Four current players (and seven alums) got invited to the Hockey Canada Summer Showcase. The current players are sophomore Ashley Messier and three members of the incoming class, Avi Adam, Sarah MacEachern and Mckenna Van Gelder. There's at least one committed recruit attending too. Basically, they're bringing together the senior national team, the NTDP and U18s for this event.

D Rory Guilday made the U.S. roster for the world championships later this month. I think that will make her the first Cornellian to play for the senior women's national team?

Canada's roster should be out soon. This is the first time they're having a women's world championship in the same year as the Olympics.

From the same friend — “Cornell lost places on Canada’s NWT. Saulnier did not make it. Jaime Bourbonnais was one of the last cuts from the Olympic team and she did not make it this time, either. Brianne Jenner and Zandee-Hart the only returnees, with Kristin O’Neill being added. Rebecca Johnston and Laura Fortino were both invited to camp but could not attend, so no surprise they were not on it.”

The USCHO preseason poll has Cornell at No. 12 (and with ECAC teams in spots 6-12).

The ECAC preseason poll has Cornell at No. 6, with D Rory Guilday on the preseason all-ECAC team.

Huge ECAC weekend with Cornell and Colgate at Quinnipiac and Princeton today and tomorrow. Cornell has Quinnipiac first, with both games at 6 p.m.
Preview: [cornellbigred.com]

In national team news, Rory Guilday made the U.S. roster for the Rivalry Series with Canada in November. Doug Derraugh is on the Team Canada coaching staff, along with players Brianne Jenner, Kristin O'Neill, Jamie Bourbonnais and Micah Zandee-Hart. Canada went with 0 current NCAA players; the U.S. picked 6 (Cornell has no games during the series, which is Nov. 15, 17 and 20.)

One could stay after the football game at Princeton Saturday and see the Cornell-Princeton women's hockey game at 6 pm. You'd have 2, 2-1/2 hours to kill between games. Less if you also tailgate after football.

The women did well to split a road weekend against two ECAC opponents who, like Cornell, are also in the Top Ten. No. 8 Cornell lost 4-1 to No. 7 Quinnipiac on Friday, but bounced back to beat No. 10 Princeton, 3-1, on Saturday, breaking a 1-1 tie with two third-period goals.

Didn’t get a chance to watch today’s game, but Friday’s was very enjoyable and much closer than the final score would indicate. Quinnipiac’s goalie was fantastic. I’m looking forward to catching the games at Lynah next weekend.

Nice game versus Princeton. Hobey Baker rink (capacity 2,000) is better suited to games that draw in the hundreds of fans. Attendance listed at 542.

Cornell freshman McKenna Van Gelder got goals one and two, the second (GWG) was a nice wrist shot that found the unprotected upper right corner. I thought Cornell played quite well but maybe not yet well enough to be a final four contender.

Note: Our football tickets, part of a block a Princeton friend got, were $6 each. The hockey tickets were $12 each for those who aren't Princeton students (free admission to Princeton sports) and there were three people working the booth. I hope Princeton recouped the box office overhead.

Wash rinse repeat Princeton hockey at 7 pm Friday 11/4 at Baker Rink for the Cornell men. As of today (Monday 10/31) standing room tickets are still available. It may be declared a sellout as I believe it was last year even though you'll see several hundred empty seats; those are set-asides for students who might attend. They'll be $15. Better than $40 for Cornell at Harvard.

See photo below. Does this look like 504 people? One in four seats should be filled.

Closer to 54.

With a heritage including names like Nash, von Neumann, and Einstein, one would hope that Princeton, of all places, could count!

Cornell beats SLU, 7-6, coming back from 6-5 down with two goals while Gillis Frechette was serving a 5-minute major for cross-checking. One was a SHG and the other was 4-on-4 after SLU got a delay of game penalty after the SHG.

Just one of those games.

No need. Final score: 8-1 Cornell. Not bad for the #9 team against the #10 team. We have a lot of very good, very young players. But they seem to be coming along.

We’ve been spoiled by stellar goaltending for over a dozen years, but this year may be an exception (not to say Fraser was at fault for all the goals). Next year we have the Canadian U-18 goalie coming in, but for now we’ll have to make do.

6-4 Cornell after 2. I was multitasking during the first period [as usual] but since shots, faceoffs, etc. were even I am guessing it was goalie issues. Changed out the netminder for the second period and she only had 4 saves, as Cornell whaled on Dartmouth to score 5 unanswered goals.

Quite a weekend for the Cornell women. Friday, as mentioned in previous post, Cornell overcame a 4-1 deficit (4-2 heading into the 3rd period) to tie an unbeaten Yale team which had only given up 8 goals in its first 8 games. On Saturday afternoon, with a quick turnaround, it was a classic letdown game, and Cornell trailed Brown 2-0 in the second period before Izzy Daniel scored late in the period to cut the lead to 2-1. Cornell then came out flying in the third period, scoring three unanswered goals to pull out a 4-2 win. Brown never got a chance to pull its goalie, as Cornell kept possession of the puck until taking a penalty with 11 seconds left. Cornell's top two lines are really skilled. Counting the two games this weekend, Cornell has had four games this season with huge comebacks.
The goaltending is still shaky, though. We pulled our goalie Friday after she gave up three goals on just 7 shots in first period, and even though Fraser played the entire game today, she didn't look great. The Brown announcers even commented on how she looked shaky and was giving up some juicy rebounds. Cornell will need better play in goal if it wants to make a good postseason run. But this team is fun to watch. Quite entertaining.

A shorthanded Cornell team lost a tough game to No. 1 ranked Ohio State Saturday, 4-3. Due to injuries, Cornell only played four defensemen, and one of our best players, Lily Delianedis, was serving a one-game suspension for an illegal hit in Cornell's last game. Two of our best defensemen, Rory Guilday and Ashley Messier, were out with injuries and it sounds like they won't be back any time soon. Delianedis is our third-leading scorer and she and Messier both have a plus-minus of plus-11. Even so, Cornell played Ohio State tough. OSU took a 2-goal lead and Cornell kept fighting back to cut the lead to one, including an extra-man goal with just over a minute remaining. Cornell had some bad luck on OSU's fourth goal, which came during an OSU powerplay. There was a loose puck in the crease, and one of our players went to clear it just as our goalie came out to cover it up and the puck ended up deflecting off our goalie into the goal for an "own goal."
The teams play a rematch today at 3 p.m. One thing about this year's team is that it never gives up.

Guilday is with Team USA on the West Coast right now but didn't play a few nights ago in Las Vegas, so I wonder what the deal there is. I guess we'll see if she plays Monday in LA.

Women crush Union 7-2.

Hopefully the injury to Frechette isn’t too serious. Losing her along with Guilday and Messier would not be ideal.

The women beat RPI 1-0. Most of our 30 shots were not high-quality but the RPI goalie was the difference in the game, as we outshot them 30-14. Frechette did play and if she was hurting, it didn't seriously affect her performance.

A costly win for the women tonight, 4-1 over Princeton. The starting goalie, Deanna Frasier, had to leave the game after a goalmouth collision. And then one of our best players, Lily Delianedis, had to leave the game after injuring her shoulder/right arm. Neither returned, and we may be missing both of them for Saturday's game against first-place Q. As for the game itself, Princeton scored 19 seconds into the game on the first SOG of the night, but Cornell went ahead 2-1 by the end of the period and added a goal in each of the next two periods. Abi Adams, who scored her first three goals of the season against Union last week, scored again tonight.

Nice bounce-back win against Colgate, 4-2, today after Cornell got smoked in Hamilton on Friday. Colgate (10-3), Cornell (9-4-1) and Clarkson (9-4-1) are in a pretty tight race for the 3-4-5 spots in the ECAC with Quinnipiac (13-2) and Yale (12-1-1) having separated themselves a bit from the pack. Given the remaining schedule, the Red still have a great shot at home ice in the first round of the playoffs and at that point hopefully they'll have some of the injured players back.

It'll help a lot if Penn State keeps playing well and wins the CHA tournament to keep a team from outside the top 11 from taking an autobid. Probably also want to root for Northeastern to get the Hockey East autobid.

The women's team is in a late-season tailspin, with four straight losses and five defeats in the last six games. Cornell lost to Harvard, 7-6, last weekend and then got blown out, 5-1, by last-place Dartmouth, with both games at Lynah. This weekend, in North Country, Cornell lost a showdown for fourth place to Clarkson, 2-1, and then blew a 2-0 third-period lead to St. Lawrence and lost 3-2 in overtime. Only the top 8 teams make the ECAC playoffs, and Cornell is still in fifth place, but home ice for the quarterfinals seems unlikely. Goaltending has been a problem much of the season, as none of the three goalies on the squad have stepped up and taken over the No. 1 role. Hopefully, Coach Derragh can get the team back on track before it's too late. The ECAC is loaded, and Quinninpiac and Yale are both Frozen Four contenders with Colgate (whom we beat a few weeks ago at Lynah) not far behind.

I hadn't looked at the roster page in a while, and it shows that five of the seven players who entered as freshmen in 2020 are listed as sophomores this season. I'd heard that a few players -- notably Gillis Frechette -- didn't enroll during the season when the Ivies didn't play, but I didn't realize it was (apparently) that many. The five who are listed as sophomores: Ashley Messier, Gabbie Rud, Kaitlin Jockims, Lily Delianedis and Claudia Yu. Deanna Fraser and Abby Ruggiero are listed as what is now part of a very small junior class (along with Izzy Daniel, who entered in 2019 and would normally have been a senior this season).

It’s too bad the men didn’t do this. (Or maybe some did, and the roster page doesn’t reflect it.) The men could have had an amazing team next year if Malinski, Berard, Mitchell, etc. came back.

Nice that both men's and women's teams played at home Friday. Cornell women built up a 3-0 lead in the first, gave up a SHG to Brown's Jade Iginla (yes, daughter of Jerome, NHL HOF) in the third, Brown got another, Cornell get the ENG at 19:54 to make it 4-2 final, where the men didn't and so it was 3-2 in the evening.

First win after four losses.

Today Cornell women versus #1 Yale. Good luck, Cornell. Big Red is now 16-7-1 overall.

Not sure where you got Cornell's record, but the Big Red were 13-11-2 going into Saturday's game against No. 1 Yale. Cornell is now 13-12-2 after losing to Yale, 3-2, in overtime.

The five conference tournament champions receive automatic bids, and six teams receive at-large bids. That doesn't look good for Cornell.
"Seeds 6-11 will play a first-round matchup, or regional semifinal, on either Thursday, March 9, or Friday, March 10. The winners will advance to face the first, second and third overall seeds in the second round (regional final) on either Saturday, March 11, or Sunday, March 12. There must be an off day between games for regional semifinal winners. The No. 4 overall seed will play the No. 5 overall seed in the second round as well."
