That's an abbreviation of the Latin "et alia," meaning "and others," sometimes used in place of the more colloquial "etc." in scholarly or legal writing.

I was thinking of going to Las Vegas but decided against it. That's a very slow time compared to the rest of the year so I'm not surprised flights and lodging are still in the lower end of the price range. It should be a good time

Attending. No ticket yet. Staying on for CES. Flying out Thursday or Friday makes for a dirt cheap ticket in one direction The airport is stuffed with people headed home Wednesday and Thursday.

I’ll be there in one of the GA sections. Note that there is an official alumni reception before the Friday game if you feel like spending $50 for hot dogs and popcorn (a relative bargain for the Strip!)

Huh?

15 Places For Cheap Food for Under $20 in Las Vegas

I thought the whole point of food on the Strip is bring in suckers customers to lose money gambling to experience the thrills and excitement of gaming.

If they still have nickle slots, one way to stay within budget is to buy a roll of nickles and pass a couple of hours playing the slots, while the casino offers you free drinks. It's a fun cocktail hour. The last time I did it I came out about $35 ahead.

My folks used to take the gambling bus down to Atlantic City. They'd use the food vouchers, hang out on the beach, then head home. No gambling.

I mean, the “cheap” places on that list are no bargain. The pizza place, for example, is about $6 a slice. I was mostly joking about the reception being a bargain, but the fact is that the cheap food days of the Strip are largely long gone.

As are the cheap seats for seeing "The Rat Pack". I remember my uncles talking about the entertainment being a relative bargain in the 60's.

Yup, great places in Chinatown, the Arts District and elsewhere than are totally worth the taxi/Uber fare from the Strip.

You forgot "nachos, and mac & cheese; along with a selection of beer, wine and soft drinks". You also forgot that you get to hear from Mike Scafer and spend time with fellow alums and Cornell Hockey enthusiasts. I happen to think that is worth more than saving a few bucks. But you did alert me to this event and for that, I thank you.

didnt realize until today that the vegas games on going to be on FLO TV..

also noticed that Cornell didnt bother on their schedule page to post the starting time in EST thus having to think abit about when the games are actually going to be on..

question isnt it est/edt or pst/pdt not PT as the proper abbreviation?

Ok. That makes sense. The games are listed in the flo app, but listed as Fortress Invitational. They don't list the individual teams playing in the tournaments. (Which is dumb for so many reasons)

I guess it's been almost 20 years since I drove through Vegas, but isn't there an In-n-Out Burger on the strip? Back when I was living in Salt Lake, it was the first In-n-Out on the drive to Southern California.

There are apparently 5 In-and-Outs in Vegas. There's one on the far side of the freeway from the arena.

Not that I understand the fascination. Their burgers are bland and their fries are usually too dry.

there is one in the LINQ experience area mid way down towards the High Roller.

I would go to the Brooklyn Bowl or the Barley Pizza or Gordan Ramseys fish place way before i ever go back to in-n-out burger again.

Always hit up the Ghirardelli ice cream shop there though..

Yeah, IIRC, In-N-Out Burger is roughly on par with Jack-in-the-Box, which I avoid like the plague.

In dss28's and my opinion the Fatburger on the Strip is excellent as far as quick-casual burger places go. For steak, we highly recommend The Steakhouse at Circus Circus; as long as you can stand to walk through the horrible casino floor to get there, it's totally worth it.

Not really - we had some good (but not spectacular) "revolving sushi" in Chinatown last time we were there in September, but we don't tend to go out of our way to find the others you mentioned. The one I really wish I could recommend is a sushi place where we had an absolutely amazing, creative Omakase for a friend's birthday several years ago, but we've never been able to remember the name of the place or figure out what it was (nor can the friend and his wife, who now live there, so it's especially frustrating for them), to our detriment and yours. Sorry.

“The Circus-Circus is what the whole hep world would be doing on Saturday night if the Nazis had won the war. This is the Sixth Reich. The ground floor is full of gambling tables, like all the other casinos … but the place is about four stories high, in the style of a circus tent, and all manner of strange County-Fair/Polish Carnival madness is going on up in this space. Right above the gambling tables the Forty Flying Carazito Brothers are doing a high-wire trapeze act, along with four muzzled Wolverines and the Six Nymphet Sisters from San Diego … so you’re down on the main floor playing blackjack, and the stakes are getting high when suddenly you chance to look up, and there, right smack above your head is a half-naked 14-year-old girl being chased through the air by a snarling wolverine, which is suddenly locked in a death battle with two silver-painted Polacks who come swinging down from opposite balconies and meet in mid-air on the wolverine’s neck … both Polacks seize the animal as they fall straight down towards the crap tables – but they bounce off the net; they separate and spring back up towards the roof in three different directions, and just as they’re about to fall again they are grabbed out of the air by three Korean Kittens and trapezed off to one of the balconies.” -- HST

Roy's Seafood used to be great. The Clintons ate there when they were in town (make of that what you will) and it was always inundated with the thousands of Hawaiian tourists who rent entire floors of Vegas hotels to gamble their savings away at the tables.

Pretty much - plus add about nine hundred screaming, spoiled children and their six hundred yelling parents.

But if you can get to the other end, The Steakhouse is a quiet, delicious oasis.

Haven't read that in years. Maybe I should get a copy for the flight.

Unlike a lot of Hunter (and the man himself), it's aged well. The Pulitzer murder dispatches are still the best, though. "She slept with a trumpet. I told her it was wrong."

Also contains this, for my money his best writing, and so significant now.

“Strange memories on this nervous night in Las Vegas. Five years later? Six? It seems like a lifetime, or at least a Main Era—the kind of peak that never comes again. San Francisco in the middle sixties was a very special time and place to be a part of. Maybe it meant something. Maybe not, in the long run . . . but no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world. Whatever it meant. . . .

History is hard to know, because of all the hired bullshit, but even without being sure of “history” it seems entirely reasonable to think that every now and then the energy of a whole generation comes to a head in a long fine flash, for reasons that nobody really understands at the time—and which never explain, in retrospect, what actually happened.

My central memory of that time seems to hang on one or five or maybe forty nights—or very early mornings—when I left the Fillmore half-crazy and, instead of going home, aimed the big 650 Lightning across the Bay Bridge at a hundred miles an hour wearing L. L. Bean shorts and a Butte sheepherder's jacket . . . booming through the Treasure Island tunnel at the lights of Oakland and Berkeley and Richmond, not quite sure which turn-off to take when I got to the other end (always stalling at the toll-gate, too twisted to find neutral while I fumbled for change) . . . but being absolutely certain that no matter which way I went I would come to a place where people were just as high and wild as I was: No doubt at all about that. . . .

There was madness in any direction, at any hour. If not across the Bay, then up the Golden Gate or down 101 to Los Altos or La Honda. . . . You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning. . . .

And that, I think, was the handle—that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn’t need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting—on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. . . .

So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark—that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.”

In dss28's and my opinion the Fatburger on the Strip is excellent as far as quick-casual burger places go. For steak, we highly recommend The Steakhouse at Circus Circus; as long as you can stand to walk through the horrible casino floor to get there, it's totally worth it.

Any recommendations for good ethnic restaurants, e.g. Thai, Ethiopian, Moroccan, Jamaican, Sichuan?

Not really - we had some good (but not spectacular) "revolving sushi" in Chinatown last time we were there in September, but we don't tend to go out of our way to find the others you mentioned. The one I really wish I could recommend is a sushi place where we had an absolutely amazing, creative Omakase for a friend's birthday several years ago, but we've never been able to remember the name of the place or figure out what it was (nor can the friend and his wife, who now live there, so it's especially frustrating for them), to our detriment and yours. Sorry.

Friends in Vegas who consider themselves sushi aficionados swear by a place on Sahara called Sushi Fever. [www.sushifevervegas.com] I have been there and have enjoyed their chicken katsu, but I'm not a sushi eater. Perhaps this is the place you are thinking of. It's been there at least fifteen years, and perhaps longer.

Whatever it meant. . . .

Agreed, great writing. Thanks.

But, OK Boomer, there's too much irony in using SOCIAL MEDIA to be nostalgic for HST's nostalgia for the Sixties. It's just wrong.

Piss on Eddie Shore, and piss on the 60's. It's just good writing. And HST, truth be told, was usually on the wrong side in the Creeping Meatballism War. Not for nothing did he run with the Angels, Bothsider politics, and die surrounded by gunz in his Aspen Freehold. He was a fucking idiot with a nice turn of phrase when not sober -- a cut rate de Maistre cosplaying Nietzsche.

The fact that we're now turning into the hellscape he so often invoked in his writing is in some part due to the fact that he and the talented people of his generation had the emotional and moral depth of a Dump speech.

When the creative and savvy people take three decades off to stare into their own assholes, we're left to the mercies of financiers and technocrats, and get... this. Hopefully the Millennials have learned the lesson. From what I've seen, they have, and it's not going to go particularly well for us, as we richly deserve.

This way to the ice floe.

I don't believe it is, but thanks for the suggestion. They don't even appear to offer an Omakase, though that's not proof they've never offered it.

For Thai - Lotus of Siam. Has been called the best Thai food in America, and it is certainly the best I have found. I think the original location is closed for renovations, but they have a second one. Worth the 10 minute ride from the strip.

Now Adam, how was supposed to know that. Mention it in a column and I might post it.

So, "It's all your fault, it's all your fault, ..."

And by the way, you forgot to mention that I gave you a link when I posted your PWR for this week.

It's not really all that exciting to mention in actuality. We're all going because it's an excuse to go to Vegas. With 60 teams to report about, this tournament really doesn't have that much more significance than any other - except this has a pretty good field, relatively speaking. So don't expect 15 stories on Cornell this weekend. Over/under on Cornell stories this weekend ... 0.5

Just decided that since they were coming most of the way to me in California then I would return the favor. Going with my dad who just turned 90!

Fri: GA (Cornell sections not available) and reception in Toshiba Plaza
Sat: Section 6

Staying at the Delano Mandalay Bay. (Might have done the MGM had I known about the Cornell deal that was noted in my reception confirmation)

An alumni band had begun organizing when it was discovered that the tournament just assumed none of the schools would send their band and hired 4 local high schools to fill in. Not wanting to just elbow those high-schoolers out, an alumni band leader got in touch (through CU Athletics) with the VGK's marketing manager, and it turns out the Desert Pines HS band said they would be thrilled to have us join them.

So mostly a HS band with some CU band alumni joining for support/guidance. Some of us *cough* are relieved we don't have to be relied on to play or schlep a trombone across the country. I'm not sure if the alumni would get a chance to play a bit on their own, but that was also being discussed.

Maybe a bad assumption, but that's pretty neat compared to just saying no bands.

it would be even cooler (though above and beyond tbh) if they got in touch with the school bands to get "assignments" to learn for the game. Would be hilarious to get a few HS kids to learn a quick Swanee only to have the band director blanch when he heard what it was for.

The band playing for OSU played Gary Glitter. The band supporting us was great. They actually all wore red, had red and white flags to twirl, and played Davy after the goals and the Alma Mater during the intermission. Now we need to teach them "O Canada."

Hooker count? - Cheerleaders in the rink excepted.

We must have walked through different places. I smelled weed quite a few times. But, yeah, still more strollers...and hookers.

I always remember Steve Martin's bit about his first time seeing a show in Vegas: "God, look at the tits! There must be 57 tits up there!" Of course, in the case of the cheerhookers, I doubt any of them were real.

But the "Buck in my cup" guy is Vegas in a nutshell: Loud, annoying, rude, tasteless. All about the money.

Glad we're not coming back next year.

I’m just glad Atlantic City isn’t in our lives anymore. That was like a fever nightmare compared to Las Vegas.

I’m not going to say that “there’s something for everyone” in LV. But the city has made steps towards stressing a wide range of entertainment, food, and shopping instead of just gambling, sex, and booze. And apparently pot, but I’ve smelled that in just about every city (or rock concert) in America I’ve walked around lately, big and small. It’s everywhere, folks. Those pearls can’t be clutched anymore.

That’s not to say I even like LV that much. Everything you can see is pretty much designed to part you with your money. Resort fees are misleading and possibly illegal. It’s the perfect place to study America’s wealth disparity in a fishbowl. It attracts year-round the stereotype of the rude, loudmouth American and placates them with the excesses they crave. It’s a city built in a place no one should be able to live, and proudly flaunts the wastefulness of humanity in order to even exist. It sells “The American Dream” more than anywhere else, and people keep buying it. All you need is a few bucks and a system, and you too can shit in a gold toilet. Thank god we were there in January and not hoofing to the ice arena in 110 degree heat.

But I had a good time, because I know my comfort areas, and can get away from the overstimulating noise. It also carries some nostalgia for me. On top of that, it was a well run tournament overall. Ushers were friendly and left us to sit where we pleased. They provided bands, which shows they kind of “get” what the college game is about. You really don’t need a damn car to get there. It wasn’t perfect. Endless Jock Jams, an unexplained early championship game that left even the arena staff confused, and yeah, shootouts are lame. But it was a good show. The FF is coming.

Can we all just agree the tournament would be greatly improved by eliminating the "professional" cheerleaders?

Personally, I'm not a big fan of cheerleaders in any sport, particularly hockey, but I have little problem with student cheerleading for their own schools. Especially, schools where hockey cheerleaders skate on the ice. Nor, given ongoing gender disparities, do I have a problem with talented dancers and athletes finding employment as professional cheerleaders.

But as far as I could tell, these cheerleaders just stood on the stairs and wiggled. With FloSports in particular, the cheerleaders really detracted from the enjoyment of watching the game. Frequently, when there was a lull in the action, the camera would focus on the cheerleaders. Why? About the only saving grace was when they were "dancing" with young children. Meanwhile, the teams were setting up for a faceoff, but because the cameras were on the cheerleaders, viewers couldn't see who was on the ice or what the teams' strategies were. And the announcers said nothing about it.

The only thing worse was when FloSports showed Jumbotron cartoons instead. I wanted to throw a brick at the TV. Fortunately, I was out of bricks.

As for the cheerleader/hooker controversy, if you saw one of the cheerleaders dressed in her cheerleader costume on the strip, what would you guess is her occupation?dribble

Sounds like the problem was the broadcast, not the cheerleaders. Being there in person, I didn't feel they detracted from the experience - certainly no more than the jock jams or the $17 beers.

Cheerleader or promotional model.

This.

I enjoyed the tournament, it was a positive, and I would do it again. Now, maybe part of that is I live in CA and so I'm up for any game(s) that close to me. Yes Las Vegas is crass and over-the-top, but if done sparingly the ridiculousness of it is actually a positive in a campy way. My wife and I didn't do any gambling because we have no interest in it, but it's still fun to people watch others going about it. Yes it's designed to separate you from your money, but if you're a halfway reasonable adult you know how to avoid that; heck we each made $20 reviewing a TV show!

Positives:
- As mentioned above, close to where I live and fun to walk around for a couple days.
- Overall running of the tournament. Decent arena, easy to get in and out of, good restaurants nearby.
- The HS bands.

Negatives:
- Could have done without the long breaks in play. Were those for commercials? It hurt the flow a little and gave us little opportunity for remote-control goalie.
- As others have mentioned, the OT format. But in the end, it was a tie and they needed an excuse to give out a trophy.
- Also as others mentioned, making the championship game the early one.

Overall the first positive outweighs all of the negatives by a mile.

Now, if they did it 10 straight years it might start to get old. But for now I'd do it again.

All this, except that for dss28 and myself, we love Vegas - we're there once or twice a year to play poker and to visit good friends anyway, so this was a great excuse to add a trip. We have a few favorite places on the Strip, but we also know some great ones away from it (and several of them are inside that arbitrary 10-mile radius Trotsky suggested), and we know how to manage both our time and our money where poker is concerned. I think a Vegas Frozen Four is probably a fait accompli at this point, and that'll be even better - genuinely large chunks of time into which to slot poker tournaments.

They'd better not change the schedule on the fly a second time - I think people sort of understood this time, but a non-zero number of Cornell fans legitimately missed the championship game and they simply cannot afford to lose that sort of goodwill again, potential participant schools talk to each other. At least that won't be an issue for the Frozen Four.

Honest question because I don't remember: did they ever explicitly say the second game on Saturday was the championship game, or did we all just assume because that's how it's always done?

Yes, the schedule was explicit in quite a few places as having the consolation early and championship late. The official tournament page even still strongly implies it.

i was wondering when they mentioned it on the TV friday that it was the 530 game what was up. still I wasnt sure what that even meant with the 3 hr time difference, i could have been 2:30 5:30 and not 5:30 8:30 for all i knew.

It was disconcerting to see fewer Cornell fans at the championship game than the first round. The only explanation was that people missed the memo on the start time. Which is horrible.

I agree with everything, pro and con, said above at Vegas. This is relevant because there will be a FF there in the coming years. It's all but a done deal. It's completely crass and ridiculous, and a waste of resources. But in 3-day doses, I just take it for what it is and have a hoot with it. I don't gamble or drink much, so I don't get carried away. Just stick to what I find fun, and enjoy the energy of the surroundings. I can't imagine living there - but it's becoming a place more people are moving to, so ... that is changing the dynamic too.
