PWR 2 / 7 / 13 / 19 is a good field.

Since this post the Vegas field has moved to PWR 2 / 6 / 14 / 19.

Our Friday game is 2 vs 6 and will be the highest PWR opponent we play until the NC$$ unless Clarkson goes on a tear.

Well, this will be an interesting test case. Assuming that today’s ASU/Brown game doesn’t somehow cost us more than .0033 in RPI, we’ll be #1 in PWR when this week’s ballots are submitted. We sure didn’t pick up any style points, though (dropped to 3rd in KRACH) so I think we’ll learn something about how many voters (if any) just vote straight PWR.

With four more first-place votes.
Which means somebody shivved us to third or lower.

Assuming 20 points for first place, we are 44 points short of perfect distributed among 29 ballots.

x + 2y = 44
x + y = 29

(29 - y) + 2y = 44
y = 15
x = 14

21 first place votes
14 second place votes
15 third place votes

Is one way to do it. Of course, somebody who hates us, the Ivies, the ECAC and/or the East might have sent us even lower.

My favorite:

21 first place
28 second place
1 seventeenth

More likely:
              1 2 3 4
Cornell 21-14-15- 0
N. Dakota 17-22-11- 0
Mankato 12-14-14-10

If it serves no meaningful purpose to you, you should at least realize that many of us enjoy seeing the team ranked first. I'm not sure why you want to bring rain on the parade. You are welcome to pick up a trumpet or a sousaphone and join our pep band.

I haven't seen much on here, but look at the women's record. Our teams are now a combined 26-2-4 with almost identical 1-loss records. Pretty amazing year so far for Cornell hockey. Let's hope we get to watch a lot of very late season hockey.

About time people start mentioning, and maybe even discussing, women’s hockey on here.

Human polls serve no meaningful purpose, but FWIW I think it's crazy to rank Cornell above NoDak.

If it serves no meaningful purpose to you, you should at least realize that many of us enjoy seeing the team ranked first. I'm not sure why you want to bring rain on the parade. You are welcome to pick up a trumpet or a sousaphone and join our pep band.
Just because I don't believe Cornell is the best team in the country doesn't mean I don't enjoy seeing them ranked as such.

I simply think it's nuts to think Cornell would beat NoDak more than 50 games out of 100.

Dunno. Everything I've said about the team this year has been highly positive, so maybe you should be surprised.

I know we have a women's thread. I just noticed there hasn't been anything on there in quite some time and the team is doing amazing. I also thought the similarity of the 12-1-2 and 14-1-2 records is cool.

NoDak has played the fourth-hardest schedule, Cornell the 22nd-hardest. Despite this, their goal differentials are approximately equal: NoDak has scored 70% of the goals in its games, Cornell has scored 71%. NoDak has the highest "CF Close" (shot attempts when game is within a goal) in the NCAAs, at 62%, despite the tougher competition. Cornell's is 11th, at 56%. NoDak also has the highest Overall CF, and is #1 in Fenwick (which counts unblocked shots only) in both Close and Overall. Moreover, NoDak has some of the most talented players in the country. Schafer has done a remarkable job with the players he has, but NoDak is the better team.

OK, let me not be funny.

If you want to mention or discuss women's hockey, go ahead! No one is stopping you. Start a thread; post a comment here or elsewhere. Step up your game.

Or you could just randomly moan about others discussing what they want to discuss…

Oh, no problem whatsoever! This thread seems a perfectly appropriate place to discuss the women's polls as well.

Me looking over the latest polls and PWR: “Pretty much in lock step but interesting how Clarkson has been able to poll a few spots higher than its PWR for a while now I wonder- holy smokes, Bowling Green!”

That’s a big difference not usually seen if my recollection can be trusted.

I think it is fin to be somehow under the radar and the national #1. I do find it amusing that USCHO continues to ignore the existence of that fact.

Yeah. I don't want to get too excited, but that's what has always been missing.

There are pretty significant KRACH "discontinuities" (there's probably a better word) between #2/#3, #5/#6, and (kind of) #32/#33, defined in a somewhat fuzzy manner by the likelihood that a higher rated team will beat the team ranked immediately below it. Another way of looking at it is that, according to KRACH, Denver has a less than 1 in 3 chance of beating Mankato, Ohio State has a less than 1 in 4 chance, and Maine has a less than 1 in 10 chance.

It seems that Mankato and North Dakota are in a little bit of a "league of their own" situation, perhaps slightly due to having significant results against each other, I would think. But they're definitely running a bit above the rest, although still in striking distance for us. Then there's another little group of Denver, BC, and us, and then a somewhat unmediated mass down to BU.

For whatever reason, I usually view a greater than 1 in 3 likelihood according to KRACH of one team beating another as pretty significant. So another way one might look at all of this is to consider which teams are "in the hunt" for the top 4. Right now, that's only BC, Ohio State, and Penn State. Clarkson is perilously close to being in that group.

To my mind, relatively few teams seem to be in striking distance of a national championship this season. I'm glad we're in that group so far.

This more than anything tells you that this team has a real fking chance to do it.

Without whipping out actual win percentages, it seems like this year, all of college hockey is very top-heavy. The top three teams have a combined six losses between them. BC has five losses. Denver has four. Clarkson has five. I feel like at this point, BC's 15-5-0, Denver's 15-4-5, and Clarkson's 16-5-2 would all be contending for the best records in the country (maybe not Denver, that's a lot of ties). Instead, they're all well behind the top three.

The last two years, only two teams have finished with single-digit losses. This year, several teams are on track to either get there or come close. Granted, that's an odd cutoff, because a slew of teams have finished with exactly ten losses, but the point still stands.

playoffstatus.com gives the following odds right now:

.99 Bid (.28 #1 overall; .85 #1 regional seed)
.71 QF
.45 F4
.26 Finalist
.15 National Champion

I am in no way quoting this just to get under one guy's skin. That would be immature.

The average for the last 20 years is 3.4 teams with fewer than 10 losses.

By year:
2000 7 Niagara, SLU, Colgate, UNH, Quinnipiac, Wisconsin, North Dakota
2001 4 Michigan State, BC, North Dakota, St. Cloud
2002 4 Michigan State, Cornell, UNH, Denver, Minnesota
2003 4 Cornell, UNH, Colorado College, Minnesota
2004 3 BC, Maine, North Dakota
2005 5 Michigan, Cornell, BC, Colorado College, Denver
2006 3 Miami, Cornell, Minnesota
2007 2 Notre Dame, Clarkson
2008 2 Michigan, Miami

2016 8 Michigan, Quinnipiac, Yale, BC, Providence, North Dakota, St. Cloud, Michigan Tech
2017 4 Harvard, Cornell, Denver, Duluth
2018 2 Cornell, St. Cloud
2019 2 AIC, St. Cloud

Right now 4 teams have 4 losses or fewer: Cornell (1), North Dakota (2), Denver (4), Mankato (3). 3 have exactly 5: Clarkson, Dartmouth, BC.

I wonder if CHA folding made it less likely for a 1-seed to advance. Formerly, two 1-seeds played weaker conferences. Now only one does, and that conference has gotten a bit more competitive, too.

Just a thought.

Add to that that lower seeds can sometimes be the home team, giving them help, and that a single game in a sport like hockey makes upset much more likely.

Top 16 vs. Top 16 (KRACH)

6-1-1 Minnesota State
1-1-2 North Dakota
5-0-2 Cornell
4-3-3 Denver
2-4-0 Boston College
3-2-0 Ohio State
2-2-0 Penn State
0-2-0 Clarkson
1-3-0 Massachusetts
1-2-1 Minn-Duluth
2-1-1 Providence
2-3-1 Arizona State
3-7-0 Michigan State
2-3-1 Northern Michigan
4-3-0 Mass-Lowell
2-3-0 Northeastern

FWIW, NMU came into Lynah Friday night with a five-game unbeaten streak stretching back to Dec. 14, when NMU beat then-#1 Minny State. The first weekend in 2020 NMU swept then-#11 Bowling Green @ Bowling Green. The next weekend it swept Anchorage at home. Not too shabby.

And Cornell's record of 1-0-1 compares rather well with Minny State's 1-1-0 against this common opponent.

Cornell is outright #1 in USCHO poll this week.

Only by 2 poll points, despite having 7 more first place votes than UND. Only 11 points ahead of #3 Mankato. North Dakota got 3 fewer first-place votes than Mankato, yet leads them by 9 points. NCHC biasing?

I’m treating it as a three-way tie and nothing will change until one of us loses.

This is the first time we have successfully defended the poll pole position since I've been tracking polls, and I assume since 72 or perhaps 73.

This is the first string of 4 top-20 opponents (at the time of playing) since the last four games of 2012. We haven't done 5+ in the 20 years I've tracked it; possibly ever. Q is 17 so we may do it next week.

Don't 20 Dartmouth (1/24) and 16 Harvard (1/25) count?

doh I forgot about RPI & Union and thought we had played OSU & Providence immediately prior to tNMU. Sorry!

BTW, since we're using first initials to designate teams, it's really too bad that Union doesn't come after Dartmouth and before Harvard on the schedule.

We could. In an ECAC solitaire card game I made (because of course) I use:

BKG CDH PQR SUY with K as Clarkson and G as Colgate. In prior incarnations it had V and A.

According to an email blast sent to season ticket holders today it's actually the first time ever:

"For a second straight week, Cornell retains the #1 spot in both the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls, having lost just once in its first 17 games despite playing the nation's fewest home games to date (six). It's the first time the Big Red has claimed the top spot in both national polls for consecutive weeks since the polls started during the 1990s."

Well, one would presume had they polls back then the 1969-1970 team would have had #1 for more than a week.

Then again, maybe it was like lacrosse, and it would have taken actually winning the NC to convince the nonbelievers. If given the choice, I'd take the latter option this year in a heartbeat.

USCHO started in the 90s. USA Hockey started earlier. In any case, there were polls all the way back to at least the 70s and probably before. Don Birkmayer's newsletter used to publish a poll from a radio station in Michigan, and IINM there were also polls out of Minnesota and Boston. I believe they were all sponsored by local media and probably heavily locally biased. Taking their average might produce a true picture of national ranking during those years.

NoDak is leading late so it looks like it’ll have the top PWR spot and Cornell will be in 2nd. Fun tidbit: At the moment Cornell has the highest quality win bonus (QWB) of *any* team. I think that backs ups the view that Cornell hasn’t built its record by playing cupcakes (not that any of us thought that).

Both USCHO & CHN have those NoDak characters #1 and us #2 in the pairwise after last night. It's the adjusted RPI -- .6151 (ND) and .6087 (CU) -- that's responsible. It didn't help that some of our better wins were against teams that lost (MSU, OSU x 2) or tied (DU, BU, CLK, NMU) over the weekend.

Wikipedia says, "Dartmouth College is a private Ivy League research university ...," (emphasis added)

Wikipedia also says, "In the United States, "college" may refer to a constituent part of a university or to a degree-awarding tertiary educational institution, but generally "college" and "university" are used interchangeably."

Finally,
The Atlantic
says,
"Technically, colleges are institutions that focus on undergraduate education and tend to be small (no more than a few thousand students); universities are larger and grant graduate degrees.

Now since

Dartmouth has 6,571 students, while Bryant University has only 3,751, accordingly the Law of (Not So) Large Institutions applies:

https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2019/11/is-a-college-different-from-a-university/602215/
Plenty of schools with college in their name, for example, have graduate programs—such as Dartmouth and William & Mary. And some universities are relatively small—such as Clark and, well, Lasell [or Bryant].

Really appreciate you doing these, Jim. Thanks.

Summary:
 1. Cornell 1-0-1
 2. North Dakota 1-1
 3. Mankato 1-1
 4. BC 0-2
 5. Denver 2-0
 7. UMass 0-1-1
 8. Clarkson 1-1
 9. Penn State 1-1
10. Providence 0-0

The top 10 going just 7-7-2 with no games against each other. Our 3-point weekend against two teams in the top-20 looks pretty good.

After Q we play 8 unranked teams (here listed with PWR):
53 Prn
39 Cgt
39 Cgt
55 Uni
43 RPI
38 Yal
56 Brn
59 SLU
before finishing vs Clarkson.

Time to get fat.

But this is giving me a boost.
Given the news in the real world the past few years. Cornell hockey is what's kept me out of the booby hatch.
