Another game, another 5 minute major and game misconduct for Cornell, midway through the first, on Mitchell. We've argued that these were weak calls. But we're getting called too much. Got to play within the rules as the ECAC and NCAA see them.

[edit add:] Noah Bauld draws a 5 + 10 eight minutes into the third and the scored tied at 2. Sheesh.

Saw Andreev skate around a bit at the end of the period there. Looked pretty normal.

I told my parents that I'd paid for season tickets and didn't want to waste them.

I think they bought it.

Classes start Tuesday, right? And rush is going on, which will bring a good number back.

as a fan who never played... what is the responsibility of the offensive player there
maybe I just dont know what to look for, but it seemed like the NMU skater tried to reverse direction along the wall and bauld had no chance to pull up without out contacting him from behind

Not hard to imagine we were playing Clarkson, and it wasn’t just the green and gold sweaters. Whatever happens tomorrow, NMU is a great tune-up for the rest of the season.

Quite right. Our non-conference schedule has been strong, which especially helps in a year where the ECAC is a bit down.

2-2 Friday night. Never led. A tie in each of the last three weekends. Three games is a pretty short trend line. Extend out to four weekends and we're 3-1-3 with Saturday yet to play. Also too many major penalties and ejections.

Still the best team in 17 years. And the 12-1-3 record is mostly away from Lynah. And not clobbered by injuries.

Last year's team may have been the best team in 16 years had it not been clobbered by injuries.

thought there were a couple long stretches were we really dominated.. NK has some quick kids and that caused some issues at times.

the PP created a bunch of really good chances we need to put more of those home.
the PK was pretty solid a couple of one timers but not much in the really dangerous areas

we cycled well for a while. the NM goalie played well but we didnt put home most of the really good chances and the extended PK and loss of 2 players in the rotation probably added up.

I mentioned on the Slack chat that we seemed to revert to the bad old days of the “gang that can’t shoot straight” by missing the cage on numerous shots.

Also, Kaldis seems to have become allergic to taking a shot. He’s always been a pass-first guy, but he had a few really good looks from the top of the slot on the PP that he passed up.

gonna be dicey heading to the game today. 2-8 inches of snow depending on the forecast you have to drive thru, those of us coming from north of the city more snow, those down in the city more sleet and ice. lots of flights cancelled so kids trying to get to campus the last day or 2 from the midwest probably seeing trouble,

If that's how NMU plays on a regular basis, then they would be a BYE team in the ECAC this year. And they were missing one of their better players.

I'm fine with this, because Kaldis, for all his usefulness, has one of the least effective slapshots of any offensive defenseman we've ever had. Every once in a while he can snap something in, but it's rare. Looking back, we haven't had an effective goal-scoring defenseman since Ryan, and we haven't had an effective power-play shooter since Charlie Cook, in my opinion. We haven't had a sniper since Mark McRae; Murray was more of a bomber.

Kaldis also needs to stop dangling the puck one-handed when entering the offensive zone and clear with authority on the kill. The latter is something I saw from others last night and may have been a point of emphasis in practices, but Kaldis still created a couple of "moments." I don't know if he's injured or something, but his play has been—I don't know—kind of "flat." He's being more than a little lax with the puck. Maybe he's just tired.

I think Green needs to shoot more. He set off an absolute bomb from way out last night that almost beat Kent. And where has Joe Leahy been? He played that one game and scored that pretty goal, but the seventh defenseman has been Cairns ever since.

I don't remember Ned Harkness rationalizing any performances by his teams, and I can't remember any fans of his teams doing so. If you get beat the other team was better. If you tie the other team was just as good as you.

Weren't you looking for an explanation as to our mental weakness when we dropped a game to Dartmouth?

Cairns seems to have settled down as a dependable 19. I'm not complaining, though Leahy has shown that nice offensive touch in his few games, which could have been useful.

I think Leahy may simply be exploitable by good teams and we've played a string of them. We may see him again with SLU, Brown, Yale, and Princeton.

That's kind of my sense. He's a step—only one—behind, but he has a bigger offensive upside than Cairns. Big shot, if I'm remembering correctly. I just wondered if he was injured.

Which kind? Crafty goal-scorer or power-play shooter/sniper? If I'm recalling what I've seen of Malinski properly so far, he doesn't seem to have a huge shot but tends not to bash it into blockers—a fine profile as far as I'm concerned. Also seems pretty mobile, but I haven't seen him ranging down low as much lately. Probably has to do with the quality of the competition.

NMU is fearless and reckless with their speed. Just using their bodies as projectiles, if that’s what’s needed. It makes me a little scared of injuries tonight, to be honest. We dodged a couple bad injuries last night, and our getting caught up in flying bodies led to the two majors, if you ask me.

I follow Adam on twitter, and he’s getting apoplectic about the trend of officials reviewing for majors when nothing is initially called, and I have to say, I’m coming around to that point of view. It’s getting ridiculous.

As last night's game crept towards three hours, I laughed thinking of the "speed up the game" effort around the 2002 Olympics. 15 seconds from whistle to draw and games at 2:00-2:05. Media timeouts help lengthen the game but the reviews are total momentum killers.

really felt like both the hits that went uncalled on them for knee shots were worse than both majors we got.. one of ours i get it was along the boards and we knocked the kid in the other not really sure it was something that doesnt go uncalled 10x a game.

there are multiple refs for a reason and if they both dont see even a penalty live on plays around the puck then what are they there for.. if they want to confirm a major from a minor at least they saw something.

different if its on calls away from the puck
