Rewatching old games

During my morning elliptical session I’m watching old games I have recorded on DVD. Today I watched our 3-2 win over Northeastern in the 2009 Midwest Regional in Grand Rapids. That team really had just one productive line (Nash-Greening-Barlow) and not much skill otherwise. It was painful watching our abysmal passing, and at times Northeastern kept us pinned in our zone for minutes at a time. But somehow we gutted it out and Barlow scored a magical goal with 17 seconds left.
A few other observations: two excellent goaltenders with Scrivens and Thiessen. While Thiessen was the more highly touted guy at the time, Scrivens of course had a much more successful pro career. Also a decade ago the game was much more physical than today, and guys got away with things that today might get them a 5 minute major. Ironically our game tying PP goal came after a super soft hitting from behind call with about 5 minutes left where the Norteastern player basically pushed our guy down in the neutral zone.
As I compared the 2008-09 Cornell team to this year’s team, there really is no comparison. The 2019-20 squad would’ve skated circles around the 08-09 version. So much more skill, and much more enjoyable to watch. Maybe I’m being overly harsh, but I don’t think more than 5 forwards from the 08-09 team would’ve cracked the lineup now, and I had trouble picking a single defenseman from then who was better than our regular 6 d-men today.

Thanks for posting. I was there and it felt great re-living the euphoria of the moment. Before the game I was talking to an Ottawa scout and trying to talk up Barlow to him. I think I really wanted to distract him from Greening, hoping he wouldn't interfere with Greening staying for his senior year. I told the scout that every season Barlow was a lot better than the previous season, which I truly believed. The scout looked at has line sheet and said something about Evan's small size and I said you would have liked to have Brian Gionta, wouldn't you. Evan had some good years in the ECHL and one okay AHL season (30 points in 57 games). I just googled Evan Barlow and found this recent article:

There were easily 200 of us at Ship of Fools that night, and the place went absolutely batshit berserk at the tying and winning goals. I like to think that with as many mutual friends as we had, dss28 and I would've eventually met anyway, but without those two goals we certainly wouldn't have both been at Ship of Fools the next night.

As I watch other games I’ll be posting my thoughts on those.
