“In 1961, [Leroy] Grumman gave Cornell a DC-3 airplane. Named the Far Above and used through 1970, it flew more than 250,000 miles and carried more than 30,000 total passengers—including staff and faculty, athletic squads, and student groups.”

One of those 30,000 passengers was a hockey player, Walt Stanowski ‘68, I think, who missed the team bus to Boston and was flown there in the Far Above.

I had always heard the plane was named Far Above It All.

This from a friend, “Another piece of trivia is that at the ECAC finals in 1970, Craig Brush refused to get off the bus at the Boston Garden. He was unhappy with his lack of playing time. Harkness had the team assembled in front of him and asked where “Pigpen” was, and was told where and why. Harkness then went to the bus and discussed the issue, as I was led to understand, promised Craig and his line more playing time. This paid off when Ed Ambis, Craig’s linemate on the fourth line, scored the tying goal against Clarkson that Cornell went on to win 3-2 when John Hughes put in the winner in the final seconds after a previous goal had been disallowed seconds earlier.”

My apologies. It's just that I prefer fond memories to current speculations about the future of Cornell men's hockey - which also tend to be repetitive.

The recent announcement that Ruth Bader Ginsberg ‘54 and Toni Morrison, MA ‘55, would be featured on US stamps in 2023, prompted me to do some philatelic research. In 1997, football legend, Glenn “Pop” Warner, class of 1894, was featured on a US stamp and Ken Dryden ‘69, was featured on a 2015 Canadian stamp - Great Canadian Goalies/Grands Gardiens de But Canadiens. Also, part of that series, one of my all-time favorites, “Gump” Worsley, Ranger goalie when I started watching hockey at MSG in the late ‘50s.
