I missed most of the first period, but Cornell got a pretty dominant 7-0 win over Harvard today. No box score yet, but I’m pretty sure the top line had zero points today. Really great to have this kind of depth.

After the women played two uninspired games in the Capital District last weekend, it was quite a different story back at Lynch, especially yesterday’s 7-0 demolition of a solid Harvard team. Like the men the women sit at #3 in the pairwise.

From a USAToday article on the NHL All-star event:

"The women's 3-on-3 was a smashing success as a new event. Canada beat the U.S 2-1 as Rebecca Johnston and Melodie Daoust silenced “U-S-A! U-S-A!" chants with a goal apiece, and Ann Renee Desbiens was the biggest star with 18 saves."

Watching the ESPN+ feed of Cornell at Colgate. The Raiders look like they are wearing 70s Phillies powder blue unis. Cornell up 2-zip and dominating midway through the first.

I watched it on TV. Johnston's goal was a nice shot. Turned on the speed and got past her defender on a breakaway. Definite goal scorers goal. Fortino also played well.

For a team hovering around .500 SLU looked pretty good. They seem to have a very good freshman class, so they’ll likely be a threat the next few years.

ENG to make the final 3-0. Posted stats say shots were 39-13 but that doesn't reflect the time of possession. Dartmouth also had 26 blocked shots to Cornell's 7.

It was somewhat humorous how the Dartmouth announcers were praising Dartmouth’s performance. No offense to them, but in the roughly 50% of the game that I watched, they didn’t come close to sniffing a goal.

I get it, though. Playing the national #2 they expected a blow out. Props to them for keeping it respectable.

The women are getting overlooked because of the men's start, but this is a great team. (21-1-3). Only Wisco (26-2-1) is comparable. F4 is in Boston; I'd love to see them matched up in front of a pro-Cornell crowd.

Went to the women's game yesterday - my very first women's hockey game ever. It's a very different style game than the men's game.

In the women's game, because of the "no checking" it's a lot more stick work on defense. In the men's game, you just bull your way through the defense. There also seemed to be a lot fewer scrums in the corners in the women's game. It leads to more passing, more skating, and a more fluid game with lots of cycling.

I also noticed a lot of difference in our goalies' styles. On dump-in shots on net, Galajda knocks the puck down in front of him, and then plays it with his stick to a teammate. Browning uses her blocker to simply deflect the puck into the corner for a teammate to pick it up. I wonder if that's because of her experience playing with the boys in HS. It gave her faster reflexes, and since the women's shots aren't quite as fast as the men's, she has that extra split second to react.

Of course, the fact that it was 3-0 before you could blink made it a lot more relaxing than the men's game, too :-D

St. Lawrence scores an EAG to make it 3-2, and the women make a few boneheaded plays at the end, but take game two. Cornell was the better team, but St. Lawrence has some terrific freshmen and will be a team to watch the next few years.

The only game I've seen was several years ago and it was a dilly, the 8-7 triple overtime win over BU in the 2012 ECAC final! [cornellbigred.com] The photo heading the article caught me standing in the front row on the far left, clapping over my head. I'm in red and my wife's in white.
I remember thinking that the stick work was crisper than in the men's games (typically at MSG), and wondering whether that might be because there was not as big a concern about getting clobbered.

How do they manage 3 visiting teams given the locker room shortage?

According to this, Lynah has 6 locker rooms.

I think that includes the ones for officials and the women’s lacrosse team, so that leaves 2 at most for visiting hockey teams.

I thought I dimly remember one of the things they touted about the Lynah renovation was they built out four full hockey locker rooms to support a tournament. But I could be sundowning.

Locker rooms was a big part of the last Reno.

The women’s lacrosse team uses the old men’s hockey locker room, I believe. Not sure who (if anyone) uses the old women’s hockey locker room. Are there more than 2 locker rooms in the expansion? That would make it awkward since the stairs go directly to the home bench.

Before the expansion, there were three locker rooms, a trainers' room, video room and office space downstairs. Trainers, video and all offices other than the rink manager moved upstairs with the team locker rooms, leaving square footage to be allocated elsewhere although I haven't personally toured the area since the reno occurred. Spent a lot of time down there with youth hockey players in the 90's, however....

i think there are spaces now that can be used as locker rooms, but really only 2 real locker rooms. the others are larger spaces with benches

There appear to be two visiting-team-quality locker rooms (and the referee room) at the open / Zamboni end of the rink. Friday and Saturday, that allowed the St. Lawrence women to have one locker room and St. Lawrence then Clarkson men to have another.

Clarkson men's hockey enjoying the balmier-than-Potsdam weather Saturday while waiting for the Cornell women to finish off St. Lawrence:

“Cornell is a hockey school, and in Ithaca, everything is hockey,” said junior forward Finley Frechette. “It’s pretty amazing having people recognize us when we’re out to dinner or getting coffee before the game and saying ‘good luck.’ It’s not really something female hockey players are necessarily used to. Just being apart of it gives me the chills — it’s amazing and everything I could have hoped for.”

Nothing yet from the Harvard athletics site, or The Harvard Crimson.

Princeton, surprisingly, all over Clarkson 4-0 late in the 2nd period. Looks like the ladies will be playing the Tigers tomorrow.

According to this PWR predictor, the only way Cornell does not finish at No. 1 in the Pairwise is if it loses to Princeton and Wisconsin wins the WCHA and UConn wins Hockey East and Robert Morris wins the CHA. But let's just beat Princeton and not worry about any other result.

EDIT: I didn't realize the CHA final was today and that Mercyhurst had won. So then Cornell will be No. 1 in the PWR regardless of what happens tomorrow.

We’ve had lots of those, and both PU goals came off bad turnovers.

Credit to Princeton, which is playing an excellent game. Lots of blocked shots by both teams.
