It doesn't appear that audio is available. I tried the Cornell schedule link (failed) and the WHCU We Interrupt This Political Fucktard link (says it's running but zero audio).

Penney (Betts)
Psenicka (Stienburg, Andreev)
Penney put in a rebound after a Betts rush.
Andreev along the boards makes a short pass to Stienburg in the faceoff circle who quickly passes to Psenicka in the slot.

The 2nd goal was very pretty. Great work along the board and a two quick, on target passes.

Psenicka is impressive. And he’s quick! Very rapidly becoming my favorite frosh. Penney gets to a ton of pucks—so many that he starts to infuriate other teams. Nice rush by Kempf there at one point. Very Jason Dailey one man team!

Solid win.

While the crowd size is disappointing, we’re rocking compared with Colgate—there was an announced crowd of 350 in Hamilton for the RPI game last night.

What is the most popular explanation for this? Fear of catching COVID? Easier to just watch on tv these days?

For RPI, WHCU has broken in on its normal neo-Nazi programming to broadcast the pregame audio.

Why dont the students keep singing after the Gary glitter song to start the 3rd period anymore? Need that back.

At best, 50% of the undergrads have EVER gone to a game before this season. The natural hand-off of leadership over the Faithful in section B has been disrupted. Us seniors who went to most/all of the games our frosh and soph years are working on bringing people back up to speed, but most of us barely remember these things.

With that said, each night so far has been an improvement in volume and coordination (although last night was honestly a step back, with some pretty stupid chants regarding a certain Seaman).

Same. It didn't happen. Not complaining. I'll be happy with whatever they play if we score 10+.
I'll add that Arthur was on his game with some nice vocal change in announcing that expressed the specialness as the score got larger and with the Andreev hatty.

Not sure what "Davy in 3" is, but I'm somewhat surprised you could hear much of the band on the broadcast at all. By the end of the game I think they were up to ten or twelve people, including, I believe, one trumpet, one trombone, one sax, and one tuba, but they started the game shorter than that, and without a trumpet player. They did not get to play the anthems tonight and the first time they played Davy it was barely recognizable, probably due to the lack of brass.

The band would play Davy in 3/4 tempo if we scored a bunch of goals, just to be different.

FWIW, it appears that the last time RPI gave up as many as 11 goals was on 2/22/86 in an 11-0 loss to Harvard, the year after winning the NCAA championship. Conceivably my eyes missed a more recent game.

Edit: RPI also lost 11-0 to Clarkson on 11/22/97.

At the rink in section L we could hear the band but often felt we were playing "Name That Tune" with ear protection. Hope their numbers get back to normal.

The crowd numbers too, but will note the video camera is showing the townie side of the rink and sections A through E were much more filled.

We were wondering if perhaps the backup goalie was nursing some injury that they didn't want to risk aggravating.

After one of the second period goals my daughter saw Marshall say something to one of his players who then skated to the bench and spoke to the coach who seemed to say no. We're thinking Marshall may have been asking to come out.

Would love to know why he was left in.

you could put 2 and 2 together.

the team is generating pretty solid chances so far.. Hopefully some of the sloppy stuff in our own end gets cleaned the next few weeks. Some of it is not just taking the clean play when it presents itself. We scored 11 and probably had good chances for 2-3 more but we also could have allowed 2-3 more with the mistakes we made. Almost shot one in our own net in the 2nd as well.

Jason mentioned that Harvard would gain 2 points last night with a shoot out win to be determined after the Cornell broadcast ended.

Harvard won the shoot out over St Lawrence but CHN still shows them with 10 points which is only one more than they had before last night's game. But Jason is correct as the ECAC site shows them with 11 points.

Sucks to be trailing Harvard by 2 and Sucks that a shootout gives them that extra point.

blowing the 2 goal lead and not getting the game to OT is a 3 pt swing. Winning it we would be 3pts up with games in hand. getting to OT and losing we would be tied with games in hand.

Need to play well this weekend and then the north country trip we always dread in a few weeks will decided how we stand after the first half of the season,.

Need to play well this weekend and then the north country trip we always dread in a few weeks will decided how we stand after the first half of the season,.

Yale and Brown have not played well so far, and we need to punish them for that. deadhorse

Coming to Lynah is going to be, I think, quite disorienting for teams who don't have many (if any) fans at home games this season and/or who didn't play last year. Also, I can't be the only one to have noticed the reflection created by the glare of the new video board off the glass at the opposite end of the rink. Opposing goalies have one more reason to hate our ice.

The worrisome games are road games, mostly, but that's not news nor is it universal. We always seem to play well at Clarkson, probably because it's one of the few rinks that approximates our atmosphere. SLU, on the other hand… That's one of the games I worry about every year. I suppose every fan has a list. Clarkson fans hate Lynah; the Harvard fan hates seeing Clarkson anywhere. Mine is:

Brown Away Just Meehan's general lack of atmosphere. If Brown were any better, it'd be a problem.
Dartmouth Away This is known and legendary.
Princeton Away When we lived there, I saw us give away so many games…
Quinnipiac Home QU always comes in with a chip on their shoulder.
RPI Home Last night notwithstanding, I've seen plenty of give aways to RPI over the years.
SLU H/A Hate playing SLU anywhere, always.
Union Away Every once in a while, we just seem to get BTFO in Messa. I remember one where we had 9 shots all game.

After the Alaska series, I would’ve told you it would take us 8 games to total 11 goals given how stagnant our offense looked that weekend. We’ve come a long way in a short time.

Pretty late in the third period, when the game was long-since decided, Andreev went down to successfully block a hard shot and actually came up a little lame. That said a lot!

After the Alaska series, I would’ve told you it would take us 8 games to total 11 goals given how stagnant our offense looked that weekend. We’ve come a long way in a short time.
In 2015 and 2016 we scored 45 and 46 goals in the 22-game ECAC season.

How the turntables.

Of course that’s when Schafer did the recruiting reboot to bring in more skilled players, and the results speak for themself.

I was listening for Davy in 3 after the 10th goal, and it didn't sound like it. Has the band forgotten about that (no lacrosse since the current seniors were freshmen), or was it just too hard to hear on the broadcast?

Not sure what "Davy in 3" is, but I'm somewhat surprised you could hear much of the band on the broadcast at all. By the end of the game I think they were up to ten or twelve people, including, I believe, one trumpet, one trombone, one sax, and one tuba, but they started the game shorter than that, and without a trumpet player. They did not get to play the anthems tonight and the first time they played Davy it was barely recognizable, probably due to the lack of brass.

Was the marching band in Hanover for the football game? That would have depleted the ranks of the pep band.

Absolutely. In his first 21 years (96-16), his teams produced 11 hat tricks. In the 4.2 years since (17-22), they have 9.

Perhaps Sean Flanagan's found a bit of an edge in finding and developing offensive talent?

I've always assumed Syer was brought in to teach our D how to be mobile on offense, i.e., to become part of the cycle and not just camp out around the perimeter, or to become like—hate to say it—the Quinnipiac D had been for some time. An upgrade on strategy that, to his great credit, I think that Schafer figured out had to happen yet that he also had found difficult to bring to fruition himself.

(Not meant to be a significant critique on Schafer. He's clearly a great defensive fundamentals coach for defensemen and forwards. Way back when, we pep bandies snuck into practice one day only to find Schafer teaching how to pin guys against the boards without drawing penalties. His explanation was perfect and clear, and his technique was subtle and powerful. You could see the change in the ('96) team immediately. I assume this applies to all facets of the game. But, you know, he was a defenseman and played four decades ago now! The smart old dog knows he's got to learn new tricks.)

Now, not to knock Topher, but since Flanagan came along it seems that the forwards have figured out something that I find difficult to describe. They seem to be able to change their angle-of-attack off the cycle much better than they used to. I'm not a hockey strategist beyond the very basics, but we seem to be able to attack from any of the four corners of the offensive zone now, rather than just from the points. It's not just creativity exactly; rather, it seems like an offensive package has been installed that allows creativity to happen. I don't know. I find it difficult to describe. (The one missing element to me seems to be the ability to create offense from behind the net, but that's always been a tough one to teach in Lynah, where there just isn't much room at all. It's the Vesce/Bâby little guys/unusual big guys skill. The last player I remember being able to do that was… … wait for it… Topher! I have great hopes for Psenicka.)

Now if we could just find someone to install the perfect power play…

Remember too that Schafer changed because the game changed around him. The style of play we are seeing now depends on puck handlers being able to open the ice up without being wrapped up, dragged down, or cross checked into the boards. The type of players we are getting now might not have been as effective under the Old World Order.

BTW, do people think Haiskanen has regressed or that the other players have simply gotten so much better he has been surpassed? I barely notice him out there now.

Fact is our prior style of play is no longer tenable because we’d be sitting in the penalty box for 10 minutes each period based on the way the game is called.

Regarding Haiskenan, he hasn’t been as impactful as I expected, but I imagine he’ll become more of a force as the season progresses.

I assume by "Brett Wilson" you mean Brett Miller, who was the backup goalie listed on the RPI roster in the game program and on the line chart.

I heard, but could not confirm, that the backup goalie had some sort of illness and was unfit to play. If that's so (and as I said, I couldn't confirm it), why would you allow a player who is ill to dress and spend the game on the bench, especially in this age of COVID?

If you hear any explanation from Coach Smith, please pass it along.

I don't think he's regressed. I think he wasn't that good to begin with.

Same. It didn't happen. Not complaining. I'll be happy with whatever they play if we score 10+.
I'll add that Arthur was on his game with some nice vocal change in announcing that expressed the specialness as the score got larger and with the Andreev hatty.

I think they also neglected the 8-goal cheer. (Though I remember that cheer ending with "gee, that sucks" or something like that.

Don't recall bringing up Weder...though I did mention that the students were chanting "We want Miller" (or so I perceived with my 30+ year broadcast-impaired hearing) for RPI back-up Brett Miller after the score was well out of hand. Though like my hearing, my memory could be going as well and I might have said "Weder".

The students are coming through quite well on the broadcasts—surprisingly well, considering the masks and such. Nothing better for us folks listening in than to hear a loud, engaged student section taking up the background of the audio. And this next weekend, with the football team back in town, section A should be at full strength.

Tim Vanini's side of the audio can get strangely quiet, occasionally. Don't know if it's a mixing issue or if he perhaps leans back from his mic every once in while.

Really, everything is fantastic, including the interplay between play-by-play and color that already sounds like it's been going on for years. Although my handle has my later graduation year on it, my townie-era fandom goes back to Tim's freshman year. (Saw Nieuwendyk and Schafer play in fall '85—don't really remember it.) He was and is a crowd favorite.

Historical digressions are to be encouraged! (For example, the current #4 is really putting me in mind of Chris Norton.)

I agree with your assessment. I think the students were terrific this weekend; they certainly had a lot to cheer about. And Grady and Vannini have a nice rapport, especially considering Vannini was a late addition to the broadcast team.

If you had told me in 2005 that we would have every Cornell hockey game streaming via ESPN on the internet, with Grady doing the play-by-play for the games at Lynah, you would have had to get out the smelling salts to revive me before getting to the part about TimV doing color. We really have a sweet broadcasting setup right now.

You didn't bring up Weder himself but I thought you brought up the Weder QF series in 1996 (when we scored 8 goals twice.) I've been corrected that you brought up a previous Colgate QF series, 1991, where we scored 10 and 8 (and that Vanini played in, when I was still in college).

Marshall is a grad student who lost the starting goalie job three seasons ago to Owen Savory. He has started all but one game this year. Watson, a freshman, started the other. BTW, he was a teammate of Joe Howe in Coquitlam two seasons ago. He gave up 3 goals in that game which he lost in overtime. Wilson is a sophomore who, of course, didn't play last year. Although it is possible that both Wilson and Watson have injuries, it is more likely that Watson does since he has played one game and seemed to me to be the better one in juniors.

The reason that Coach Smith didn't remove Marshall, who wasn't that good on Friday vs. Colgate either, is a mystery. Hopefully, the RPI Red Army will ask Coach Smith that question on their podcast this week. [podcasts.apple.com]

My error. It is indeed Miller.

I did confirm that Coach Smith will be asked why he did not switch goalies on the RPI Red Army's podcast late in the week.

It was reported by an RPI fan whose daughter is an RPI student and apparently knows team members that both Miller and Watson are injured.

Pretty much an open only in case of emergency thing for the other goalie.

Completely agree. At the risk of not leaving the compliment implicit, Grady is the voice in my head when I watch Cornell games:

"Chartrand takes the puck, skates past a defenseman, crosses the red line, around another, takes it in and SCORES!!! Shorthanded!"

My trombone flies out of hands as I leap to my feet. Since more than half of the pep band is wearing headphones and listening to the game, we start cheering wildly in the middle of a foul shot. (I have no recollection as to why we hadn't made the trip, but we often had to torture ourselves at a basketball game when we didn't.)

We lost the game in the end, but that call still rings in my ears.

When was the last time CU scored 8 goals in a game

Prior to tonight:

 8 3/9/18
 9 3/9/18
10 11/20/99
11 2/21/79
12 2/4/78
13 1/14/78
14 11/25/75
15 11/25/75
16 1/27/68
17 1/27/68
18 1/27/68
19 1/27/68

After tonight:

 8 11/13/21
 9 11/13/21
10 11/13/21
11 11/13/21
12 2/4/78
13 1/14/78
14 11/25/75
15 11/25/75
16 1/27/68
17 1/27/68
18 1/27/68
19 1/27/68

I was surprised not to hear a simple cheer that was common in the sixties: "One, Two, Three, ..., <current score> ... We want more!!!"

Maybe my aged hearing didn't pick this up from the broadcast, or maybe the cheer is too simplistic for today's sophisticated students. But I was still surprised not to hear it.

My recent experience is that they rush through the counting in order to get to "It's all your fault!"

Yes. Was much more powerful back when it was a slow cadence

In regard to RPI not changing goalies, I am surprised as much, if not more so, than the Cornell posters here. The same thought was posted by many on the game thread on USCHO.

This is the Podcast. At about the 6:00 Mark Coach Smith is asked why neither of the other goalies played. He is vague saying they weren't eligible then correcting himself that they were eligible but weren't able to play due to other things he wasn't talking about. It sounds to me like a disciplinary problem, but it could be injuries, or academics, or most anything else.

Any we-want-more counting cheer now needs to be shorter than the average TikTok shuffle dance.

Brown tonight is such an obvious trap game. We really need to get off to a good start.
