I'm no longer going, so could the rest of you bring newspapers for yourself and others? And if you want to have some other fun, a few Snickers?:-D

I know that Ned & Anne Dykes are going, so there should be some good pictures.

Nice headline (if long) on the earlier Sun article:

... story doesn't make clear if Andreev can't get a visa for travel through Canada, or if there wasn't enough time once they realized it was necessary for bus travel

The latest from MSU.

MSU coach Danton Cole said Cornell combines a fast-paced offense with stingy defense.

"They're really aggressive, they skate well and have guys that can make plays but (Coach Mike Schafer) has them playing well defensively,'' he said. "It's an odd combination of really in-your-face offense and not much room defensively. That's a helluva combination.

Interesting to have a relatively neutral opponent talk about the speed of our offense.

Just a couple of quick heads-ups for anyone purchasing the streaming to watch the games this weekend:

--If you want to save a few bucks and aren't going to watch any games other than the Cornell games you can select a one-school only monthly pass, which costs $9.95. I was expecting to have to pay more than $5 per game to watch these two games.

--Just before completing the purchase there is an "automatically renew" check-box that is checked by default. I almost missed it.

Not true HD, but god camera work. Occasional crowd shots pointed to this being a scoreboard camera but if so it was worth the $5.

I side loaded the BTN+ app to my Fire Stick and it worked well considering I received a warning that it might not work during the installation.

How is BTN?

I thought it was generally pretty good. Some issues at first with sound. Also they cut away at stoppages a little quicker than I would have liked at times. Certainly worth $5 a game.

On a related note, the MSU announcers could not have been saying nicer things about the Cornell team. They clearly had a great deal of respect for Cornell. If only they could have stopped switching between calling Galajda "Michael" and "Matthew." (I thought they had it figured out after switching to Matt after a couple of Mike's, but they tricked me and went back to Mike later. :) )

decent game other than the penalties. Some very dominant shifts the 2nd half of every period. Some sloppy passing at times. Got better as the game went on as they really didnt have much pressure the other 2 games to work on that.

I would have been happy with a split after last yr. Now can we back it up. 5x5 we were much the better team.

not much free ice most of the game but we cycled very well.

We had a lot of trouble 5 on 5 early in the game, and only a lot of MSU penalties seemed to keep us even in the 1st period. However, we seemed to get our legs going in the 2nd and 3rd and played more confidently. Malone was particularly impressive in some stickhandling battles for the puck along the boards, where he managed to come away with the puck.

they cut way down on the sloppy passing game 2. good to see. generate a ton of solid chances. It will be interesting if we can get more plays thru the center with speed as MSU clogged that down pretty well..

PK is usually a strength need to get that cleaned up soon.

PP good puck control and some decent chances, still need to move it a bit faster

That Malinski goal was really something else. I think he previously saw some kind of behavior or tendency from the goaltender because he knew where he was going the whole time. It's not even that hard of a shot but it's placed perfectly in a spot where the goaltender's positioning wasn't enough to eliminate the angle

Great start to the season. We came out more confidently from the beginning tonight, and we've got the ability to finish the play. Motley's goal was a similar snipe to Andreev's from yesterday. Malinski and Malone continue to stand out among the large freshmen class. I think it is safe to say that this is the deepest roster we've ever had. Haiskanen should be back in a few weeks, but I didn't hear anything re Donaldson's status. Despite the PP success, we did not have the same sustained zone time that MSU had when they were on on PP. I suspect this weeks' practices will be emphasizing the PP and PK.

The last few times down the ice they kept setting Malinsky up to bomb it and he got in deeper that time and picked the far post. It was really, really nice to see. The two deflections in the second after Motley's goal were also really nice to see - one of my frustrations is that I feel (whether it's true or not!) that we do a bad job of getting a body in front to redirect shots from the outside.

I also thought Steinburg's first game was very solid.

The only real downer was Green's shift before MSU's second goal. First, he let the puck just fall off his stick near the blue line, failing to clear and basically handing the puck to Sparty, then as MSU was buzzing he committed a penalty. It's one shift and was uncharacteristic and probably ultimately means nothing but yeesh.

Malinsky's shot beat the goalie on the near post and then ricocheted around to the other side of the net.

My favorite so far, to be honest: two forwards (one Regush) neither blocking our own shot nor skating past the puck on the rush, and Regush planting himself in the right place to wait for a possible rebound.

what the heck is this call ?

18:04
Cornell
PenaltyPenalty on Locke, Brenden COR 2 minutes for PROTOCOL VIOLATION, (power play opp).

Most likely using his hand to play the puck on a faceoff:

Section 10, Rule 81.3

"Both players facing-off are prohibited from batting the puck with their
hand in an attempt to win the faceoff. Any attempt by either center to win
the faceoff by batting the puck with their hand is prohibited.
PENALTY—Minor."
That's exactly what it was. In the rink it was announced as "playing the puck with the hand on a faceoff."

As far as I'm concerned, it's magic. But then again, I can't even skate, so the whole sport is magic.

Agreed, but as far as I’m concerned, what Marty does is also magic

No way. Just mouse work.

Skating with a stick controlling a puck is nigh impossible at this level.

Just watched the highlights (thanks, Marty) and noticed something I had not noticed while watching the game.

After the Cornell icing with about 30 seconds remaining, Saliba (MSU Captain) can be seen signalling for a timeout. A little later the MSU coach has a mini-tantrum on the bench, while first looking at Saliba, and then turning back and glaring at him. The announcers say something about the coach not wanting the timeout, and then some stuff about Cornell taking one or just stalling, etc., but play then starts up again and no timeout was taken.

My question for those that know (like Arthur) is can a coach "untake" a timeout that one of his captains asked for?

Thanks!

Thanks for the clips, Marty.

Two things I see in those: taking shots from outside and going for the tip-ins and sending people to the net. With our big bodies and the speed we now have, that's going to work well.

The rule book is silent on the procedure for calling a timeout, except that the coach must request a timeout for the purpose of requesting a video review of a call with respect to a challenge. Everywhere else it refers to a timeout (or time out or time-out) as belonging to the team.

Yes, thanks for the links. I like how the cornellbigred.com write up includes short descriptions of how each goal was scored.

Yes, thanks for the links. I like how the cornellbigred.com write up includes short descriptions of how each goal was scored.

That's because we have one of the best college hockey reporters on staff, Brandon Thomas. If you want to see how impressive he is/was, find one of his old IJ articles.

Yes, I know it's odd to ask you to find an article after I find all the above articles, but so be it. No time now.

When he left the IJ, not knowing he was going to CU, I told him I was sorry to see him go. But now seeing how little effort the IJ puts into CU sports, I understand why.

It's true that Brandon is one of the best hockey reporters out there.

It's sad he has to do it within the confines of a publicity office, and not for a newspaper. But this is the way of the world right now, not just at the Ithaca Journal. (to wit, Neil Koepke, who was probably the longest-tenured college hockey beat writer in the West, at the Lansing State Journal - now works for MSUSpartans.com)

It's good that Cornell (and MSU in the case of Koepke) gives those guys some chance to spread their wings a bit - but it can only go so far, obviously, given that the schools are going to protect their interests. But still, Cornell allows Brandon to do more than most SIDs do, in terms of using good quotes in his recaps and elaborating on things.

Michigan State was outshot 48-24. You don't see too many 48-save shutouts.

The article about Ralph Krueger is interesting, with obvious Cornell relevance. But I'm not sure what it has to do with MSU's 48-save shutout. innocent

Unless the link somehow magically transformed, the article is about Scrivens’ 59 save shutout while playing for Edomonton

Oh, I didn’t notice that part. The next article on the page was about Krueger’s dad.
