I was surprised no one started a thread for the game tonight. In any case, we played an excellent third period, as Schafer's move to put Berard on a line with Andreev and Steinberg paid off. The St. Lawrence announcer did his best but apparently was unaware that Steinberg's great play to score an empty-net goal gave him a hat trick. I saw one of his teammates retrieve the puck after that goal and skate it over to the Cornell bench, and I was wondering what the significance of the goal was. Then I saw after the game that Steinberg had scored a hat trick in the third period. At least the St. Lawrence announcer credited our pep band with being the best in the Northeast.
The real test of the first half of the season comes Saturday night against Clarkson.

Yep, that was odd when the announcer said Stienberg had 2 goals yet the puck was pulled out of the net and escorted to the Cornell bench.

St. Lawrence video was like Lynah video in the days before ESPN: the camera jockeys didn't or couldn't follow the puck, several goals were missed (on two goals, I think we saw the puck flash by and go in because the end zone camera was aimed at the goal but we didn't see the setup), the arena lighting is uneven, and red-line camera is mounted even lower than at Lynah. On the plus side, SLU at least briefly shows views from cameras above the two goals and the center faceoff spot.

With McDonald playing in goal vs. St. Lawrence, the lesser weekend opponent, if Howe starts Saturday at Clarkson, it cements Howe's status as the top goalie, not counting people playing at Notre Dame.

Very nice third period effort. Partway through the second, it seemed possible that SLU could pull off an upset. Didn't happen. Upset did happen in Providence, where Brown took down Harvard 2-0. (And that home and home series is now done for the year.)

Well, with Trotsky going out all over town with his new forum mistress, Reddit, what hope do we have?

Honestly, I rather enjoyed the broadcaster. He had to juggle radio, TV, intermission, color, interviews, sponsors, and tugging at his mask all alone. Wouldn’t surprise me to learn he was also running the board. Seriously, he wasn’t your typical homer and complimented (and criticized) CU fairly all night.

I saw the SLU goal coming. Nobody except Steinburg was even moving on the kill before it got in. The Larries could pick their spot.

After I heard the shot totals for the 2nd, I had a good feeling we were wearing them down.

I’m running out of hats. Wow. I’m starting to be impressed.

While it’s a quite pleasant place to be in person, Appleton is by far my least favorite venue for television, bad camera work excluded. I can never tell what’s going on around the net.

Good to hear the Brent Brekke expiring penalty whistle again. I had forgotten he was there. Perhaps relatedly, this was one of the harder hitting SLU teams I’ve seen. Given the current coach, perhaps that’s a permanent change.

Like guilt's gonna keep a man at home. You might at least put on a nicer dress, Rich.

I agree completely. The guy was very good, he ran the whole show (and had to be on camera at intermission), and yet he called a fair game and was complimentary, and he knew the rosters. Anyone who remembers what SLU's crew was like a decade ago knows their evolution has been such a leap that a monolith must have appeared one morning in a snow drift outside the Canton Pizza Hut.

The video production was indeed terrible. But with ESPN’s recent multi-year commitment, I suppose we can expect it will only trend upwards (or possibly sideways?), but at least not downwards.

I was getting mad because he attributed Stienburg's second goal to Andreev from the time it was scored. Buddy, the guy who scored is at the front of the handshake line! I went to the stat tracker to make sure I wasn't going insane.

From the run of play I figured once Cornell broke through the floodgates would open. I like watching this team.

Technically, we're 4 2/3 games above .500.

Fuck that noise. We're 6-1-0 12 points and anybody who says different is a low down scallywag.

That’s how I was feeling as the game got late into the second period, that a Cornell goal was coming and St. L would be done. I, too, like watching this team, more than I had hoped for going into the season.

I thought the control on the PP was good and I like the slot one timer setup they try with Berard.

Stienburg got the goals but Andreev controlled the third period. One thing about a higher gear offense: when they do have a squeaker against a weaker, there's more margin for error.

During the brief postgame the SLU PBP guy did correct himself and note that Stienberg got the hat trick.

Late in the first period during one of the innumerable and lengthy puck battles along the boards I thought to myself, “SLU may not have a lot of talent but boy is their compete level many times greater than I saw from BU.” Moments later the St. Lawrence PBP guy (who was pretty solid) commented how strong the Saints compete level was throughout the period.

While I was a bit concerned down 1-0 with our inability to get many quality chances, you could begin to sense that our relentlessness was about to pay off, as we had better and more sustained offensive zone time. Once we tied it up it seemed just a matter of time before we took over the game, and once we got the lead to start the 3rd that was pretty much all she wrote.

I thought the first half of the game was just choppy all over. puck was bouncing, lots of hitting very little connected passing.. once we generated any forecheck in the 2nd it was over for game play the question was would it lead to goals and it did.

Wasn't that attempt from the slot with Berard last night the exact play Andreev scored on last week at MSG? Assuming so, it was executed perfectly both times. (SLU's goalie just got a little luckier.)

This must be fun to practice. They seem to have both the timing and the snipers.
