This is the ECAC men's hockey playoff schedule for 2022. Most likely outcome for Cornell: first weekend off, second weekend host and beat Colgate (best 2 of 3, one bad game is not fatal), third weekend in Lake Placid play Quinnipiac Friday March at 4 p.m.
Notes:
* Quinnipiac, Clarkson Harvard and Cornell are the top 4 seeds. They get the first weekend off.
* The tournament is reseeded after each round so highest plays lowest.
* If top seeds win in the first round then second round:
-- Cornell plays Colgate weekend of March 11-13
-- Cornell plays Quinnipiac 4pm Friday March 18 in Lake Placid. (If a 6-12 team wins a first round series, Q plays not Cornell but someone seeded lower.) Top seed plays early game Friday.
-- Cornell if after 3rd upset of Q Friday, if beats Clarkson Saturday, wins 13th ECAC playoff title, likely the only way to make the NCAAs
* The Lake Placid Olympic ice surface (the big rink, the Miracle on Ice rink, capacity 7,700), has been re-imagined and redone to be a 200x85 NHL surface. If I read correctly, it can be configured either way and for the ECACs it will be 200x85 not 200x100.
* Apropos of Lake Placid's future as a winter sports center, there is talk -- hope? -- that once again Lake Placid would host a Winter Olympics. If it were to happen, Salt Lake City is next up for U.S. site-bidding, and the LP Olympics III backers say such an event might be a joint Lake Placid-Montreal effort, 110 miles distant while China's venues were as much as 140 miles apart. St Lawrence, 26 ECAC points, is hosting Brown, 25 points. Princeton plays at Union.
I failed to mention SLU is also the defending ECAC champion, the entire 2021 ECAC tournament being just two games (was to have been three): St Lawrence over Colgate, Quinnipiac with a bye on account of Clarkson players getting sick, then SLU over Q. See, it is possible to beat Quinnipiac for the ECAC title. Q then went to the NCAAs when St. Lawrence got sick.

Let's see if the Participation Points mattered at all:
I can't speak to (1) the tie breakers if we had used the Right Way, or (2) the official final standings this year, for that matter. It does seem that in normal years the Participation Points will stretch the standings (see the controversial lemma, 3 > 2) and be better for the better teams, so, fine, good for us (hopefully).
In conclusion, fuck Gary Bettman.

Best gate in LP would be Cornell, Clarkson and pick-em. Maybe Quinnipiac with visions of a march to the NCAA title might hire buses but how do they find a conditional block of 40 or 200 rooms that would let them cancel if they got bounced in the quarters? If RPI made it in, they'd draw fans.

Since Dartmouth apparently won the tie breaker vs Yale this begs as to why they pulled their goalie in OT vs Union last night.
I would suspect there was confusion about what the tiebreaker actually was. Even though the first tiebreaker now reads "Comparison of points attained head-to-head" rather than "head-to-head record", it's likely they thought they would lose it since their "head-to-head record" against Yale was 1-1 and Yale would have taken the second tiebreaker on league wins.
But this is the new math, and Yale's win over Dartmouth was in overtime, meaning that Dartmouth won the "comparison of points attained head-to-head", 4-2.

Q is a notorious and historical commuter school, meaning most kids there are a few towns away from the parental laundry machines. An excuse to take a weekend to a resort area hours away where there are bars that are lax at carding. Like a magnet.

Q isn't as much of a commuter school as it used to be. It has built a bunch of new dorms on the hill where the hockey rink is located, and according to the school, 55 percent of the students now live on campus. When I go for bike rides on a rail trail in Hamden, I see many Q students with out of state license plates. Only 27 percent of the students are from CT. It's also interesting that 62 percent of the students are female.RichH

This is good and bad for the males on campus. The bad part: If you strike out there, your case is hopeless.dbilmes
It's also interesting that 62 percent of the [Quinnipiac] students are female.
I'm trying to recall issues around gender-ratio discrepancies. I believe schools are wary of an imbalance past 60-40 because, if it's > 60% female, the women aren't happy with the slimmer pickings. And I believe some schools believe > 60% female has some men believing the school is a women's college that accepts some men. That's decade-old information, though. Also, Q has a school of nursing which historically has been majority female. (But then Cornell Engineering was majority-female as of the Class of 2021. So things change.)

Colgate wins - refs just wanted to go home haha
Certainly looked like the ECAC’s goon of the year took a stick to the head.

Actually, he's the one announcer that I came to dislike this weekend and I listened to all four. To his credit, I'm amazed that he can recall all of that minutia, on the fly, while staying up with the play-by-play. But, to me, it made me weary trying to process all of it and also follow the flow of the game. I ended up muting the tv.

I agree. While I’m impressed with this ability to name every junior program a kid played for on the fly, listening to him can be exhausting. He needs to remember that sometimes “less is more.”

Not just exhausting. I was at the RPI game and only had ESPN+ on for part of the OT on Friday. He was blathering about things that weren't interesting or relevant during OT. He was filling space because there was no color guy and it got annoying really fast for me.
Yet I did enjoy most of his patter during the CU @ Colgate game.

Who has the best chance of taking down a higher seed this weekend (March 11-13), ECAC quarterfinals? Anybody?
St. Lawrence at #1 Quinnipiac
Union at #2 Clarkson
RPI at #3 Harvard
Colgate at #4 Cornell
St. Lawrence really doesn't need room reservations Saturday night in Hamden. Q's only non-wins in the ECAC are:
2-2 tie and 3-1 loss vs. Clarkson
2-1 loss, OT, and 1-0 loss vs. Cornell
1-0 loss vs. Harvard
... so any of the top-four teams perhaps could beat Quinnipiac in a single-game elimination in Lake Placid. St. Lawrence, taking 2 of 3 this weekend?
Union beat Clarkson 4-3 in OT then lost 8-2 in Potsdam.
RPI beat Harvard 2-0 then lost 5-1 in the final weekend.
Colgate as we know too well has a 2-2 tie and 3-2 loss to Cornell.

Hard to see Union taking down Clarkson this weekend. I trust we've learned our lesson from the RS Colgate games, And Cornell the last two weekends of play really stepped up its game. Maybe Cornell and Quinnipiac are the ECAC's two best teams as of season's end. Just don't make us play St. Lawrence.toddlose

Certainly a tall order... but the Saints did pick off Q in Hamden last year for the tourney championship. Admittedly, that was only one game.

Cornell looked like it had so much more energy than Colgate towards the end of tonight’s game. Seeing what happened at Clarkson and Harvard (both winning in OT with Harvard staging a huge comeback in the final minutes), I wouldn’t be surprised if the same thing was true for those teams. Having a bye is such a massive advantage.
I agree that playoff inflation is a bad thing. IMO the fairest thing would be for only the top 4 teams to make the playoffs. But if you’re going to put 8 or 12 teams in the playoffs, the most exciting system is giving the top teams the big reward (byes) to play for during the regular season.

I'm not sure that having the bye was the reason for our energy explosion. I rather think it was a head thing. You could see right after Colgate took the lead, we exploded. After all we out shot them 20-7 in the second period. Although it ended up Colgate 1-0 after 2, we certainly had taken control.
My question was whether the young team could put aside that they hadn't yet scored and come out with the same intensity in the third. I guess they showed me, although Colgate's DiPaolo helped. And you wonder what effect having Coach Schafer behind the bench added.

Grady and Tim did comment that early in the game Cornell was hitting the body hard and that might show as the night wore on.
If that's so we should expect the same tactics tonight.
I think outshooting them 37-10 down the stretch may have been closer than the actual level of dominance. That was some 2003 shit there.

Oh, I have to mention I love the change on the pp. They went super aggressive - very rarely once they got low did they throw it back out to the point. Somebody tough, Andreev or Psenicka usually, would protect the puck with his body and grind inside and then either fire it or dish it in front. We had a TON of great chances on this and we also used the extra man effectively to win a lot of the battles for the loose puck after and then put it right back on Benson or set up and fire from the circles.
It was such a dramatic change from all year. I'm not sure whether they would dare try it against somebody like Clarkson with their explosive counterattack.
