Women's hockey 2022

The women's team has been flying under the radar with its slow start, but they had a solid effort today, beating Dartmouth, 5-0, despite dressing only four defensemen. It was the 300th career win for Doug Darragh, who will be leaving the team for the rest of the regular season as he joins the Team Canada coaching staff for the Olympics. Cornell scored in the first 30 seconds of each period, and Browning got her 17th career shutout. The win avenged a 4-3 loss at Dartmouth earlier in the season.

I thought they said Derraugh would be around through next weekend? Maybe I misheard. Anyway, the Dartmouth game is the only one this weekend since Harvard has covid issues.

Cornell scored in the 1st minute of all three periods. Does anyone recall either the men’s or women’s team ever having done that before?

Very nice 4-0 win over Clarkson tonight. Nine points for the top line of Frechette, Daniel and Delianedis, and all 3 had a goal. Cornell was outshot 35-19 but Browning had a great game in goal and the Red put away their chances. Cornell now tied for 7th with Princeton and will play the Tigers on Friday.

Not that I panicked, but it's not often you see the Cornell men not in the top 20 and at worst Also Receiving Votes. No Cornell women this week in polls but the ECAC schools are 6-10: H, Q, Y, Colgate, Clarkson. Bleeping Ohio State is at No. 4. Probably built a women's hockey dorm to help recruiting. $300M sportsing budget in Columbus. For that money, Cornell could have built the North Campus Residential Initiative (the new dorms) twice over.

I wonder if the odds are higher for the Cornell women to hoist the NCAA trophy sooner than the men.

3-2 win over #7 Colgate today. Glad someone can beat Colgate.

Cornell has 5 RS ECAC games left and an outside shot at home ice in the playoffs, though the 3 key games against Colgate, Clarkson and St. Lawrence are all on the road. Home games against RPI and Union this coming weekend, plus a game against Penn State on Tuesday. The game against Syracuse from the fall was still listed as postponed the last time I looked, but at this point I’m not sure when they’d fit it in.

I had anticipated being able to fulfill this hope for the men's team too. Unfortunately, injuries and illness have caused the team to take two steps back for every step forward this year. But hope springs eternal ....

In the women’s game especially, goaltending wins games. Lindsay Browning an absolute rock for the Red.

Would love to see the Women's ECACs be played at Placid alongside the Men's. Grow the appreciation of the game, get more fans' butts in seats, and also make the conference title more of an event.

I agree, but you’d need to shift the entire NCAA schedule to do this. The women’s NCAA tournament is underway the weekend of the men’s conference championships. That said, there has been discussion of holding the men’s and women’s basketball Final Fours at the same location so maybe they could align the hockey schedules.

Colgate scores with :16 seconds left in the 1st OT. Colgate had most of the pressure in the OT, and with out top 2 lines playing most of the minutes we looked worn out.

Browning played a great game in goal for us. She got lucky, though, earlier in the OT when a Colgate shot hit the post. Tough way to lose with so few seconds left in OT period. There were a bunch of Colgate students (all male) at the game wearing their speedos. I don't know if it was their men's swim team or just a bunch of frat guys.

I think that other Colgate sports teams were at the game -- I saw a bunch of guys in football sweatshirts and tees along with the "swimmers."

Virtually all of the offensive production will be back next season, so that’s a good start. If the team can get more scoring threats on the second and third lines next season they should take a nice step up.

Looks as if the ECAC is rolling out all-league honors a day at a time, in case it's too much to digest otherwise. Cornell is nicely representated among rookies and the third team. So far.

Guilday (Fr. - Chanhassen, Minn.) tied for the lead among rookie defenseman in scoring during league play, registering 14 points on five goals and nine assists. She registered points in 14 games, scoring two power play goals, and two game-winning goals. She also blocked 63 shots, including eight during the opening weekend of the season when she was named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week.

Frechette (Jr. - Weston, Mass.) led ECAC Hockey skaters in scoring during league games by a wide margin, recording 36 of her 40 total points against ECAC Hockey opponents. She found the back of the net 10 times and dished out 26 assists, finishing with a +25 on-ice rating for the Big Red. She was consistent throughout the year, finding the scoresheet in 18 of 22 league contests, which included 12 multi-point performances. Three of her 10 goals were game-winners, which was good for second in the conference.

Browning (Sr. - Penfield, N.Y.) is certainly no stranger to ECAC Hockey honors, as the Big Red net minder earned First-Team honors and was named Goaltender of the Year in 2020. She had another strong showing this year, starting in all 22 league games while pacing ECAC Hockey netminders with 12 wins in net. She finished the year with 551 saves, boasting a .924 save percentage.

This means 27 percent of the women's teams made the tourney, similar to the men. While the ECAC will most likely only have 1 or 2 ECAC teams in this year's men's NCAA tourney, 5 of the 11 teams in the women's NCAA tourney are from the ECAC. None of them are favored, though, to win it all. The highest seeds from the ECAC are Colgate (4) and Yale (5), who play each other in the quarterfinals in a rematch of the ECAC championship game, meaning one ECAC team is assured of reaching the Frozen Four. In any case, it will be interesting to see if any of the ECAC teams can beat someone from outside the conference in the tournament.

Time to fact-check billhoward again. Colgate has never had a Hobey winner. Austin Smith was one of the 3 finalists in 2012, but didn't win. Only one ECAC school ever gets that award, and they've done it four times. They must have a good PR department.

Well given how dominant the US team was last night, it seems we'd rather have more of them than the Canadians this year.

According to a poster on the USCHO board, this is a down year for Canada perhaps in part because they decided to take more players from outside of Ontario than usual to create more geographic diversity. Also speculation that the lack of team practices for much of the pandemic is a factor. I guess the US team kept on going.

More USA-American women on the Cornell team, then we can be happy no matter whether Canada or USA takes Olympic gold.

As far as I can tell, this is the most commits Cornell has had on a Canadian U18 team since 2008 (Lauriane Rougeau, Laura Fortino, Brianne Jenner, Chelsea Karpenko, Amanda Mazzotta and Catherine White). And Rebecca Johnston was a freshman and already on the senior national team at that point. I don't think Cornell has ever had 2 commits on the U.S. U18 team in the same season?

This raises a really good question: What are the odds that Cornell's next NC in a major team sport will be in:

a. Men's Hockey
b. Women's Hockey
c. Men's Lacrosse
d. Women's Lacrosse
e. Men's Basketball
f. Women's Basketball
etc.

That year, Fortino and Rougeau formed a freshmen defensive pairing that lasted four years here (and beyond for Team Canada). I can imagine that MacEachern and Regalado might form such a defensive pairing starting next year. They have both featured prominently thus far at the U18's.

I’d say women’s hockey 1st with men’s lacrosse a close 2nd (largely because there are fewer competitive D1 women’s hockey teams), then men’s wrestling and men’s hockey 3rd/4th in either order. No other “major” Cornell team (so I’m excluding crew and polo) is anywhere in the picture for a NC.

Polo wins like every year.

But of those I think it has to be Men's Lacrosse and then Women's Hockey. They are the only ones who are close. Men's Hockey might sometime in my lifetime, Lord hear our prayer.

I had no idea Women's Lacrosse was a varsity sport until this very second.

Canada beats the US 3-2 for the gold. Prefontaine had an assist in the win.
