. Everything is always making them angry or irritated or disappointed. They paid for their ticket, dammit. They are owed wins.

This is what makes being on any professional team's game threads revolting. These people are ubiquitous, perhaps because social media skews adolescent male (although one feels intuitively that most of these people don't mature as they age). The constant whining and kvetching is stupid and pointless, but mostly it is entitled.

Short of shooting those people into the sun (I am accepting Feasibility Studies), Ignore is the best policy. If Ignore is not a technical option, then either complete silence or a carpet bombing of shaming and derision.

As with the Right, we can't make it stop, but we can make it a game.

In my opinion the pursuit of excellence in sports is a worthwhile enterprise, and size matters. Bemidji State has an enrollment of 2,800 students, a modest budget, and a D-1 hockey team ranked in 24th place. Cornell Men's varsity hockey is currently ranked in 27th place - up from 34th place. Don't blame me. These are not my numbers. If you are content with these facts enjoy the season and the elbow room in Lynah Rink.

do you know what the cornell budget is compared to Bemidji and what kids can get into the school vs Bemidji?

What are the differences in recruiting areas as well? Can Cornell create a squad of 50% ny state kids and be decent vs a squad of 50% Minn kids?

You can't accurately judge the team's level by citing the pairwise 1/3 of the way into the season. If we're still that bad at the end of the year, then fine, it's fair to question why we had a subpar season.

Weve lost 4 games. Losing the opening two was entirely plausible against an opponent 5 or 6 games into the season. Q was highly favored, and hard to say that we were favorites on the road against Clarkson.

Just as drawing grand conclusions from early in the season is useless and not informative, of we have a single crappy season or also is useless at evaluating the program; one season does NOT indicate a trend. You need to look at the long term, say the last 15 years or so, to assess where our ceiling (and expectation) really is.

I don't think oso was a stats major
